chapter 18
18 – Fox Magical Girl, Lucia (1)
A week later, Dalton called all of our mercenaries together.
“Baron Tylen is also f*cking boring, damn it. He said that after reviewing the reward for a mercenary force of less than 150 people for a week, he fell for himself.”
“Ah, but Captain Dalton said that. He said he almost cried because he was so damn grateful that he didn’t act like an idiot to get rid of the reward.”
“I don’t know why the nobles always act like f*ckers and fall for themselves.”
It seems like everyone is cursing the baron just by hearing what they say, but today, exactly as of now, there won’t be a single person in the Whitebeard mercenary who hates Baron Tyllen.
I can say this because today is the day when the baron is giving out bonuses to commemorate the victory that all mercenaries have been waiting for.
As if to prove my opinion correct, Captain Dalton also climbed onto the makeshift podium with the corner of his mouth hanging over his ears.
Seeing that the corners of his mouth touched his ears, he must have received a lot of bonuses for himself as a mercenary leader.
‘f*ck, I think I’ll get punished a lot too. My stomach really hurts thinking about the captain.’
“Attention everyone! If you are a bastard who can’t hear well, f*ck it, dig your ear hole and listen carefully. It’s a reward day from the baron and the mercenaries who have been waiting for you guys to f*ck up.”
All the mercenaries, including me, responded with great cheers to those words.
And Dalton started announcing the amount of rewards to be given to those who were particularly active among the 150 people in random order, starting with newcomers excluding me who had just entered.
Honestly, I thought it would be nice to put up a notice or something neatly, and tell everyone in one room how much reward and how far they will advance.
In our mercenaries, Captain Dalton likes to be condescending, so he recites every single thing like that.
“William, senior mercenary of the Charles Tenth Corps, 5 gold coins for killing 3 enemy soldiers! Senior mercenary Karin of the Fjord Tenth Corps, 12 gold coins in recognition for her contribution to victory by sniping and killing 6 enemy soldiers with arrows and extracting important information from the enemy!”
But what’s really strange about this is that even after standing there for a long time and listening to how many other colleagues are rewarded, the feeling of boredom has disappeared before I knew it.
Should I say that it’s a situation where I’m stimulated with feelings of envy and a desire to improve more than that…
“Fior, Captain of the Ten, 20 gold coins for your contribution to reducing the momentum of the Tristan mercenaries.”
…… No, honestly, it’s nothing, but hearing the story of that man who took 20 gold coins with a spoonful of my achievements.
Next time, I think that I should get more rewards than that bastard no matter what, and my desire to compete is burning.
I bet my hands on the fact that the other guys are listening to this and thinking the same thing, damn it.
In that way, the achievements and rewards of the 10th commander, those called officers above him, and the platoon commander were all mentioned, and Dalton took a deep breath and continued reading in a loud voice.
“Lastly, new recruit Martin Mayer from the Fjord Tentacles. He killed 13 enemy soldiers and platoon leader Schmitz, and even found out Baron Cassino’s cowardly plan and was credited with saving the mercenaries from the brink of defeat, and was awarded 10 gold coins. In addition, his ability is recognized and he is promoted to the rank of captain.”
To be honest, the bounty is lower than that of Fjord.
If you were promoted from a new soldier with a meat shield to a captain of the 10th rank, it would be the same as being promoted from a private to a sergeant at high speed in Korea.
By the way, thinking about it again, I understand Karin, but it’s unfair that the son of a b*tch with only the spoon on Fior took more money than I did.
‘Damn it, even though that day-eating Fjord is a miser, he is not scum who has broken his conscience. I’ll get a drink or something and have a blast.’
On the other hand, as soon as the news of my promotion to Captain of the Ten Commandments was announced, there was a buzz among the mercenaries around me.
“Martin, that f*cking bastard, I honestly admit that he’s a bastard, and I know he’s been flying alone in this battle for a long time. Isn’t it too much to be called a senior mercenary and not the captain of the 10th?”
“Asshole asshole, if you’re so f*cking envious that it makes your stomach churn, just say it’s like that, asshole”
“Well, I was offered a job as a knight by an old man who says Sir Holmes or something, but that bastard refused. I missed that good opportunity and if I was the captain of the 10th, I would have done a f*cking shovel. In fact, when I heard that, I f*cking thought that this might be the case.”
As we were enduring such burdensome words and stares, Captain Dalton looked down at us below the podium and said.
“Senior Mercenary Karin, Captain Martin, Platoon Leader Jason, and Platoon Leader Karl were specially awarded by the baron, so please follow me.”
A certificate of commendation, in simple terms, is a document in which a nobleman guarantees a mercenary who has played a major role that he can be trusted and used because he is a very capable bastard.
I don’t know anything else, but it’s difficult to forge a certificate of commendation, and it’s something that only very competent mercenaries can receive.
Is that Dalton doing that because he wants to give it away to other guys?
Still, it feels really good to be receiving something special to prove my abilities secretly.
It’s honestly a bit disappointing that I didn’t receive much of the bounty, but there will be a better opportunity next time.
**
When we entered the tent, Dalton was smiling suspiciously bright.
The Treasurer and the Chief Administrative Officer soon followed, carrying boxes that appeared to contain commendations.
Dalton looked back at us and smiled.
“Bastards, you are the number one contributor to this victory. That’s why the baron gave me a special reward and a certificate of commendation, so I’m so f*cking grateful. And by tradition, no matter how much you get paid, don’t brag about how much you got. And if you get bitten wrong, you know you’re going to blow it all up with all the money you put between the crotches of pr*stitutes and the money you f*ck with your co-workers, right?”
If you get paid too much compared to other mercenaries, like Dalton said, not only will you be ripped off by mercenaries living in the same group, but you will even incur jealousy.
It seems that those who receive such a really large bounty are doing this to keep the amount unknown to others.
“Senior mercenary Karin. Here is the citation and reward money.”
With that said, the treasurer opened the box to reveal a tiny glimpse of the inside, closed it, and handed it to Karin.
Others also received boxes with bags that looked pretty chunky, and I was the last one to pick it up.
“Martin, this is your bounty and citation. Now that you’ve received this, you won’t hear any f*cking noises wherever you go.”
Looking at the bag inside the box, it’s a lot looser than I thought.
Anyway, damn it, the baron must have deliberately skipped the bounty somehow because he wasn’t knighted.
I’ve heard that bastards called f*cking nobles are sly, but isn’t this a bit f*cking overkill?
“Thank you, chief.”
Dalton even handed me the citation and shook his hand.
“Everyone is gone except Martin. And as everyone knows, if you ask how much money you got, you just say you got it in moderation and take care of it. You know that, because I’m going to break your head after a fight while bragging about money.”
Then when only me and Dalton were left here, he looked at my face and smiled meaningfully.
“Martin, f*ck you. I don’t need anything else, just open the money bag in your citation, you f*cker.”
As the captain of the mercenaries, there’s no way he wouldn’t know how much my bounty was, and knowing that he wasn’t the kind of person who would tamper with my bounty, I opened the money bag without hesitation.
As expected, yellow gold should be coming out of the leather pouch, but silver was coming out of it.
However, unlike silver, the gloss is much more brilliant, so it seems that this is a platinum coin that is worth five times more than a gold coin…
I don’t know about gold coins, but I was surprised at the moment because platinum coins were something I rarely touched even when I was a knight.
“You bastard, the bastard who vehemently refused to be appointed a knight. Are you fussing over just a few platinum coins? I’m going to leave the f*cking six pack.”
“But isn’t that a f*cking platinum coin? Since I heard 15, isn’t it worth 75 gold coins?”
“Look, Captain Martin, if it wasn’t for you, honestly, I and Baron Tylen would have had to f*cking kick and bite their tongues, damn. So don’t just give me this much.”
Hearing those words, I suddenly thought that a halo was shining from the back of Baron Tyllen, whom I had never met before, and reached here.
After undergoing enormous financial treatment, it seems that I have finally turned my back.
“But when you receive a reward, can’t you see the approximate size of your pocket? So if I give you money in gold coins, I’m afraid other guys will get upset and search for it. To make it look like I was paid less on purpose, this body personally changed it to ‘platinum.'”
“Thank you for your warm consideration, Captain. sh*t, I will only look at the captain’s arms and follow him until I die.”
“Stop rubbing your dick. Before plucking it from the body of the expansion head.”
As if Dalton’s words were sincere, he could see a blue aura coming up from his body.
“Because Baron Tylen gave up the chance to become a knight under his bastard who steals other people’s men like that bastard, he chose me. This is a gift I give to you, a baby. “
He handed me one of his knives, in a sheath that looked quite expensive.
“It’s a cheap one I don’t use anymore, but I’m giving it to you because it seems to suit you. Pull it out.”
When I pulled out the sword, the sword body (body of the sword) with a small amount of mithril was revealed.
Swords with mithril vary in price depending on the mithril content, but no matter how cheap they are, they are at least 4 to 5 times more expensive than high-end steel swords…
Dalton looked at me and said in a condescending voice.
“It’s a sword I stole from an enemy knight while I was a mercenary. It’s too much of a sword for an old cocksucking rookie, but it’s a perfect fit for Dec. Captain Martin Mayer.”
“Captain, I will follow you wherever you go, even through the pit of fire, until my body is broken.”
“Oh, f*ck. If you do that, the chicken will grow. Please shut up. If you don’t shut up, I’ll make you look like f*cking Adolf.”
I said that, but Dalton kept twitching the corners of his mouth as if I was in a good mood because I was grateful.
“By the way, you are the captain of the Ten Commandments. To be honest, you, the best of the 10 leaders, there is no one to follow. So until you go to your next destination, Salzheim, you f*cking have to be the captain of the 10th squad with no subordinates. This is our mercenary tradition, so just endure with evil! f*ck rice, the captain of the 10th, Martin.”
This is something I can’t help because I’m short on time.
In terms of the storyline, Salzheim is a place where it is predicted that an all-out war between Count Salzheim and Count Philorand will soon take place, and there must be a lot of ‘mercenaries looking for jobs’ in that city.
Besides, if Dalton wants to survive in that terrible place, he’ll be trying to increase his weight class, so there will be a lot of new guys coming in.
If you go all the way there, damn it, I’m sure I’ll graduate soon from being the leader of the Trousers without a single subordinate.
I thought the conversation was over like this, so I was about to go back, but Dalton muttered to me.
“Oh, but. Come to think of it, Karin complained that she couldn’t live because of that bastard, Fior. Huh, then should I transfer it to another tens?”
…… At this timing, letting me know that Karin wants to go somewhere else means that I will allow Karin to be taken to my tensor belt.
So I persuaded Karin that day and succeeded in bringing her to my deciduous ligament.
Now, if I save just 8 more of my subordinates, what will happen?
No, you don’t need all of them, and maybe you can meet one of the heroines of the main character’s party there.
**
And a week later, an announcement was posted in Salzheim that they were looking for a new mercenary from the Whitebeard Mercenary Corps.
Those gathered in front of it were talking about what the Whitebeard Mercenaries were doing, and among them was a girl with fox ears and a tail.
She muttered, wagging her tail in her curiosity.
“The Whitebeard Mercenaries? I’m not sure what kind of mercenary group it is, but I wonder if there’s a job for me there?”
