"Gogoat, Vine Whip."
Just as Neron was trembling, a familiar voice sounded softly in his ear. He was startled for a moment, then, as if grasping a lifeline, he looked up and forward. In the next second, his eyes widened, his mouth opened, and he said in shock, "Brother Bruce!"
Right in front of him was his roommate, Bruce, who had declined to team up with him, now riding on a Gogoat and calmly gazing at him with a torch-like stare. Beside him, a Combusken stood anxiously, its hawk-sharp eyes making it hard to ignore.
In an instant, the horns on Gogoat's head glowed faintly, and two Vine Whips slithered like green snakes, striking toward the Ursaring and wrapping around it from left to right.
"ROAR!"
Ursaring, bound by the Vine Whip, roared in rage, his eyes flashing fiercely as his anger surged.
"Let's go!" Bruce reminded him.
"Oh, oh, oh!" Neron snapped out of it, nodding repeatedly. Seizing the opportunity while Ursaring was immobilized, he ran quickly toward Bruce, with Gastly following.
[Pokemon: Ursaring (Normal)
Ability: Scud
Qualification: Master
Level: Lv38 (Professional)]
At level 38, this Ursaring was truly a totem of the Oz Secret Realm. Neron's luck at encountering such a high-level Ursaring was undeniable.
Standing next to the towering Gogoat, Neron finally felt calm. He let out a deep breath, and thoughts filled his mind.
"This Gogoat is absolutely at the Professional level."
"Damn it, does that mean Bruce, the number one ranked student, is…"
Thinking this, Neron's eyes narrowed, a wave of realization dawning on him.
The truth was evident: Bruce was in the Professional-level Pokemon area, and if there was a Professional-level Gogoat under his command, who else could he be but the fierce guy who held the top rank?
"Ridiculous, you're also a research student—why are you this strong?" Neron muttered inwardly.
He'd thought being a research student and making it into the top 50 was amazing. Now, compared to Bruce in front of him, it was like comparing a Tail Glow to the moon itself.
As these thoughts swirled, Ursaring used its arms to tear free of the Vine Whip's grip, turning to glare at Bruce with ferocity.
"ROAR!"
The terrifying roar reverberated through the air, and Ursaring charged at Bruce with unstoppable force.
"Flamethrower," Bruce commanded coolly.
"Combusken!"
Combusken stepped forward, its orange eyes flashing. Opening its beak, a fierce column of flames erupted, striking Ursaring directly.
Seeing this, Ursaring stomped on the ground heavily, creating a shockwave as rocks floated up to shield it.
BOOM!
The Flamethrower consumed the massive rock, and the intense airwave danced around it. Flames licked past both sides of the rock, surging forward. Slowly, the flames died down, leaving the air thick with the smell of charred earth. Ursaring, standing tall, suddenly accelerated and charged toward Combusken.
"Combusken!"
Unfazed, Combusken met Ursaring head-on.
Though a significant gap in levels separated Combusken from Ursaring, the training and development Combusken had undergone compensated for it entirely—and perhaps even exceeded it!
BANG!
Ursaring swung its paw, the air whistling as Combusken's claws slashed back, each move filled with fierce resolve.
To Neron's shock, Ursaring let out a roar and staggered backward, blood oozing from deep gashes on its waist and shoulders. Watching, Neron swallowed involuntarily, his blood racing, adrenaline soaring.
"Who on earth is my roommate?"
"This Combusken is a true powerhouse—a dimensional reduction of skill!"
"Didn't think being a Trainer was too easy, so he joined the Research Department," Neron thought with a grin.
In the field, Ursaring saw the blood on its body and let out an enraged, ear-splitting roar, startling a group of nearby Pidgey, who scattered.
Combusken adjusted its breathing and calmly watched Ursaring's angry display. He'd seen this countless times before.
As Bruce had taught him: "Anger can fuel power in battle, but it also erodes control and calmness. Those are the keys to victory."
BOOM!
With heavy steps, Ursaring charged again. In an instant, it was upon Combusken, fist raised with a fierce white glow.
"Substitute," Bruce ordered just in time.
With a savage look in its eyes, Ursaring's powerful fists struck the decoy Combusken, deflating it like a balloon. The real Combusken circled behind, hands glowing with energy before slicing into Ursaring with Brick Break.
Unsteady, Ursaring staggered forward and crashed to the ground in a cloud of dust.
After a moment, Ursaring struggled to its feet, wiping blood from its mouth, and glared at Combusken with cold, calculating eyes.
Meanwhile, in the university's observation room, a man with glasses pushed them up, trying to hide his surprise. "I remember this Ursaring—it's supposed to be the strongest Pokemon in the Oz Secret Realm, right?"
"Pretty much," Rasmus nodded.
"Interesting," mused another student. "This Ursaring is known for having chased a Major ten kilometers once; nobody dares to cross its path."
Rasmus crossed his arms, remarking, "It's useless, though. Against Combusken, everything else falls short."
"If Combusken keeps going like this, what happens when it evolves into Blaziken?" the man with glasses murmured.
At the same time, Ursaring opened its bloody mouth, charging a powerful orange glow, summoning the deadly Hyper Beam.
Seeing this, Bruce ordered swiftly: "Flare Charge."
"Combusken!"
Flames enveloped Combusken as it shot forward, speed increasing dramatically. Ursaring had just finished preparing Hyper Beam when a red blur struck its abdomen.
BOOM!
Ursaring flew backward, while the Hyper Beam missed, ripping through nearby trees.
At last, Ursaring collapsed, unable to continue.
Neron's expression shifted as he watched. "Incredible," he whispered.
Bruce patted Gogoat, then jumped down, approaching Neron.
"Are you okay?" Bruce called out.
Neron shook his head, then looked at Bruce, eyes alight. "Brother Bruce, are you really the number one?"
Bruce met Neron's expectant gaze and nodded.
With that, Neron's eyes lit up in awe. He glanced at Gogoat and Combusken, sighing, "Brother Bruce, with two Professional-level Pokemon, how are other students supposed to compete?"
"Just one," Bruce corrected.
"Wait, what?"
Bruce explained Gogoat's temporary role as a mount. After hearing, Neron sighed, marveling at Bruce's uncanny skill.
"By the way, what will you do next? Want to stay here?" Bruce asked.
Neron shook his head quickly. "Nope, I'll head back to the area suited for me."
As Neron turned to leave, he stopped. "Brother Bruce, does this number-one rank need to be kept secret?"
Bruce chuckled. "No need."
Turning to leave, Neron muttered, "Who exactly is my roommate…?"
Over an hour later, Neron exited the Professional-level Pokemon area, reaching the upper-level area.
"Not staying here long," he muttered.
Then, he spotted a familiar figure—Bin, commanding a Gabite in battle with a Luxio. After a solid hit, Luxio was down.
"Brother Bin, look who's here!" Neron called.
Bin glanced over, smiling, "So it's you, kid. Gastly's at upper level?"
Neron laughed. "It will be soon."
He looked at Gabite, exclaiming, "Brother Bin, Gible evolved already?"
Bin nodded, saying, "It evolved this morning."
"Congratulations," Neron grinned. "You're truly unstoppable now."
Unexpectedly, Bin shook his head with a serious look. "There's always someone stronger."
"What's with the deep talk?" Neron asked with a grin.
Bin hesitated before saying, "You've checked the rankings?"
Neron nodded. "You've always been top three."
Bin's expression turned complicated. "I always thought I could secure first place."
Pausing, he added, "The current number one, Bruce Bayne, I've never heard of him."
"Maybe he's from somewhere else," Neron said with a knowing smile.
"Maybe." Bin looked thoughtful, adding, "Either way, his lead suggests he has a Professional-level Pokemon."
Neron hid a smile. "If you want to meet him, I can introduce you."
"Oh?" Bin raised an eyebrow.
"Brother Bin, I know Bruce."
"What department is he in?" Bin asked with narrowed eyes.
"Department of Research, Class 1," Neron replied earnestly.
Bin: "?"
