Chapter 28: Chapter 28: To the Viridian Forest
"I never expected something like this to happen!" Ash grinned ear to ear as he sat down to breakfast in the restaurant. He had just received some fantastic news: his Trainer level had been raised, and he had officially reached the Poké Ball level. With this promotion, along with the compensation from the Alliance, Ash would receive 6,000 yen a month this year, which was a huge sum. He could even send some money home to help his family.
"By the way, Misty, what reward did you get?" Ash asked, curious about Misty's reward. However, Misty had been quiet ever since the announcement, and her expression seemed mixed—both surprised and a little downcast.
"I don't want to talk about it," Misty replied quickly, not wanting Ash to pry into her personal matters. She wasn't ready to share the details of her family's situation, especially not the reward from the Alliance, which wasn't for her personally but was significant for her family.
"Okay..." Ash nodded, realizing it might be best not to press her. He knew Misty would open up when she was ready, and asking too many questions would only make things uncomfortable.
"By the way, we bought plenty of food yesterday, so we can leave for Viridian Forest soon. Do you need anything else?" Ash reminded her, eager to get going on their next adventure.
"No!" Misty shook her head, brushing away her uneasy thoughts. She didn't realize until now that Viridian Forest, which they were about to enter, was home to many Bug-type Pokémon—something she had an unfortunate fear of.
---
Viridian Forest, located between Viridian City and Pewter City, was a large forest on Route 2 of the Kanto region. Its dense trees formed a natural labyrinth, making it a famous but somewhat perilous destination for trainers. In the past, many trainers had gotten lost while exploring or training in the forest. However, thanks to the development efforts of the Kanto Alliance, a road now connected Viridian City and Pewter City, making it much easier to navigate.
Despite the improvements, the forest remained a wild, untamed place. It was dark and humid, with the thick foliage blocking much of the sunlight. The forest was also home to many Bug-type Pokémon, as well as some rare Flying-type species. It was an ideal environment for trainers looking to catch and train these Pokémon.
"Before we enter the forest, we should prepare some paralysis heals and antidotes," Ash said as they approached the entrance to Viridian Forest. A warning sign stood tall beside the path, advising trainers to take precautions when entering. It listed items needed to handle potential dangers in the forest, including the possibility of encounters with Bug-types.
"I... Can we... not go through here?" Misty suddenly asked, a nervous edge in her voice. She regretted suggesting this route. The fear of Bug-type Pokémon that she had forgotten about earlier now overwhelmed her.
Ash looked at her, a little exasperated. "We've already come this far..." He looked back at the entrance of the forest and then at Misty, who had started to hide behind him. She was already scared before they even entered—how would she manage once they were inside?
"And I think, as a trainer, you can't be afraid of a specific type of Pokémon! If you're scared of them, it could become a huge weakness," Ash explained, trying to reason with her. "If your rival knows you're afraid of a certain Pokémon, it could cost you in battles."
Misty hesitated. Her ultimate goal was to become a Water-type Master, and to achieve that, she knew she had to overcome any weaknesses—especially one as obvious as this.
"I know... but it's just so scary..." Misty admitted, her voice trembling. She had tried to overcome this fear in the past, but it wasn't something that could be conquered easily. Even though Caterpie was a small, harmless Bug-type, it still terrified her.
"Don't worry," Ash said with a reassuring smile, grabbing Misty's hand and leading her toward the forest. "We're going to face this fear together."
Misty struggled at first, but Ash's determination was unwavering. She tried to pull away, but he held onto her tightly, gently pulling her deeper into the forest. Eventually, Misty stopped fighting and, feeling helpless, allowed herself to be led forward, although she kept her eyes darting nervously around the trees, half-expecting a Bug-type to appear at any moment.
"There's nothing to be afraid of," Ash said, his voice calm. "Even if a Pokémon shows up, I'll protect you." He wasn't particularly fond of Bug-types, but he was confident in his ability to handle whatever came their way. He even wondered if he might catch a Catterpie on the way. Catterpie was a Bug-type that evolved into Butterfree, a solid and versatile Pokémon with a strong potential for battle.
Caterpie was an ideal Pokémon for a Rookie Trainer. It had a short growth cycle and could evolve into Butterfree within a week if trained properly. Butterfree had the dual Bug/Flying typing, with the Compound Eyes ability that enhanced its accuracy—a valuable trait in battle.
"Let's just see what happens..." Ash thought to himself, considering the idea of catching a Catterpie. He didn't mind having one in his team, even if it was just for a short while.
As they ventured deeper into the forest, Misty suddenly let out a sharp scream, startling Ash.
"What's wrong?" Ash turned around, but Misty had clung to his back, her face buried against him in fear. She was shaking, her arms wrapped tightly around him.
"Pikachu!" Pikachu, sensing something, pointed its tiny paw toward a small green-striped Pokémon that was emerging from the bushes on the left. The Pokémon had large, round eyes, a green back, and a white belly. Most notably, it had a pair of red, Y-shaped antennae on its head and yellow circular patterns on either side of its body.
It was a Catterpie, a Bug-type Pokémon.
Catterpie was well-known for being one of the most common Bug-types found in Viridian Forest. Its cute and harmless appearance, however, was enough to make Misty panic, as she had an extreme fear of Bug-types. The Catterpie, startled by Misty's scream, curled up and peeked out from behind a leaf, observing the group warily.
"Don't worry, Misty. It's just a Catterpie," Ash said gently, trying to calm her down. He glanced at the Pokémon, debating whether or not to catch it. "It's not dangerous."
Misty buried her face deeper into Ash's back. "It's scary!" she insisted, still trembling.
Ash chuckled softly, watching the Catterpie. He knew it was harmless, and he could tell that Misty's fear was more about her past experiences than the Pokémon itself. "It's okay, really. And hey, maybe I'll catch it."
Catterpie wasn't the most powerful Pokémon, but it had potential. It could evolve into Butterfree, a solid and dependable member of any team. And with its ability Scale Powder, it was immune to some status effects—something that could come in handy during a battle.
"Let's take it slow. I'll make sure you're safe, Misty," Ash said as he pulled out a Poké Ball, ready to catch the Catterpie. Misty's fear was understandable, but this was a step toward overcoming it, and Ash was determined to help her through it.
---
With Ash's calm reassurance and the small Catterpie standing before them, Misty slowly began to calm down, realizing that maybe, just maybe, this could be the first step toward conquering her fear of Bug-types once and for all.
