Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Three Matters
From the conversation between her two brothers, Yingzi had already guessed the whole story. Without hesitation, she stood firmly on Jiang Kai's side and said anxiously, "Big Brother, you must get treated."
"If money isn't enough, I'll just stop going to school."
Jiang Kai shot Yingzi a glare. "Don't mess around. If you say that, Big Brother definitely won't agree. I already said I'll handle the money issue."
"Actually, I planned to earn enough for Big Brother's treatment before coming home. But... sigh, it's a long story. Anyway, I listened to a friend's advice and decided to come home first to take a look."
Jiang Lan was still worried and frowned. "Kai, how did you make so much money? Did you do something dangerous?"
"Big Brother, no danger involved." Jiang Kai explained patiently. "There's something I need to tell you, but you both must promise not to tell anyone."
"Huh? What is it?" Jiang Lan and Yingzi leaned forward curiously, staring at Jiang Kai.
"Before joining the Destiny Calling, I bought some incomplete materials in the back alleys, and then... I succeeded in job changing. I have a profession."
"Is that even possible?" Yingzi's eyes widened. "The internet says incomplete materials have a super low success rate. Even if you succeed, it wouldn't be a good profession."
Jiang Kai nodded. "At the time, I just wanted to take a gamble. After all, without a profession, it's hard to pass the newbie trial. But when I was doing the job change, I suddenly felt like... maybe incomplete materials don't actually have a low success rate. Maybe they require..."
"Require what?" Yingzi hurriedly asked.
"I'm not entirely sure. Maybe it's just my illusion... Anyway, I do have a profession. And it's even—"
Before Jiang Kai could finish his sentence, there was a knock on the door.
The three siblings turned toward the door in surprise, especially Jiang Kai.
Who could it be at this time?
The Huang family? That didn't seem likely. If it were them, they'd probably kick the door in rather than knock so politely.
"Is Jiang Kai here?" a voice called from outside. "It's Lu Jun."
"Who?" Jiang Lan looked at his brother, puzzled.
"Lu Jun... Oh, someone from the military," Jiang Kai said, exhaling a sigh of relief as he stood to open the door.
When he opened the door, Jiang Kai found not just Lu Jun but also Wei Ying, the man in black, and the female instructor—all four of them were standing outside, looking at him.
Jiang Kai frowned slightly. "General Wei, what brings you all here...?"
Lu Jun stepped back, and Wei Ying took a step forward, smiling warmly at Jiang Kai. He leaned his head slightly, peeking into the room. "Having a meal? Mind if we come in?"
Out of respect for Wei Ying, who had safeguarded Jiangzhong City's peace, Jiang Kai nodded. "Oh, please come in. Though, uh... the house is quite small."
"Haha, small but complete. My house is bigger, but it lacks the coziness of a home like yours."
Jiang Kai invited the four into the house. Seeing their military uniforms, Jiang Lan and Yingzi stood up in confusion, not knowing what to do.
Wei Ying chuckled and said, "You must be Jiang Kai's elder brother, Jiang Lan, and you're his younger sister, Jiang Ying, right? Sorry to interrupt your meal."
Jiang Lan tugged at Jiang Kai's sleeve. "Aren't you going to introduce them?"
"Oh, right. Big Brother, Third Sister, this is General Wei Ying of our Jiangzhong City Military District. This is Officer Lu Jun. That's... uh, the man in black. And this is our newbie trial instructor."
Jiang Kai was a bit awkward. He only knew Wei Ying's rank and title; as for the other three, he had no clue—especially the man in black, so he could only give a vague introduction.
However, just the mention of Wei Ying's identity was enough to shock Jiang Lan and Yingzi.
General Wei Ying—he was practically the guardian deity of Jiangzhong City.
"G-General Wei..." Jiang Lan stammered, dumbfounded.
Wei Ying waved a hand and said with a laugh, "No need to call me that. In private, just call me Old Wei."
Jiang Kai furrowed his brows slightly. He had already turned down the military's invitation before. Why were they here again? And acting so familiar at that.
"So, what brings you here?" Jiang Kai asked directly.
Wei Ying smiled faintly. "Jiang Kai, let's talk about that later. For now, look at this table of food and drinks..."
The general was here to mooch a meal? Jiang Kai's suspicions deepened.
Before he could respond, Jiang Lan hurriedly said, "Kai, Yingzi, pour the guests some drinks. The table's a bit small, though. It might be a tight fit..."
The man in black didn't seem to care. He grabbed a bottle of beer, flicked the cap off with his finger, and took a big swig. "No problem. You all sit. I'll just stand and eat." He reached for a roasted chicken wing on the table as he spoke.
Jiang Kai was speechless. This guy really acted like he owned the place.
Still, there was something about his laid-back attitude that Jiang Kai couldn't help but appreciate.
"General Wei, this setup is pretty simple. How about we all just stand and eat?" Jiang Kai suggested.
Wei Ying, showing his military straightforwardness, agreed readily. "As long as the vibe is right, anything works."
Yingzi handed out beers, and each of the four guests took one.
Raising his bottle, Wei Ying said, "First, let me congratulate Jiang Kai on passing the newbie trial. Cheers!"
"Come on, dig in," Jiang Lan urged. In his eyes, these people were guests, and guests deserved proper hospitality.
"Lan Lan," Wei Ying called, looking at the female instructor.
From the moment they entered, Su Lanlan had kept her head down, avoiding Jiang Kai's gaze.
Being called out now, she knew there was no escaping.
Taking a deep breath, Su Lanlan stepped forward and stared straight at Jiang Kai. Her eyes carried a sharpness that made Jiang Kai uneasy.
She walked right up to him, raised her bottle, and said, "Jiang Kai, a bet's a bet. I, Su Lanlan, mocked and belittled you before. That was my fault. I was narrow-minded and shortsighted. I formally apologize to you now."
"I'm sorry. I was wrong!"
"This bottle of beer is my apology." With that, she tilted her head back and downed the entire bottle.
Wei Ying chuckled, both amused and exasperated. "Lanlan, it wasn't that bad. You were just disappointed he didn't join the military. At most, you chose your words poorly."
Turning to Jiang Kai, he added, "She meant no harm. I hope you won't hold a grudge."
Jiang Kai was momentarily stunned but quickly smiled. "I don't take it to heart."
Wei Ying nodded in satisfaction. "Good. Now, as for why we're here..."
"There are three matters to discuss," Wei Ying continued. "First, fulfilling the terms of your bet with Lanlan."
"Second, we've learned about your brother Jiang Lan's condition. If you're willing, we can arrange for him to be treated at our military hospital. It's top-tier in terms of equipment, expertise, and specialists."
Jiang Kai hesitated, knowing this offer touched on a matter close to his heart.
Wei Ying added, "Don't worry. There are no strings attached. If one day you choose to join the military, it'll be because it's your choice, not because of a deal."
"What's the third matter?" Jiang Kai asked cautiously.
Wei Ying set his bottle down, his gaze turning serious. "The third matter is this: Jiang Kai, I need two days of your time."
"Two days? For what?"
"To come with me outside the city," Wei Ying said, his tone heavy with implication.
