Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Paul vs. Roark (Part 1)
"Go ahead, you can take the first move."
"Gible, Dragon Breath!"
Paul wasted no time after Roark's polite offer, launching the first attack without hesitation.
"Haah~"
Gible gathered energy, unleashing a vivid green stream of draconic breath toward Geodude. Thanks to yesterday's rigorous training, Gible's execution of Dragon Breath was noticeably faster than before.
"Geodude, Hidden Power!"
As the Dragon Breath surged forward, Geodude remained calm, raising its hands to summon its inner power. A cluster of glowing orbs materialized around it and with a swift motion, intercepted the approaching Dragon Breath.
Despite its humble appearance, Hidden Power overwhelmed Dragon Breath in an instant, breaking it apart and continuing toward Gible in a barrage.
"Dig!"
Paul issued the command, and Gible a master of the Dig move, vanished underground in an instant, leaving only a hole behind.
The glowing orbs struck the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust but failing to deal any damage.
Geodude's level wasn't low, but its lack of moves like Earthquake or Magnitude left it unable to deal with Gible while it remained underground. Charging into the tunnel could leave it vulnerable to an ambush, forcing Geodude to anxiously scan its surroundings instead.
"Stay calm, Geodude. Use Rollout."
Noticing Geodude's unease, Roark offered a steadying command.
Where Gible was didn't matter—eventually, it would have to emerge. And with Rollout's increasing power over time, a single hit might be enough to take Gible out.
Following orders, Geodude curled into a ball and began rolling across the battlefield, picking up speed with every moment.
"Attack!"
Beneath the ground, Gible keenly sensed the vibrations from above. After predicting Geodude's rolling trajectory, Gible shot up from underground with a well-timed Dig, striking Geodude directly from below.
Boom!
The attack landed cleanly, dealing significant damage and sending Geodude flying into the air.
Despite the impact, Geodude managed to maintain its rolling form.
"Now, Rollout directly at Gible!"
Roark seized the opportunity, directing Geodude to strike back. As it descended from the air, Geodude locked onto Gible's position and accelerated downward, a meteor-like force gathering behind it.
This was an attack Gible could not escape unscathed.
"Dragon Breath!"
Gible didn't back down, opening its mouth to unleash another green Dragon Breath at the descending Geodude.
But Geodude, in the midst of Rollout, had built up too much power. The Dragon Breath was quickly overcome, and Geodude continued its plunge toward Gible.
A direct hit would undoubtedly deal catastrophic damage to Gible.
"Crunch!"
Paul's delayed command came at the last possible moment.
As Geodude crashed down, Gible lunged forward and clamped down with its powerful jaws, halting Geodude's momentum entirely.
The battlefield fell into a momentary silence. Geodude, still spinning was now caught in Gible's mouth, looking more like a chew toy than a fearsome projectile.
Before long, Geodude's strength gave out, leaving it entirely at Gible's mercy. Half of its body remained trapped in Gible's jaws, while the other half flailed uselessly in the air.
"Wait… is this even possible?"
Roark was utterly stunned by the sight, reminiscent of Conway's infamous Dunsparce scenario with Gible. He couldn't fathom how Gible managed to endure such a powerful attack.
An iconic scene recreated!
Unfortunately, Paul's Gible didn't know Draco Meteor.
"Dragon Breath!"
Still, Dragon Breath was more than enough to finish the job. At such close range, the draconic energy engulfed Geodude, launching it skyward.
Boom!
Geodude was blown away by the ensuing explosion. Its battered form hit the ground and lay still.
"Geodude is unable to battle! Gible wins!" declared the referee.
"Come back, Geodude. You did great." Roark returned Geodude to its Poké Ball, letting out a wry chuckle. "What an unpredictable defense strategy. Though I doubt many Pokémon could pull that off besides Gible."
"Let's go, Onix!"
Roark tossed another Poké Ball, releasing his towering Onix onto the battlefield. The massive rock snake bawl, its sheer size and aura of power intimidates all who faced it.
Gible, however, was unfazed, staring down Onix with fierce determination.
But in the next moment, a beam of red light shot out, recalling Gible to its Poké Ball.
While the anime version of Roark's Onix didn't use moves like Earthquake, this was real life, where there were no move slot restrictions. Roark's confidence in Onix meant it likely had counters for opponents like Gible.
Paul knew he could still beat Onix with Gible, but there was no need to rely on it here. This gym battle wasn't just about winning; it was about honing his style and refining his strategy.
He wouldn't use his powerhouse Ursaring either—this was about growth.
"Elekid, get ready to fight!"
Paul's next Poké Ball released his eager Elekid, who immediately began swinging its arms with anticipation, ready for action.
"A surprising choice to use an Electric-type. What's your plan?" Roark asked curiously before commanding. "Onix, Stealth Rock!"
"Roarrr!"
Onix summoned glowing white stones that scattered across the battlefield, embedding themselves in the ground. If Paul switched Pokémon, the entry hazard would deal damage to the incoming one.
But Paul didn't seem to care.
"Focus Blast!"
Elekid quickly gathered energy into a glowing sphere and hurled it toward Onix, charging forward as it launched the attack.
"Onix, dodge and use Earthquake!"
For such a massive Pokémon, Onix was unexpectedly agile. It twisted its body to evade the Focus Blast, then slammed its tail into the ground, causing a powerful tremor that shook the entire battlefield.
"Elekid, Magnet Rise!"
Elekid leaped into the air, activating its electromagnetic abilities to float above the ground. The Earthquake passed harmlessly beneath it.
Earthquake missed!
