Chapter 13: Chapter 13 - Camp Half-Blood
The Half-Blood camp was located on the northern coast of Long Island; Montauk, the part of the beach where he was, was completely invisible to people without any mystical connection.
The sunlight flooded the Half-Blood camp, dispersing some of the mists and darkness that covered it, making the whole scene spectacularly beautiful.
Ikki, who had his hands resting on the half-closed railing, looked at everything, amazed.
In front of him, there were small woods, a winding stream, strawberry fields scattered beneath the blue sky. The valley was surrounded by rolling hills, and the tallest one, right in front of the infirmary, was the one with the great pine tree at the top.
Even this seemed beautiful in the sunlight.
After looking at the scene in front of him, he walked around the balcony. On the other side of the house, the valley extended all the way to the water, which shimmered about a kilometer away.
Between the house and there, Ikki was even more surprised. Everything he was seeing in front of him could only be described as fantastical.
The landscape was dotted with buildings that resembled ancient Greek architecture — an open-air pavilion, an amphitheater, a circular arena — but they seemed brand new, the white marble columns gleaming in the sun. On a nearby sand court, a dozen kids and satyrs were playing volleyball. Canoes glided across a small lake.
Kids in light orange shirts rushed around a cluster of cabins in the woods. Some were practicing archery on targets. Others were riding horses along a wooded trail, and some of them had wings.
"Pegasus? Wow, this is amazing! I never imagined the camp would be so magical," Ikki thought with sparkling eyes.
A cool breeze blew through his black hair, and the morning silence made him lost in thoughts about what had happened the night before. Someone he considered important in his life had died...
His eyes welled up just thinking about it, his heart felt heavy. With some effort, he pushed the subject of his best friend's mother's death to the back of his mind; forgetting was far better than blaming himself and being depressed.
The only thing that tore him apart just thinking about it was Percy's reaction to knowing that he had probably become an orphan... His heart fluttered with discomfort and guilt, but just like all his thoughts about it, he suppressed those feelings and focused on the present.
"And even if she died, if I'm strong enough, it's not impossible to bring her back to life. I just need to explore the 'source'..." Ikki murmured to himself, this hope was something. It helped him keep his logic in check against his emotions.
He took a deep breath and looked at the landscape in front of him. Chiron had said he would send someone to show him around the camp; by now, that person should be on their way, right? Looking around, his eyes locked onto a girl coming toward him.
The girl appeared to be about thirteen or fourteen years old. Her perfect features resembled a masterpiece painting; finely shaped eyebrows arched perfectly around her bright crescent-shaped blue eyes. Her small, charming red lips accentuated her seductive face. She wore a short pair of shorts and an orange shirt of the same kind Ikki had seen other campers wearing. Her style highlighted her developing curves beautifully.
As he assessed the girl, she did the same to him. She looked at him with sparkling eyes, a flush appearing on her cheeks. With his senses, he could hear her heartbeats quicken.
When she approached, she stopped in front of him and shyly asked.
"Hello, you must be Ikki, right?" Then she introduced herself and stated her purpose: "I'm Silena Beauregard... Chiron sent me to show you around the camp."
Silena was holding a clipboard in her arms, a sort of board used for placing papers on; it had a list of things to check. That's what Ikki could notice with a quick glance.
"So, you're going to be my guide? Silena, right?" Ikki stepped off the balcony and stopped in front of the girl, who was staring at him as though watching the most beautiful scene and didn't want to look away.
He noticed this but didn't comment on it. He simply extended his hand for a handshake, which she automatically responded to, saying.
"It's a pleasure to meet you! I hope we can become good friends..."
"I feel the same..."
Silena, who felt her heart nearly leap out of her chest when she shook the perfect boy's hand, spoke... The warm feeling of safety and comfort that his hand conveyed was surreal. She felt her entire heart warm up, and her body relaxed in his presence.
A small blush appeared on her cheeks.
"Shall we go?"
When they released their hands, ignoring the feeling of loss in her heart, Silena asked, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear shyly.
"Sure..." Ikki said, finding it cute, before heading to explore his new home for the summer. He took a glance at the house behind him and was a little surprised to see that it was larger than he had initially thought. The house had four floors, sky-blue with white finishes, like a first-class seaside resort hotel.
His mind had been so full of thoughts yesterday that he hadn't even properly looked at the entire camp. If he had done so, it would have been easy for him to see through the darkness with his supernatural vision.
He was checking the brass weather vane shaped like an eagle on the roof when something caught his attention—a shadow in the highest window of the attic. Something had moved in the curtain for just a second, and he got the distinct impression that he was being watched.
"Did something catch your attention?" Silena asked curiously, stopping in her tracks.
"Actually, no. Yesterday, I didn't have the chance to take a good look at the house. I was just a bit surprised by its size." Ikki answered, glancing one last time toward the attic before pulling his gaze away and continuing to walk back.
The two walked side by side, with Silena doing a great job as a guide. She also asked several questions to get to know him better. During their conversation, they passed by the volleyball court where several campers—mostly teenagers—were playing, and also passed the strawberry fields, where campers were picking bushels of strawberries while a satyr played a tune on a bamboo flute.
Silena told him that the camp grew a beautiful crop for export to restaurants in New York and Mount Olympus. And that it was one of their incomes to cover expenses, and the strawberries hardly required any effort.
She mentioned that one of the camp directors had this effect on fruit-bearing plants: they simply went crazy when he was around. It worked best with the vines, but Mr. D was forbidden from growing them, so instead, they grew strawberries.
The girl made a point of introducing every place and explaining its function. Despite having a huge temptation in front of her, she was serious about her work. But she kept her eyes glued to Ikki, smiling every time they talked, like a little girl in love...
As the two continued their walk, several campers who noticed them stood frozen...
"How beautiful..." Many campers murmured in a trance.
Regardless of gender, they were all enchanted by the new camper; could someone so handsome exist in this world?
He was like the only flame in a completely dark and silent place. Everyone was drawn to him like moths. His appearance was so powerful that even a straight guy might question his own sexuality. A woman would be helpless and wait for him until her hair turned white.
Some of these male campers even "discovered" that they swung the other way.
As for the girls... well, their minds were a dangerous minefield, so better left unexplored—the daughters of the Goddess of Love could barely keep themselves from attacking the perfect specimen of a man in front of their eyes and taking him to a room where they'd do all kinds of crazy things.
Unaware of the chaos he caused, Ikki continued his journey through the place where he would stay for the summer. He was still not in a good mood about everything that had happened the night before... So, he didn't even bother to manipulate his presence and make himself "normal," and part of him was already tired of hiding his appearance to avoid confusion. He felt he could be himself at the Half-Blood camp...
The journey continued, and he explored the woods during it.
A forest larger than large; enormous, taking up a quarter of the valley, with trees so tall and wide that it seemed no one had entered since the Native Americans. Silena explained about provisions and the game Capture the Flag that took place every Friday at the camp.
The game's setting was the forest, where the monsters were located and hidden. Although it was very dangerous, it was beneficial for the demigods, as it trained them for real-world life, where they had to fight monsters.
Two teams were formed, and each team received a flag. On each side of the forest, both teams hid their flags in a visible but easily defensible spot. To win for their team, they had to capture the enemy's flag and carry it across the river that divided the forest in half, acting as a border.
Ikki was a little interested in the game, remembering the part of the book that mentioned it, with several scenes depicting the event, but the details from the Goddess of Love were much better. Well, after all, the book was just a base for all the events in this world.
It was like a prophecy with more details of the events in this world, something used for entertainment in his past life.
After the woods, they arrived at the cabins where all the Demigods stayed.
There were twelve of them nestled in the woods by the lake. They were arranged in a U shape, two in front and five lined up on each side. And they were undoubtedly the strangest set of buildings anyone could see in their life. A normal person seeing them would definitely be a bit confused by their oddness.
Except for the fact that each had a large number of brass above the door—odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right—they were completely different from one another.
Number nine had chimneys like a tiny factory. Number four had tomato vines on the walls and a roof made of real grass. Number seven looked made of solid gold that shone so brightly in the sunlight that it was almost impossible to look at...
None were like the others.
All faced a common area about the size of a football field, dotted with Greek statues, fountains, flower beds, and a pair of basketball hoops.
In the center of the field was a large stone area with a bonfire. Even though it was a warm afternoon, the fire burned slowly. A girl about nine years old was tending to the flames, poking the coals with a stick.
Ikki looked at her and his eyes brightened. He knew who she was, one of the few deities who hadn't done anything wrong in the stories recorded in human civilization, the Goddess of the Hearth and Family; Hestia. She could be said to be his favorite goddess from Greek mythology.
The only one who didn't make him want to imitate what Kratos did to the Gods of Olympus in his favorite game from his past life.
Sensing his gaze, Hestia, who was tending to the campfire, turned and looked in his direction. Her eyes were like two warm honey-colored pearls, and they became bright when they looked at him, falling into the famous trance of a moth drawn to the flame.
Ikki found it amusing to see her reaction to his appearance. He waved at her, snapping her out of her stupor, and she waved back, smiling warmly before returning to tending to the fire. With that, he continued following Silena.
Although this encounter gave the impression it had lasted a long time, it occurred in the span of just a few breaths.
He followed Silena to the pair of Cabins at the head of the field, numbers one and two, which looked like matching mausoleums, large white marble boxes with heavy columns in front.
Cabin number one was the largest and most magnificent of the twelve. The polished bronze doors shimmered like a hologram, so much so that, viewed from different angles, beams seemed to pass through them.
Cabin number two was somewhat more graceful, with finer columns topped with pomegranates and flowers. The walls were carved with images of peacocks.
"Zeus and Hera?" Ikki said, guessing.
"Correct." Silena nodded with a beautiful smile adorning her lips and explained: "As you can see, both are kind of empty. The truth is, no one has ever stayed in one or two, at least it's been a long time since anyone did..."
"That's a surprise..?" Ikki said genuinely surprised: "Considering the mythology, shouldn't there be a lot of children of Zeus?"
This was something he never quite understood in the book, one of the few things that hadn't been faithful to the Greek myths.
"From that perspective, it's really surprising how few children of Zeus there are." Silena chuckled lightly, then explained: "But that's because the Big Three made a vow after the Second World War not to have any more children..."
Sure! Here's the translation of your text:
"This explains it..." Ikki said, humming slightly, before looking at the girl beside him and asking, "By the way, I hadn't asked you. But what is your divine heritage?"
"Wow, you're so formal in the way you speak." Silena looked at him with bright eyes before answering his question, "I am the daughter of the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite..."
"That explains your appearance." Ikki said, complimenting her unconsciously. To be honest, he didn't remember Silena being mentioned in the books, so he didn't really know which deity she was the daughter of; but her appearance gave him the idea that was now confirmed.
Silena turned red from his compliment, and her heart seemed to almost explode with happiness. Did he think she was beautiful? This thought caused chaos in her mind.
Ikki didn't notice the girl's turbulent state. He looked at the Cabins and tried to sense if he had any connection with any of them. In the book, his friend was able to feel something like that. So, it should be possible for a demigod. Unfortunately, after looking at each cabin, he felt nothing.
Could it be that his father didn't want him to discover his heritage and cut off his connection with his domain in the form of a cabin in this camp?
That was a huge possibility.
Or maybe he wasn't as special as his friend, who was the child of destiny in this world.
Well, sooner or later, he would find out about his mysterious father.
"Well, Miss Guide. What's our next stop?" Ikki asked Silena, after giving up on his idea of finding his father through some special connection with a cabin.
Silena snapped out of her stupor upon hearing his sudden question. She turned as red as a tomato and quickly turned her face away. Her heart was racing, but she quickly regained her composure as best she could and said, giving him a wink.
"Now we're going to my favorite place."
With large steps to hide her shyness, she headed towards where several campers were walking with winged horses.
Ikki was finding this girl more and more adorable. With a smile on his lips that stunned the campers around him even more, he followed her.
