The Pokémon team captured by Champion Green, as referenced in the "Origins" storyline, were immensely powerful. With species strengths exceeding 500, they were considered top-tier in battles. Among them, only Pidgeot had slightly lower stats, yet it remained a crucial component of the lineup. Together, this team was strong enough to secure victory at the Indigo Plateau Conference.

Heading Back

"Squirtle, let's head back," Gary said with determination.

He pulled out his mountain bike, placed Squirtle securely on the front, and pedaled towards Viridian City.

As he neared the city gates, the sky suddenly darkened. Thunderclouds loomed overhead, rumbling ominously.

Boom!

A loud clap of thunder echoed through the sky, halting Gary in his tracks. He turned to glance back in the direction of Pallet Town.

"I hope Ash is okay," Gary muttered, a hint of concern in his voice.

Although Gary considered Ash a novice Trainer, he knew Ash's Pikachu was destined for greatness. This storm was no coincidence—it marked a pivotal moment in Pikachu's development. This "thunder baptism" was what would later make Ash's Pikachu one of the strongest in existence.

Viridian City Pokémon Center

Meanwhile, at the Pokémon Center in Viridian City, Nurse Joy greeted Trainers with her usual warmth.

"Welcome! Any Pokémon left here will receive the best treatment. Please feel free to entrust them to us," she said cheerfully.

Viridian City was a bustling hub in the Kanto Region. Its proximity to Pallet Town and its development made it a prime location. Ironically, its prosperity was largely tied to Team Rocket's covert operations. To mask their illegal activities, Team Rocket had invested heavily in making Viridian City appear prosperous and safe.

Even the strongest gym in the Kanto Region, the Viridian Gym, was secretly run by Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket.

"Mewtwo should still be in stasis," Gary mused as he approached the city.

In the original timeline, Team Rocket's genetically engineered Pokémon, Mewtwo, would awaken within three months, just before the Indigo Plateau Conference. Gary remembered that in the original story, even he had been overpowered by Mewtwo when it first revealed its strength.

Avoiding Trouble

Gary had no intention of challenging Team Rocket. Even though he was Professor Oak's grandson, he understood that going up against such a massive organization was beyond his current abilities. Team Rocket's roots ran deep, with operations spanning the Kanto and Johto Regions, and even extending to other territories.

For now, Gary focused on his own growth as a Trainer. The last thing he needed was to provoke a sleeping giant like Team Rocket.

"If the system assigns a mission involving Team Rocket, I'll have to think twice before accepting it," Gary thought.

After all, even in a dormant state, Mewtwo was growing stronger. When fully awakened, its power rivaled that of legendary Pokémon like Mew.

"Becoming a top Trainer is my priority. Let others worry about Team Rocket."

Shopping for Supplies

The next morning, Gary set out for the Pokémon Department Store in Viridian City. With two Pokémon on his team, he needed to stock up on supplies and acquire evolution stones.

He planned to purchase a Leaf Stone for evolving Exeggcute into Exeggutor and a Fire Stone for obtaining Arcanine, a rare and highly sought-after Pokémon in the Kanto Region.

In the wild, encountering Growlithe or Arcanine was exceedingly rare. Most were controlled by the police force, with Growlithe often serving as police partners.

Gary knew he could secure a Growlithe through his grandfather's connections, bypassing the need to resort to illegal methods like the black market. However, he also understood the limitations—only male Growlithe were available for adoption. Female Growlithe were reserved for breeding programs and tightly controlled by law enforcement.

Wanted Posters

Upon reaching the Pokémon Department Store, Gary noticed wanted posters on a notice board near the entrance.

The posters displayed two figures—one male and one female—but only their torsos were visible, with no facial features shown. The woman's pink hair was the only identifiable characteristic.

"Team Rocket," Gary muttered, instantly recognizing the duo.

The poorly designed wanted posters irritated him. "How is anyone supposed to recognize them without faces? Viridian City's Officer Jenny is really slacking off."

System Task

As Gary stepped inside, the system chimed:

[Mission: Prevent Viridian Pokémon Center from being destroyed by Ash's Pikachu.]

[Reward: 10 Low-Level Rare Candies.]

Gary froze.

"Really?" he thought, sighing.

Initially, he had no plans to interfere with Ash's business. However, 10 Rare Candies were too valuable to ignore.

"Fine, I'll deal with it tonight," he decided. "The task isn't difficult, and the reward is worth it."

Gary knew that Ash's Pikachu, severely injured from earlier battles, was currently being treated at the Pokémon Center. Based on the timeline, Team Rocket would attempt to infiltrate the center that evening.

For now, he focused on his shopping.

Shopping for Evolution Stones

Inside the department store, Gary followed the attendant's directions to the third floor, where evolution stones were sold.

"Good morning! What kind of evolution stone are you looking for?" a cheerful saleswoman greeted him.

Gary explained his needs, listing both the Leaf Stone and Fire Stone. The saleswoman quickly retrieved the items and packaged them neatly.

Satisfied with his purchases, Gary thought ahead. With these stones, he could work on evolving Exeggcute and preparing for Arcanine's addition to his team.

Preparing for the Night

As evening approached, Gary parked his bike near the Pokémon Center and found a spot to observe the surroundings.

He knew that Team Rocket's infamous trio—Jessie, James, and Meowth—would soon arrive, intent on stealing Pikachu. While their antics often bordered on comedic, they could still cause significant damage if left unchecked.

Gary wasn't worried about their skill level. His concern was ensuring the Pokémon Center didn't sustain any lasting damage.

By the time night fell, Gary was ready. With Squirtle by his side and Exeggcute's Poké Ball at the ready, he waited patiently for Team Rocket to make their move.

"Let's handle this quickly," Gary muttered. "And then, it's back to training."

His eyes gleamed with determination as he prepared to face the night's challenges.
