Pokémon: I’m Really Not a Team Rocket Spy

Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Mighty Butterfree

It was a relief that the attack was just Water Pulse instead of Hydro Pump. Hippowdon, known for its high durability, managed to endure the blow despite the impact.

Meanwhile, Butterfree seized the opportunity. With a subtle flutter of its wings, a faint current began to circulate between it and Vaporeon.

The speed advantage that Excadrill had previously held was nullified in an instant. With Butterfree's skill, its Tailwind would likely persist for a significant amount of time.

But that wasn't all. As Butterfree's wings continued to tremble, a cascade of powders began to fall, mixing with the airborne sand and swiftly spreading toward Excadrill and Hippowdon.

Sleep Powder + Poison Powder + Stun Spore.

Unlike in the games, reality imposed no restrictions limiting status conditions to just one per Pokémon. The combination of three powder-based moves was nothing short of devastating.

While Excadrill's Steel typing rendered it immune to Poison Powder, the other two powders posed a serious threat. It quickly dug into the ground with its claws—using Dig to escape the attack.

Hippowdon, on the other hand, let out a loud roar, intensifying the surrounding Sandstorm. Clearly, it was using the move to enhance its Sand Stream ability.

The fierce sandstorm immediately swept away the powders, leaving no trace behind.

"Darn it! How are we supposed to see anything now?"

The raging sandstorm not only countered the powder moves but also obscured the audience's view. Nathan, one of the spectators, started to curse under his breath.

However, the storm didn't last long before it began to subside. It wasn't because Hippowdon couldn't sustain the storm's intensity, but because someone had intervened.

"Vapoo!"

Vaporeon's body began to emit a blue glow as storm clouds formed above the battlefield. Yet, no rain fell.

"Even if Vaporeon knows Rain Dance, it's hard for it to overpower Hippowdon's Sand Stream in this scenario," Maki explained to Nathan. "If Vaporeon were swapped out for a Pelipper or a Politoed, it might stand a better chance of suppressing the sandstorm."

Even so, the sandstorm had weakened significantly, which was good news for spectators like Maki and Nathan —it at least made the battle visible again.

Excadrill needed time to complete its Dig, giving the opposing trainer a valuable opening.

Quiver Dance!

This is the ultimate move granted to Bug-types. Compared to Swords Dance or Dragon Dance, it's in a league of its own. After all, some call Quiver Dance the "little Earthmaster."

The move boosts Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed simultaneously.

Recognizing that its weather advantage couldn't be maintained against Vaporeon's interference, Hippowdon charged forward on its stubby legs. Its gaping maw, crackling with electricity, lunged toward Vaporeon with Thunder Fang!

Vaporeon made no attempt to dodge. Instead, it began preparing Hydro Pump at close range. The Thunder Fang sank into Vaporeon's body, causing it visible pain, but its high durability allowed it to endure.

In retaliation, Vaporeon unleashed its Hydro Pump directly onto Hippowdon's face.

Accuracy issues aside, missing at such close range would be unthinkable. Maki mused that if the trainer failed here, they might as well release Vaporeon on the spot.

Vaporeon's high Special Attack, combined with the power of Hydro Pump, overwhelmed Hippowdon. The bulky Ground-type was sent flying ten meters away, its eyes spinning in defeat.

However, Vaporeon wasn't unscathed. As it finished off Hippowdon, Excadrill emerged from underground, landing a direct hit to Vaporeon's abdomen.

Butterfree immediately responded with Bug Buzz, aiming to repel Excadrill. To everyone's surprise, Excadrill ignored the attack, its claws gleaming with a metallic sheen. It pinned Vaporeon down with Metal Claw before unleashing its most powerful Ground-type move—Earthquake!

Pinned by Excadrill, Vaporeon couldn't move. It let out a pained cry, attempting one last Water Pulse, but the effort fell short.

Hippowdon's Thunder Fang and Excadrill's devastating combo of Dig, Metal Claw, and Earthquake had drained the last of Vaporeon's strength.

Vaporeon is unable to battle!

Excadrill's attack was successful, but it came at a cost. Butterfree's Bug Buzz, amplified by Quiver Dance, struck directly.

The dispersing sand revealed Excadrill, battered and barely standing. Its labored breaths betrayed the immense damage it had taken.

"But isn't Excadrill a Steel-type? Shouldn't it resist Bug-type moves? How is this Butterfree so strong?"

Nathan was stunned to see a Butterfree unleash such power, completely shattering his preconceived notions of Bug-types.

"Tinted Lens!" Maki declared, emphasizing each word.

He knew well the immense boost this ability provided to high-offense Pokémon. With Quiver Dance, Butterfree had barely made it into this league of exceptional battlers.

The match wasn't over yet. After both sides lost a Pokémon, the left-side trainer sent out Golem and Claydol, while the right-side trainer responded with a Cacturne that has Sand Veil ability, taking advantage of the lingering sandstorm.

Empowered by Quiver Dance, Butterfree swiftly defeated Excadrill, reclaiming honor for Bug-types.

Despite taking a heavy Iron Head, which nearly ended the battle, Butterfree managed to recover health using Giga Drain against Golem.

Finally, against Claydol, whose Psychic typing countered Butterfree, it endured multiple Psychic attacks and danced another Quiver Dance, regaining health with Giga Drain.

By the end of the match, Butterfree had defeated three opponents, cementing its place as the MVP.

"This… This is a Butterfree?"

Nathan couldn't believe how this humble Bug-type had shattered his expectations.

Maki, however, remained unfazed. "This Butterfree is strong, but it's nearing its peak. Unlike Giovanni, not everyone can bring out the full potential of a Bug-type Pokémon. Its rapid growth comes at a cost."
