Perkatory: Coffee and Zombies

Chapter 6: A Perilous Brew

Zoe's heart pounded as Emma tightened the straps of the two backpacks she had borrowed from her friends and slung Pearson's old leather briefcase across her chest. The air inside Perkatory was thick with tension, every creak of the floorboards and groan from the barricades amplifying the weight of the moment.

"Are you sure you're ready for this?" Zoe asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. She was gripping the counter so hard her knuckles turned white.

Emma nodded, determination hardening her features. "I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Just tell me what to do."

Zoe placed the shimmering mug of Speed Brew in Emma's hands. The drink's faint glow illuminated her anxious face. "Drink this, all of it. Once you're out there, stick to the plan. Get to the convenience store, grab as much as you can, and get back here. Darren and Pearson will be ready to pull you through the drive-thru window." She took a deep breath. "We're counting on you."

Emma gave a thin smile. "No pressure, right?" She downed the drink in one gulp, her eyes widening as the effects hit her.

Zoe could almost feel the change as Emma's body adjusted to the brew. Her movements became jittery, her breath quickening as a burst of energy seemed to ripple through her.

"Whoa," Emma said, stumbling slightly. "It's like… my body's on fast-forward."

The Brewmaster System chimed in Zoe's head, as chatty and irreverent as ever.

"Classic rookie mistake," it quipped. "She'll need a moment to calibrate. Don't worry; the first few stumbles are just part of the fun."

"Fun isn't exactly what I'd call this," Zoe muttered under her breath.

"You're right; it's more of a high-stakes, death-defying thrill ride. You should be proud."

Emma took a few shaky steps, her movements jerky as she adjusted to her newfound speed. Darren and Pearson stood by the drive-thru window, the metal shutter half-open, watching her with worried eyes.

"Alright," Emma said, her voice steadier now. "I've got this."

She climbed onto the counter and crouched at the window. Zoe's pulse quickened as she watched Emma grip the edge of the frame, her body coiled like a spring.

"Go when you're ready," Darren said, his tone calm but firm.

Emma nodded once, then launched herself through the window. Zoe held her breath as Emma hit the ground running, her form a blur as she darted toward the chaotic street. The zombies closest to Perkatory didn't react immediately, their sluggish movements too slow to register her rapid approach.

"And she's off!" the Brewmaster System announced in Zoe's mind. "Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets on whether she'll make it past the first corner or trip over her own feet. Either way, it'll be a spectacle."

"Will you shut up?" Zoe hissed under her breath, her eyes glued to Emma's figure.

The world seemed too slow as Emma weaved through the horde. Her speed was astonishing, and the brew worked flawlessly. But just as Zoe began to feel a sliver of hope, Emma overshot the convenience store's entrance by twenty feet, nearly crashing into a rusted dumpster behind it.

"And there's our first misstep!" The system crowed. "Points for effort, though. That dumpster really needed some company."

"Focus, Zoe," she muttered, forcing herself to keep her gaze steady. Emma doubled back, her movements more controlled as she adjusted to her enhanced abilities. She reached the convenience store door and shoved it open with such force that it smacked against the wall inside.

Once Emma was inside, Zoe grabbed the mug of Imbued Elixir she'd prepared earlier and sipped. The world shifted instantly, her senses sharpening as the system's power took hold. She could see Emma inside the store, the glow of her speed illuminating the dim aisles like a comet.

Emma shoved a shelf against the door to block any undead that might have followed her. For a moment, she leaned against it, catching her breath. Then she began moving through the store, her hands a blur as she grabbed supplies: water bottles, canned goods, medical kits.

"Smart move," the system commented. "But let's see if she remembers the essentials. Spoiler alert: coffee beans."

Emma paused in front of a shelf lined with coffee bags as if on cue. She hesitated, then began filling her backpack with them, whispering under her breath, "Zoe will need this at some point soon."

Zoe's chest tightened. The weight of responsibility pressed down on her, heavier than ever. Emma was risking her life for all of them, and the thought filled her with gratitude and dread.

"Alright, hero," the system said, its tone surprisingly soft. "Time to wrap it up. The undead aren't known for their patience."

Emma zipped up the backpacks and slung them over her shoulders. She pushed the shelf aside and peeked through the door. The zombies outside had begun to congregate, their groans growing louder.

"Here we go," Zoe whispered, her heart racing.

Emma burst through the door, her speed propelling her like a missile. She shoved zombies aside with sheer momentum, their bodies stumbling and collapsing in her wake. One lurched toward her, teeth bared, but she slapped it away with a force that sent it careening into a wall.

"Now that's what I call a slapshot," the system quipped. "Impressive technique."

Zoe barely heard it. She held her breath, her hands gripping the counter as she watched Emma race back toward Perkatory. Darren and Pearson were at the drive-thru window, their eyes wide as they tracked her approach.

"Almost there," Darren muttered, his hands outstretched.

Emma reached the window and leaped, her enhanced speed carrying her straight through the opening. Darren and Pearson caught her and pulled her inside just as the first zombie slammed against the barricade.

Darren yanked the metal shutter down and locked it in place. The group collapsed in a heap on the floor, gasping for air.

"She made it," Zoe whispered, relief washing over her like a tidal wave. She set down the Imbued Elixir, her hands trembling.

Emma's friend, Lisa, the other college student, burst into tears, throwing her arms around Emma. "I thought you were going to die!" she sobbed.

Emma hugged her back, her tears glistening in her eyes. "I'm okay," she said, her voice thick with emotion.

The room was silent except for the sound of labored breathing and the faint groans of zombies outside. For a moment, the group simply sat together, the enormity of what had just happened sinking in.

"Well, the Brewmaster System said, breaking the silence in Zoe's mind, "that was exhilarating. High marks for execution, though I'd suggest fine-tuning the landing next time."

"You're impossible," Zoe muttered, a weary smile tugging at her lips.

"Impossible? Hardly. I'm just here to keep things interesting. Now, what's next on the agenda? Saving the world, one cup at a time?"

Zoe glanced at Emma, who was still holding her sobbing friend, and at the rest of the group, who were slowly regaining their composure. She didn't have all the answers, but one thing was certain: they'd made it through this challenge together.

"One step at a time," she said quietly. The words meant as much for herself as for the system.

"That's the spirit, it replied. But don't get too comfortable. The grind never stops, Carter. The grind never stops."
