Chapter 314: Days Of Delay
The rain kept the mood damper, as if it already wasn't, as the Port-O-Bea troops closest to the city remained grim. The last three days proved that while initially having good success, reality takes its place rather quickly. The Reserve Guard was quick to reinforce their remaining positions outside of the city through the main roads, forcing both sides to dig in. The Viligantes of Power were of little help, due to the amount of artillery shells being fired from both sides. They couldn't directly charge in without risking getting blown up, whether by shell, rocket, or other powers. Not until they had a window of opportunity to make a move, and that itself would be dangerous.
"Anyone got any water?" Heskins huffed about, as the thundering of artillery continued around him.
Their makeshift trench was in quite a poor condition, as the thin pieces of wood that one would struggle to call a roof kept some of the rain out, but much of it still fell inside, dampening their clothing and uniforms. The only thing preventing things from getting worse was their commitment to finishing this war. While that was a way to go from them at that current moment, did not mean that they couldn't hold on to that dream.
"Yeah, we finally got some bottles from the latest run." Sera came inside at the right moment, holding a drenched box.
Neither they nor the soldiers closest to them waited, as they opened it without hesitation, towards the clear liquid. Heskins was quick to grab the first metal container, as he opened it without delay and let the water run down his throat.
"Thank powers that we're able to have this right now." Heskins began to wave over Hops and the others with them. "Don't miss out on this yall!"
If only the others knew what was going on over here, would they probably understand their condition. Although Heskins remembered, the rain had slowed their communications down and they hadn't heard from them from the last day or so. What could it mean, well, many things. But the man was sure that they were doing just fine on their side.
.....
With the steam rising overhead, it looked as if there was a large cloud floating over Jamal, as he stood on the highway. Overlooking the scene of craters and dead bodies disgusted him with every passing minute, but this was the reality. The cool air was keeping him collected, as his iconic red flames whipped ever so slightly in a relaxed state. The man had seen so much these days, that he was almost tired of it all.
"Jamal, you still staying out there?" he could hear Alice call from ahead.
"I'm fine," he grumbled loudly enough, although his staggered posture showed otherwise.
For their side of the operation, they were able to cross over the highway after several hours of work, despite the incoming artillery and rockets coming down on them. That was pretty much relegated to Jamal, to which he wished to do one his own accord. The responsibility of keeping as many of their forces alive was essential to their goals, but even all of his power couldn't stop every attack. Those that crashed back into the earth were catastrophic to the ground forces, with almost a guaranteed fatality of any in range. It kept him up at night, as he stood guard, and holding these weapons off for as long as possible.
"I sure hope so." Leon slipped past him, as he peered towards the first layer of trenches they've captured, with a cost. "We'll need you for the upcoming assault soon. Can't waste any more of our time. The schedule is running behind."
"I am aware. I'll be able to join y'all very soon. Just you wait." the words gave Jamal a quick chuckle, his flames waning slightly in response.
"Okay, I'll take your word on it. The city will be ours." Leon finished off, as he continued onto the field, the occasional gunshot creating noise in the still air.
He would be ready for them, Jamal held strong, despite his shaking legs. He could barely feel the painful throbbing, but the man did not care. The time between the first assualt and rain to this ongoing standstill was only temporary after all. This resilence was going to all be paid off accordingly, and Youden would be able to see that progress very, very soon.
