Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Battling Gligar
Upon entering the gym, one immediately noticed a vast battlefield, significantly larger than that of Kana City Gym's arena. On both sides of the field were rows of spectator seats, currently filled with numerous onlookers.
Although Falcon City wasn't considered a bustling metropolis, as the strongest red-star Gym, it attracted many Trainers who frequently visited to challenge the gym.
Among these spectators were some gym trainees, including Aaron.
Lian looked up and saw the blue sky directly above the battlefield, giving an impression of immense openness.
At that moment, Gym Leader Kas was engaged in a Pokemon battle against a Trainer with a buzzcut hairstyle. The Gym Leader's Fearow seemed particularly fond of soaring high before swiftly diving down, utilizing its sharp and elongated beak for attacks.
The Trainer's Sandslash struggled under Fearow's relentless onslaught, clearly outmatched and quickly running low on stamina.
"That Fearow is incredibly strong!" Kalia frowned slightly, realizing she had underestimated the Flying Type Gym's prowess. This Fearow exceeded her expectations in terms of strength.
Both its speed and attack intensity were formidable; even Sandslash, known for high defense, couldn't mount any effective counterattacks.
However, having decided to challenge the gym, Kalia couldn't back down now; she had faced defeats before and wasn't one to wait until her Pokemon were perfectly prepared for every challenge.
Moreover, it wasn't entirely hopeless. Her Charmeleon possessed Hidden Power (Rock) moveset, which could effectively counter flying types, making this battle still winnable.
The opposing Trainer's skills were commendable, but clearly, Gym Leader Kas held superior mastery. Sandslash, with its impressive Ground-type defense, lacked effective moves against Fearow, putting it at a significant disadvantage.
After an intense battle, Sandslash finally collapsed due to exhaustion. However, Fearow also appeared quite battered, having sustained multiple hits from Sandslash's Crush Claw attacks.
"I lost." The Trainer admitted bitterly, thinking that after Sandshrew's evolution, they should have been strong enough to challenge the Flying Type Gym, yet still emerged defeated.
Kas maintained his gentle smile as he approached the Trainer and said, "Your Sandslash is quite good, though it seems to have just evolved recently. I can tell its proficiency with Crush Claw isn't fully developed yet. Consider more training for some time."
"Thank you, Gym Leader." Nodding, the Trainer recalled Sandslash and turned to leave the gym.
Seeing the battle conclude, Kalia approached and said, "Gym Leader, I'd like to challenge you."
Kas nodded, responding, "Let me first restore Fearow's stamina and heal its injuries."
Kalia stood by as Kas retrieved some high-quality Potions, spraying them on Fearow's wounds to begin its recovery process.
After patiently waiting for a moment, Fearow regained its composure, flapped its wings, soared into the air, and let out joyful cries.
"Rest inside your Poké Ball for now; I'll call upon you later." Since Fearow had just recovered from its injuries, Kas decided not to immediately send it back into battle and instead recalled the Pokémon.
With Fearow returned, Kas took out another Poké Ball, moved to the opposite side of the battlefield, and asked, "Are you ready?"
"Yes," Kalia nodded, then turned to her Charmeleon and commanded, "Charmeleon, take the field."
Facing flying type Pokémon, Grovyle would be at a significant disadvantage, so Kalia clearly wouldn't start with it.
The gym featured a dedicated referee, who observed both Trainers being prepared and skillfully blew a loud whistle sound.
"Please send out your starting Pokémon."
Lian stepped onto the battlefield and looked at Gym Leader Kas, who gently tossed his Poké Ball. As it opened, a Pokemon emerged - unmistakably one of Kas's Pokémon, Gligar.
The purple Gligar flapped its wings, hovering in mid-air with large pincers at the wingtips and a venomous scorpion tail.
Seeing this Gligar, Kalia realized that Charmeleon's Hidden Power (Rock) advantage would not apply here. Fortunately, while Gligar had excellent defense, its resistance to Special moves was relatively low.
As Gligar possessed Ground Type attributes, Kalia wasn't certain if this particular Gligar knew any Ground-type moves. Typically, Gligars cannot naturally learn Ground-type attacks; they require Move Disks for gradual mastery.
After sending out her Pokémon, Kalia swiftly issued her command. Currently, Dragon Rage was Charmeleon's most reliable move, boasting high damage and bypassing defenses effectively.
"Charmeleon, use Dragon Rage."
"Gligar, use Knock Off!" Kas countered promptly, employing the Dark-type move Knock Off. His keen observation skills were evident, as he noticed the Charcoal accessory on Lian's chest, which served as a stat boost enhancer.
The Knock Off move could forcibly dislodge any item carried by the opponent's Pokemon, potentially causing higher damage.
Hearing Kas' command, Lian's expression changed, surprised by Kas' keen observation skills. In an instant, Kas noticed the Charcoal and swiftly devised the optimal attack strategy.
In the game, if Knock Off hits a Pokemon carrying an item, it deals double damage. Although not doubling the harm in reality, Knock Off is inherently powerful. With its enhanced strength, not only would the Charcoal be knocked off, but Lian himself might sustain serious injuries.
As Lian contemplated how to evade Gligar's Knock Off move, he simultaneously unleashed Dragon Rage, sending intense shockwaves towards the airborne Gligar.
"Gligar, try to dodge," Kas warned promptly. Facing Dragon Rage, he couldn't afford for Gligar to take a direct hit; moves that bypass defenses pose significant threats to underdeveloped Pokémon.
Gligar maneuvered continuously in mid-air, displaying practiced evasion skills. Though not exceptionally fast, it exhibited remarkable agility, successfully evading the range of the shockwaves.
Lian was somewhat surprised to see Gligar evade Dragon Rage, confirming that Gym Leaders' Pokemon indeed possessed exceptional strength. He needed to be even more cautious in this battle.
After dodging the attack, Gligar swiftly charged towards Lian, its pincers at the wingtips gathering energy, enveloped in white light, ready to unleash Knock Off.
"Charmeleon, dodge." Kalia felt the mounting pressure as she realized the Gym Leader's Gligar was no weaker than her Fearow. Now, all she could hope for was Charmeleon's ability to avoid Gligar's assault.
"Let's test our burst speed," Lian thought, focusing intently on Gligar's approach. He aimed to utilize his explosive speed to evade Gligar's Knock Off move.
Over the past few days, Lian had gained a better understanding of Explosive Power. Besides enabling swift attacks, it also allowed for sudden bursts of acceleration during critical moments, causing opponents to misjudge and thus evading various moves effectively.
As Gligar dove from the sky, Lian surged forward, dramatically increasing his speed. With the boost from Explosive Power, his velocity momentarily approached 800 ability points.
The giant pincers only managed to strike air. Neither Gligar nor Kas anticipated Lian's sudden burst of speed, much to their surprise.
Lian successfully widened the gap and evaded Gligar's Knock Off move, boosting his confidence significantly as he now felt highly motivated.
"Gligar, use Acrobatics." Surprised by the ineffectiveness of Knock Off, Kas promptly changed tactics.
Kalia quickly followed with her command, "Charmeleon, continue using Dragon Rage."
Despite missing earlier, Dragon Rage remained the most effective move. Although Swift could hit Gligar, its impact would be minimal.
While Lian preferred Dragon Breath, it was understandable that Kalia wasn't aware of its enhanced effects yet.
This time, Lian wouldn't make the same mistake. If launching Dragon Rage from a distance failed to land a hit, he'd simply get closer before using it.
Gligar soared high into the sky, utilizing the powerful Acrobatics move. Without any held items, the potency of Acrobatics increased significantly.
Since Acrobatics is also a close-range contact move, Lian refrained from immediately using Dragon Rage. He waited for Gligar to approach, ensuring it couldn't evade again.
