Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Pidgey
"Of course I don't want to sleep alone in this forest! There are so many Bug-Type Pokémon crawling around. What if one gets into my tent?!" Misty shouted, her voice tinged with frustration and a touch of panic. She was clearly not comfortable with her current predicament, letting her emotions spill out in front of Ash.
Ash gave a quick nod, trying to suppress a grin. To him, an angry Misty wasn't frightening—if anything, she seemed rather adorable in moments like this.
After finishing the setup for their camp, including tidying the tent and laying out the sleeping bags, Ash and Misty turned their attention to an equally pressing matter: lunch. Their stomachs were already growling, a telltale sign of their hunger.
Neither Ash nor Misty excelled in cooking, but Misty's skills were arguably worse than Ash's. That left Ash in charge of the meal, with Misty acting as his assistant.
Lunch was straightforward—a mix of cooked food they had purchased earlier in Viridian City and some rice as a staple. Although the taste wasn't extraordinary, Misty, tasting Ash's cooking for the first time, seemed pleasantly surprised.
"Pikachu!" Ash called out as he prepared Pokémon food for his companion. He had adjusted the seasoning to include Tamato Berries, knowing they were Pikachu's favorite. "Here you go, buddy," Ash said, placing the dish before Pikachu.
As they ate, Ash suddenly remembered something. "Oh no! I almost forgot about Pidgey!" He grabbed the Poké Ball from his bag and released the Pokémon inside.
With a flash of white light, Pidgey appeared, looking slightly disoriented. Its tiny frame fluttered for a moment before it landed cautiously on Ash's arm. The little bird seemed wary of its surroundings, its gaze flickering between the humans and Pikachu.
"Hi, nice to meet you," Ash said gently, extending his hand toward Pidgey. His tone was warm, and his smile genuine.
"Pika-pi!" Pikachu chimed in, waving its paw in a friendly gesture.
Pidgey hesitated, its sharp eyes locked on Ash. It recognized the Poké Ball he held—it instinctively understood what the device was for. The realization dawned on Pidgey that it had been captured by this human, though it wasn't entirely sure how it felt about that.
After a brief moment, Pidgey relaxed slightly. Ash's demeanor radiated kindness, and Pikachu's cheerful energy added to the comforting atmosphere. Deciding it could be worse, Pidgey gave a tentative chirp.
A low gurgle from its stomach reminded Pidgey of its hunger. Its eyes darted to the pot where the remnants of lunch were simmering.
"I know you're hungry," Ash said, noticing Pidgey's gaze. "But this food isn't great for Pokémon like you. It's better for humans." He rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a small stash of standard Pokémon food. "Here, this will have to do for now. I'll make something better for you in a bit."
Pidgey let out a happy chirp and eagerly dug into the bowl Ash placed before it. Seeing the tiny Pokémon so content made Ash smile.
"Do you need help with that?" Misty asked, noticing Ash busy at work preparing a more tailored meal for Pidgey. She had already eaten her fill and wanted to lend a hand.
"Sure, you can help chop these berries," Ash replied, handing her a small pile of Lansat Berries.
Lansat Berries, with their sun-like appearance and a mix of sweet and spicy flavors, were a perfect addition to the recipe Ash was crafting. They were also known to improve a Pokémon's eyesight with regular consumption, making them ideal for Pidgey.
As Ash and Misty worked together, they created a recipe that was not only nutritious but also appealing to Pidgey's taste. The moment Ash placed the dish before Pidgey, its reaction was immediate. The little bird flapped its wings excitedly and chirped with delight before diving into the food.
"Looks like someone approves," Misty said with a chuckle, watching Pidgey enjoy the meal.
"Yeah," Ash agreed, pleased with the outcome. He returned to his own lunch while Pidgey finished its food and rested contentedly on the grass. Pikachu soon joined Pidgey, the two Pokémon exchanging playful chirps and squeaks.
With lunch wrapped up, Ash turned his attention to cleaning. "Time to wash the dishes. After that, we'll start the afternoon training," he announced.
Misty grabbed a few utensils and followed Ash to a nearby pond. Together, they washed the pots and plates, their reflections rippling in the clear water.
"What's the plan for training?" Misty asked as she scrubbed a bowl.
"Well," Ash began, "Pikachu needs to learn Thunderbolt as soon as possible. It's a much stronger move than Thunder Shock, and once Pikachu masters it, Thunder Shock will probably be retired."
Misty nodded thoughtfully. "That makes sense. Thunderbolt will give Pikachu a real edge in battle."
"And for Pidgey," Ash continued, "I need to figure out what moves it already knows before I can decide what to focus on."
As they wrapped up the dishes, Ash's mind buzzed with ideas for the training session. Pikachu's potential with Thunderbolt excited him, and he was eager to see what Pidgey could bring to the table.
Back at the campsite, Ash and Misty set up a small training area. "All right, Pikachu! Let's start with some exercises to build up your Electric-Type power," Ash called out. Pikachu hopped to its feet, its red cheeks sparking with anticipation.
Meanwhile, Ash turned to Pidgey. "Your turn! Let's see what you've got."
"Bo!" Pidgey chirped, flapping its wings as if ready to take on any challenge.
The training session unfolded with Ash coaching both Pokémon. Pikachu practiced channeling its electricity, attempting to produce a more powerful spark each time. Pidgey, on the other hand, demonstrated moves like Gust and Quick Attack, impressing Ash with its speed and precision.
"Great job, both of you!" Ash praised after a productive hour. He handed each Pokémon a berry as a reward, earning him cheerful cries of gratitude.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting golden hues across the forest, the group settled down for a moment of rest. Misty stretched out on the grass, Pikachu curled up beside her, while Pidgey perched on Ash's shoulder, nuzzling him affectionately.
"Looks like Pidgey's starting to trust you," Misty observed with a smile.
"Yeah," Ash said, reaching up to gently stroke Pidgey's feathers. "I think we're going to make a great team."
The tranquil moment was interrupted by the distant rustling of leaves, a reminder that the forest held countless adventures yet to be discovered. With their bond strengthening and their goals set, Ash and his companions were ready to face whatever came next.
