Pokémon: The truth behind the power

Chapter 6: Chapter 5: An Unexpected Call

James woke up in the Pokémon Center room, sunlight gently filtering through the curtains. He stretched, feeling the softness of the sheets and the faint aroma of medicinal herbs that filled the air. Beside him, his Arcanine, slept peacefully, his golden fur shining in the morning light.

"Only three months until the Indigo Conference," James reflected while petting Arcanine. Excitement and determination filled his chest. He knew he had to train hard to meet the challenges ahead. With renewed resolve, he got up and prepared to head into Viridian Forest, a perfect place to enhance his skills and those of his Pokémon.

Upon reaching a clearing surrounded by tall, leafy trees, James decided it was the ideal spot to set up camp. He took out his backpack and began organizing his gear: a mat, some berries for his Pokémon, and a small box with basic supplies. As he did this, he watched Hitmonlee, warming up by stretching his legs with agility.

"Let's go, team!" James exclaimed enthusiastically. "Today will be a great training day."

With a wave of his hand, he called all his Pokémon. His Exeggutor, slowly approached, its leaves swaying gently in the breeze. Gengar floated in behind him, a mischievous glint in his eyes reflecting the excitement of training.

"First, we'll work on coordination," said James as he positioned himself. "Arcanine and Hitmonlee, we'll start with a speed and precision exercise."

James set up a simple circuit using some branches and stones he found in the forest. "Arcanine, use Extreme Speed to navigate the circuit. Hitmonlee, follow with Low Kick on the obstacles I place."

Arcanine nodded determinedly and dashed through the circuit at full speed. His golden figure blurred among the trees as he dodged branches and leaped over stones. James watched in admiration; Arcanine was in his element.

"Perfect! Now Hitmonlee," said James while pointing at the obstacles. Hitmonlee prepared himself, focusing before launching forward. With a precise kick, he knocked down a fallen branch before continuing through the circuit.

"Excellent work! Now let's make everything flow," encouraged James as he watched his Pokémon execute their moves in perfect synchronization.

After several repetitions of the circuit, James decided it was time to work on each Pokémon's special moves. "Exeggutor, it's your turn," he said as he approached Exeggutor. "I want you to use Giga Drain on that tree."

Exeggutor raised its leaves to the sky and concentrated its energy. A green beam shot forth towards the nearby tree as its leaves began to glow while absorbing energy from its surroundings.

"That's it! Now try to do it faster," urged James.

As Exeggutor continued practicing Giga Drain, Gengar decided to join in on the training. "Gengar, do you want to show Exeggutor how to use Shadow Ball?" asked James.

With a mischievous smile, Gengar began gathering dark energy between its hands before launching a glowing sphere at a fallen log. The impact resonated in the air and left a visible mark on the wood.

...

After two days of intense training in the forest, James decided to record his progress in his journal:

Training Journal - Day 2

Today was another productive day in Viridian Forest. Arcanine has reached his maximum gym level, which means improving his skills will be a challenge. However, we have been practicing his moves and refining his technique. It's crucial for him to focus on strategic moves like Flamethrower and Extreme Speed; these will be key for our future battles.

Hitmonlee has also been training hard. His level has increased significantly but still needs to polish some moves like High Jump Kick. Exeggutor has shown great progress with Giga Drain; I believe he will soon reach an intermediate level at the gym.

Gengar, has been working on using Shadow Ball more accurately. His speed has improved notably, which is essential for evading enemy attacks. Pidgeot, has also been practicing agility; her aerial skills are fundamental for our strategies.

Golduck, has been training his swimming ability and using Hydro Pump more powerfully. And Tauros, is perfecting his Tackle and Raging Bull attacks to increase his offensive power.

James closed his journal with a satisfied smile as he thought about his Pokémon's advancements. The experience of camping and training in the forest had strengthened their bond.

After two days of intensive training, James decided it was time to leave the forest for supplies. He headed to the Pokémon Center to buy essential items: potions, berries, and some Poké Balls.

Upon entering the Pokémon Center, the familiarity of the place comforted him. While waiting for Nurse Joy to check on his Pokémon, he noticed a television where Professor Oak was presenting his new project: the Pokédex. Excitement filled the room as trainers listened attentively.

When Joy returned with his Pokémon, she asked him: "Are you James Morgan?"

"Yes," he replied calmly.

"Your father left a missed call," Joy said with a kind smile. "You should call him when you can."

James felt a slight pang of surprise; although he kept in touch with his parents through letters and messages via their butler Hopkins, he hadn't received a direct call since deciding to embark on his journey. He thanked Joy for the information and headed towards a public phone inside the Pokémon Center.

With his heart racing slightly from anticipation, James dialed the familiar number while wondering what he might say to his father after so long. "I hope everything is okay," he murmured to himself as the phone rang on the other end of the line.

James dialed the family number at the public phone in the Pokémon Center, feeling a mix of anticipation and nervousness. The tone rang repeatedly; each time it rang made his heart beat faster. Finally, a familiar voice answered on the other end.

"Hello! Morgan here?" said Hopkins, their butler warmly.

"Hello, Hopkins. It's me, James," replied James while trying to remain calm.

"Young James! It's a pleasure to hear your voice. One moment please; I'll inform your parents that you're on line," said Hopkins before putting him on hold.

James waited for a moment as anxiety built up in his chest until finally hearing his mother's voice.

"James! What joy it is to hear from you!" Mrs. Morgan's voice sounded excited and relieved. "Are you okay? Have you had any problems? Are you hurt?"

"Everything is fine, Mom," James replied with a smile. "I've been training and enjoying my journey. Don't worry."

"I'm glad to hear that," she said although her tone still reflected concern. "I just want you to be safe."

James could picture his mother biting her lip while speaking—a habit she had when worried.

"Hello son," interrupted Mr. Morgan's deeper voice sounding somewhat uncomfortable yet concerned as well. "I hope you are doing well."

"Yes Dad. I'm fine," said James trying to sound confident while they exchanged pleasantries.

After some light conversation moments later James decided to ask what he really wanted to know: "What did you need me for? Is there something important?"

Mr. Morgan took a deep breath before responding: "In two weeks we will have an important dinner with the Tsubaki family from Sinnoh."

James frowned upon hearing that name; he wasn't familiar with them and didn't show immediate reaction.

"They are expanding their business into Unova," continued his father. "We want to take advantage of this opportunity to expand our investments in tourism and real estate in Sinnoh."

James felt slight unease upon hearing this: "Does that mean I have to come home?"

"Yes," Mr. Morgan nodded firmly yet understandingly. "We want you to meet them during dinner; their daughter is also a trainer specializing in Psychic-type Pokémon."

James nodded slowly while listening to his father; meeting another trainer intrigued him but there was something else that concerned him.

"Also," added Mrs. Morgan excitedly "we would like you to get a talented Psychic-type Pokémon native to Indigo so that you can make a good impression."

James fell silent for a moment; as an intermediate-level breeder having obtained that title before starting traveling he knew how to evaluate a Pokémon's talent but capturing one just as a gift left an unpleasant taste in his mouth—he wondered how that Pokémon would feel being given away to someone they didn't know.

"Why can't we just meet without gifts?" suggested James feeling uncomfortable pangs within him.

"That wouldn't be appropriate," Mr. Morgan replied firmly yet compassionately. "We want to ensure that you have something special to offer them."

As he thought about it vague memories from his previous life began forming in mind: A psychic trainer moving from Sinnoh to Unova—but he couldn't connect all dots together.

"Alright… I'll look for a Psychic-type native from Indigo," finally accepted James with resigned sigh.

"Thank you son," said Mrs. Morgan with relief evident in her voice. "We know you can do it."

After exchanging some more words and saying goodbye James hung up feeling overwhelmed by mixed emotions; though knowing he had obligations towards family expectations couldn't help but wonder what that psychic trainer would truly be like—and what would happen with whatever Pokémon captured for her?

James hung up feeling how pressure from conversation settled within him; returning home in two weeks for dinner with Tsubaki family filled him with excitement yet anxiety—knowing he needed find an impressive Psychic-type native from Indigo for both parents' expectations as well future partners' approval—he stood silently gazing towards forest while mind began reviewing options.

"What Pokémon could I bring?" thought considering each one carefully: "Could be an Abra—they're fast have great potential—or maybe Staryu although not Psychic until evolves could be good option." His mind continued exploring possibilities: "Slowpoke has special charm Spoink energetic fun." However upon thinking Drowzee dismissed immediately—not wanting Pokémon didn't fit image desired project—"Mime Jr.'s adorable good repertoire moves but… Smoochum could also be interesting."

While weighing options pressure mounted; knowing needed choose wisely—not only fulfill family expectations ensure chosen Pokémon felt valued loved—with each idea passing mind realized searching perfect Pokémon would be just as important any battle faced—clear resolution formed within him as ventured deeper into forest.
