Chapter 44: Blackthorn City
The group boarded the sleek bullet train, its hum of power a sharp contrast to the natural scenery outside. As the train began to move, Casey gazed out the window, her eyes tracing the blur of trees and hills.
"You know," Casey said thoughtfully, "I always forget Blackthorn City even has a bullet train connection."
Haru leaned back in his seat, arms crossed. "It's a new addition. Most maps haven't even updated to include it yet. This line connects all the way to Kanto."
James, who had been looking through his Pokégear, perked up at the mention of Kanto. "Ah, yes. My home. It's been a while since I've been back."
Jessie, sitting beside him, smirked as she chimed in. "Mine too, James. Though I'll admit, my hometown was closer to Mount Silver. I doubt it's changed much."
The group lapsed into a comfortable silence, the rhythmic clatter of the train filling the air as the landscape outside shifted, signaling their approach to Blackthorn City.
As the train sped through the countryside, Haru gazed out the window, lost in thought. The journey to Blackthorn City was always a bit more nostalgic for him—especially given the complicated history with the city's gym leader, Clair.
"Are you nervous?" Casey asked, her voice breaking the silence. She had noticed Haru's distant expression and figured it had to do with the upcoming gym battle.
Haru turned to her, offering a small smile. "A little. I've faced Clair before, but things... didn't end well." His gaze dropped to his hands, remembering the harsh rejection he'd gotten the last time he tried to claim his final Johto badge.
"Clair can be tough," James remarked with a thoughtful look. "But you've beaten so many others. You'll be fine, Haru."
Jessie, ever the skeptic, raised an eyebrow. "The last time I checked, Clair wasn't exactly the warmest gym leader in Johto. She has her pride, and you've definitely rubbed her the wrong way before."
"That's putting it mildly," Haru muttered, his expression growing darker. "She kicked me out of her gym the moment I asked for the badge. Let's just say, we don't exactly get along."
"Complicated relationship?" Casey asked, catching the underlying tension in his voice.
Haru nodded, looking out the window once again. "Exactly. I don't know if she'll even agree to battle me, but I have to try."
The train picked up speed as they neared Blackthorn, the towering mountains surrounding the city becoming more visible. Casey glanced at him, trying to lighten the mood. "Hey, no matter what, you've got a solid team. And if things get too bad, we can always work something out."
"Thanks, Casey," Haru replied with a half-smile. "I just hope it doesn't come to that. I want to finish what I started six years ago."
The group sat in silence as the train approached its destination. As they pulled into Blackthorn City, they could see the towering cliffs and misty skies surrounding the city, a place that always seemed a little mysterious to Haru.
"Ready?" James asked, standing up and stretching as the train came to a halt.
Haru took a deep breath and stood up, grabbing his bag. "Let's do this."
Haru then felt something, a Pokémon. "Hey Guys did you feel that".
James just looked at him a bit confused. "What do you mens Haru".
Haru just srugged. "I just felt like a Pokémon was looking at him".
Jessie looked at him wait that smug smile. "Probably your imagination".
Haru just sighed as he tough to him self. "Probably".
Haru continued to walk alongside his group as they disembarked from the bullet train, still feeling the odd sensation of being watched. His eyes kept scanning the surroundings, but he didn't see anything that would give away the presence of a Pokémon.
"I don't know, it just felt... different," he muttered to himself, shaking his head as he looked up at the imposing cliffs surrounding Blackthorn City. The city felt cold, distant, almost as if it were a place suspended between reality and something else. It was the perfect hiding spot for any Pokémon trying to stay out of sight.
James glanced at Haru. "If you're this paranoid, I bet Clair's just going to make things even worse," he teased, trying to lighten the mood.
Jessie shot him a look, annoyed at the comment, but Haru didn't seem bothered. Instead, his mind was on the odd sensation he'd felt earlier. He couldn't shake the feeling that something—or someone—was watching them.
"I'm sure it's nothing," Haru muttered, turning his attention back to the group. "Let's focus on the gym first. Clair is waiting, and I want to get this over with."
Casey was the first to agree. "Right, no time to waste. Let's get that last badge!"
As they made their way through the city streets toward the Blackthorn Gym, Haru couldn't help but feel that strange presence again. It was almost as if the very city itself had a secret, a Pokémon that had been waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.
Unbeknownst to Haru and his friends, the Pokémon that had been observing them was indeed Yamask, the mysterious and powerful Pokémon Haru had freed from its captivity not too long ago. Yamask, ever cautious and elusive, had been following the group from a distance, waiting for the perfect time to make its presence known. It was aware of Haru's connection to it, and it wasn't quite ready to face him yet.
The city's mist seemed to thicken as they walked deeper into Blackthorn, and Yamasak watched from a nearby shadow, its eyes glowing faintly. It had its reasons for keeping its distance, but Haru's growing awareness of its presence meant its time was drawing closer.
Casey spoke what was in everyone mind. "Why is there so many misty in this place".
Haru then spoke to him as he looked at her. "It is winter that why, it doesn't help this town was made in the mountains".
Jessie then spoke. "So where is the Gym".
Haru then pointed at a place. "That".
They looked and saw a Giant mention, with that of a Gym logo and dragon Pokémon statues, but they also noticed a sine that says The Gym is close today
Casey squinted at the sign, then turned to Haru. "Wait, what? The Gym's closed? But we just got here!"
Haru's brow furrowed slightly, his eyes scanning the grand structure ahead of them. "Looks like it... Maybe it's for maintenance or something. Clair's usually in there, so it's weird she'd close it without notice."
James scratched his head. "Well, we did come all the way here. Maybe we can talk to someone inside, get some info on why it's closed."
Jessie, always a bit more impatient, crossed her arms. "I don't care about maintenance. I just want that badge for Haru." She glanced at Haru. "What do you think we should do?"
Haru took a moment, feeling the weight of the situation. The mist surrounding the city was thick, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The presence he'd felt earlier, the hidden Pokémon, was still lingering in his thoughts. But the Gym... this was his chance to move forward, and he couldn't afford to waste it.
"Let's see if we can find someone in the town who knows why it's closed," Haru suggested. "I'm sure someone here has the info. If not, we'll just have to wait until tomorrow. We can take a look around the town and prepare for the fight."
Casey nodded in agreement, though she still looked disappointed. "Yeah, I guess we'll have to make the best of it. But I'm not waiting forever."
As they turned to leave the Gym area and explore the rest of the town, Haru kept his senses sharp. The mist was getting thicker, and he couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, but this time it felt different. Something was definitely lurking in the shadows of Blackthorn City, and he couldn't afford to let his guard down.
"Let's stick together," Haru said, his voice low but firm. "Something feels off about today."
The group nodded, their playful banter fading into quiet uncertainty as they moved deeper into the city.
The group went to the Pokémon center, where they ask Nurse Joy and she explained that Clar bad been gone for a few days, as she had went to train as she explained she would come back Tomorrow.
Everyone just sighed, as they decided to relax as Haru then pulled out the Pokémon egg, as he looked it and so did the group they were sure it was going to be a Dragon type, but what Pokémon they were not sure, Haru had been talking good care of sense they got the egg they are just waiting for it hatch.
As they settled into the Pokémon Center, the quiet hum of the healing machines filled the air. The group found a comfortable spot to sit, their exhaustion from the day's travel starting to catch up with them. Haru placed the Pokémon egg gently on the table in front of them, as they all gathered around it, their curiosity growing with each passing moment.
Casey, unable to hide her excitement, leaned in closer to get a better look at the egg. "Do you think it's really a Dragon-type? I mean, it looks like it could be."
Haru nodded thoughtfully. "It's definitely been a mystery. Everything points to it being a Dragon, but we won't know for sure until it hatches. I've been keeping it warm and taking care of it, though. It should be close now." He gently ran his fingers along the surface of the egg, feeling a faint warmth coming from within.
James, who had been idly twirling his Pokéball, glanced over. "It's got to be a special Pokémon if it's taking this long to hatch. Do you think Clair knows what's inside?"
Jessie crossed her arms, a slight smirk playing on her lips. "I bet Clair would just tell him to leave it alone until tomorrow. Typical Gym Leader behavior—always keeping things mysterious."
Haru couldn't help but chuckle at Jessie's comment. "Yeah, well... I suppose we'll have to wait a little longer. But tomorrow should be interesting. I'll finally get that last badge, and maybe we'll get some answers about the egg too."
They sat there for a while in a comfortable silence, the only sound being the occasional beeping from the Pokémon Center's machines. Haru glanced over at the egg once more, feeling a strange sense of anticipation building inside him. The egg had been with them for so long, and he could feel that it was on the verge of something important.
Suddenly, the egg twitched slightly. Haru froze, his heart skipping a beat. The group noticed immediately, their eyes wide with excitement.
"Did you see that?!" Casey exclaimed, leaning in closer to the egg.
James looked at Haru, a bit of concern in his voice. "Is it... is it time?"
Haru gently cradled the egg in his hands, feeling it move a little more. "I think it is. Get ready, everyone. This could be it!"
The group watched in awe as the egg began to crack slightly. The tiny fissures grew larger as the Pokémon inside seemed to be pushing its way out. Haru felt a rush of excitement and anxiety—he had been waiting for this moment for so long, and now it was finally happening.
As the final crack formed in the egg, the group leaned in closer, anticipation thick in the air. The egg split open completely, revealing a small, shimmering Pokémon curled up inside. Its body glowed with a faint, golden hue—this wasn't just any Dragon-type.
A shiny Gible.
The little Gible let out a small, surprised chirp as it blinked its bright eyes, adjusting to the world outside the egg. The first thing it saw was Haru, who looked at it in awe. His heart skipped a beat at the sight of the shiny Gible's sparkling blue scales and the gentle glow it radiated.
"Wow..." Haru whispered, his voice full of wonder. "You're... you're a shiny Gible."
The Gible, seemingly recognizing Haru as the first person it saw, chirped again, stumbling slightly as it stood up on its tiny legs. It reached out toward Haru, who gently placed his hand down to offer it support.
Casey couldn't contain her excitement. "It's so adorable! And it's shiny! You're so lucky, Haru!"
James looked at the little Dragon-type with a grin. "That's a rare one! A shiny Gible is a huge find. Looks like your luck's turning around."
Jessie crossed her arms with a smirk, but even she couldn't hide the glint of admiration in her eyes. "Not bad. A Dragon-type and a shiny one at that. You've got yourself a powerhouse, Haru."
Haru couldn't help but smile as the Gible clumsily made its way over to him, its small feet pattering against the floor. He bent down and gently picked it up, holding it in his arms. "You're going to be amazing," he murmured, looking into the Gible's bright, curious eyes.
The little Gible chirped happily and nuzzled against Haru's chest, clearly trusting him already. Haru felt a deep sense of warmth and connection with the Pokémon—it was as if the Gible had always been meant to be part of his team.
"This is it," Haru said softly, as he stood up, holding the Gible carefully. "We've got a Dragon-type now, and a shiny one at that. This will be a big help on our journey."
Casey grinned. "Looks like you've got a new partner to train! Let's get this little one ready for whatever's next."
James nodded. "For sure. It's going to be a tough road ahead, but with a shiny Gible by your side, you've got an edge."
Jessie raised an eyebrow. "I just hope you're ready for the chaos that comes with having a Dragon on your team. It's not all sunshine and rainbows."
Haru laughed softly, looking down at the Gible in his arms. "I think we're ready. This little one's going to grow up to be strong, and we'll face whatever comes together."
With a sense of newfound excitement and determination, the group prepared to rest for the night, knowing that tomorrow would bring another challenge. Haru's team was growing stronger, and with the shiny Gible joining them, they were one step closer to achieving their goals.
As Haru released all his Pokémon from their Poké Balls, the group watched in awe as his team appeared before them.
Swampert, Electivire, Scizor, Houndoom, and Gyarados all materialized in a flash of light, and the sheer size of Gyarados immediately caused a ripple of surprise. The towering sea serpent crashed against the rooftop of the Pokémon Center, causing the entire structure to shake, and parts of the roof cracked, dust falling from above.
Haru's team, all majestic in their own way, seemed to stand proudly, yet Gyarados, even with its intimidating size, didn't appear to be bothered by the destruction it caused.
"Oops," Haru muttered, scratching the back of his head, watching the wreckage with a sheepish grin.
Meowth, the ever-hungry member of the group, stood in front of Haru and tapped his foot impatiently. "Hey, boss, it's food time! I'm starving here!"
Haru chuckled, looking at the eager Pokémon. "Not yet, Meowth. We've got a new team member that deserves some attention first."
With that, Haru motioned to the little Gible that was still in his arms. The Pokémon was chirping happily, its eyes wide as it took in the sight of the powerful Pokémon that Haru already had on his team. It was obvious that Gible was excited to be a part of such a strong group.
"Alright, everyone," Haru said, looking at his team with pride. "This little guy is our newest addition. Meet Gible, the Dragon-type that hatched from the egg we got. Isn't he just adorable?"
Swampert gave a friendly wave of his fin, and Electivire raised an arm, giving a thumbs-up. Meowth, as expected, approached the Gible and gave it a playful nudge, though it quickly retreated after a small glare from Scizor, who stood protectively nearby.
Scizor let out a soft click, offering the Gible a silent but welcoming gesture. Houndoom gave a playful growl, wagging his tail, as if to show Gible that he'd be a reliable ally. Gyarados, despite its intimidating size, gave the Gible a curious glance, perhaps wondering how it would fit into the team.
Casey laughed as she watched the interactions. "It's amazing how you've got such a well-rounded team. Each of them has their own way of greeting the new guy."
James grinned. "They're all so different, but they work together so well."
Jessie looked down at the Gible and then up at Haru, raising an eyebrow. "So, what's your plan with him? You think he's ready for a battle?"
Haru smiled, gently placing Gible on the ground so it could stretch its legs. "Not yet, but I'll train him alongside the others. Gible's going to be strong, just like the rest of you."
Meowth, still looking eager for food, started pacing around Haru's legs. "You promised food after the introductions, right?"
Haru laughed and pulled out a bag of Pokémon food. "Alright, alright, food time for everyone. Gible, welcome to the team."
As the group began feeding their Pokémon, Haru couldn't help but feel a strong sense of pride. His team had grown so much, and with Gible now a part of it, they were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
Meanwhile, Gible, still a bit shy, took small steps toward the food, its eyes shining with excitement. It was clear that it had found a place in Haru's team, and Haru was more than ready to help it grow and reach its full potential.
