Chapter 4: 04
Jack ties the bamboo containers together using the rope from the boat and hangs them securely from a tree. "I'm putting these here so we can carry them easily tomorrow," he says, glancing at Reed before adding, "Don't touch them."
Reed, feeling insulted, retorts, "Hey! If anything, you're the one that should stay put!" as he crosses his arms.
Jack smirks and replies, "Yeah, yeah," before glancing at the setting sun. "In any case, are you ready to leave this island?"
Reed nods, "Been ready since day one," before heading toward the tree they'd been sleeping under.
Jack lingers for a moment, watching the sun dip lower until the trees obscure it. He then approaches Reed, who is already resting, and casually says, "So, I'm planning on just stealing money when we find civilization."
Reed, who had been resting with his eyes closed, immediately opens them and fixes Jack with a stare.
Jack also stares at Reed for a while before hearing a sigh coming from him.
Reed says, "I mean, we already decided to be pirates," pausing before adding, "I want to be the one to do it."
Jack, baffled by Reed's boldness, asks, "Why?"
Reed quickly responds, "I want to get used to stealing. I know you're already used to it since, y'know, you've been stealing back then." He pauses, then adds, "So I wanna do it."
Jack raises an eyebrow, still processing Reed's determination. "You serious?"
Reed nods, leaning back against the tree. "Yeah. What's the point of being a pirate if I can't handle stuff like this myself?"
Jack nods in understanding. "Eventually, we're going to have to get used to killing as well."
Reed raises an eyebrow. "Technically, no," he says, pausing to think. "But I don't want to be vomiting and having an existential crisis when I see someone die." He reflects for a moment, then adds, "I guess we do need to get used to it."
He sighs, leaning his head back against the tree. "Life as a pirate isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows, huh?"
Jack shrugs. "Nope, but we chose this. Might as well embrace it."
Reed glances at Jack briefly, then shuts his eyes, his thoughts swirling. 'Embrace it, huh? I sure hope I can.'
Jack, noticing Reed's silence and closed eyes, stretches out on the ground, getting comfortable. "Better get some rest," he mutters to himself, preparing to sleep.
As the sun sets, the surroundings darken, and night envelops the island. Jack, already fast asleep, doesn't hear Reed quietly mutter to himself, "I wonder..."
----------
The next day, sunlight breaks through the trees, and Jack stirs awake first, stretching and glancing at Reed, still asleep under their usual tree.
Jack stands up, creating a rice ball in his hand. Suddenly, a rush of information floods his mind—details about his second 'move'.
He mutters to himself, "Finally unlocked it, huh? Took long enough. I've been using this ability daily just to feed both of us, and it still felt like forever."
He continues, "In the game, you had to defeat NPCs to gain experience... I wonder if it works the same here. Would killing people give me more experience?"
A dangerous glint flashes in his eyes before it quickly fades. Moving away from Reed, Jack activates his second move, Sticky Grain Trap. A pile of sticky rice suddenly spreads across the ground in a wide area, creating a trap-like field designed to slow down anything that steps into it.
"Annoying that it isn't an offensive type but could be useful," Jack mutters, staring at the sticky field.
Reed, woken by the commotion, notices the sticky rice covering the ground. Rubbing his eyes, he comments, "Wow! Is that your second move?"
Jack turns to Reed and nods before stepping away from the sticky rice field.
Reed joins him as they head toward the lake. "So, how are we going to do this?" Reed asks, glancing at Jack.
Jack, keeping his focus on the path ahead, replies, "We head to the edge of the island and buy a boat there. After that? We just sail and figure things out as we go."
Reed nods, taking a moment to drink from the lake. Once finished, he starts gathering the bamboo containers, and with Jack's help, they slowly make their way toward the edge of the island.
As they walk, Reed asks, "Why do we need to steal? Don't we get 1,500 every day as long as we survive in sustainable conditions?"
Jack responds, "Well, mainly because I just want to cause some trouble. And secondly, I don't think we can directly withdraw the money from the system. It's not like we can just hand over digital beli to someone."
Reed gives Jack an odd look but, after hearing the second point, nods in understanding. He thinks for a moment before deciding to test if they can withdraw system money once they reach the beach.
With the bamboo containers in hand, they continue their walk toward the beach in silence, focused on their task.
-------
At the beach, Jack and Reed securely tie the bamboo containers to a tree, ensuring none of the water spills.
Reed promptly claims the daily mission reward, gaining 1500 beli. Determined to test Jack's theory, he spends several minutes trying to withdraw beli from the system but ultimately fails, letting out a frustrated sigh.
Jack, resting near the ocean, glances at Reed and notices his sigh. "You just tried it, didn't you?" he comments.
Reed replies with a simple, "Yes."
Jack smirks, opens his system, claims his own 1500 beli, and then sends a request for 1500 from Reed. "Mind sharing?" he asks casually.
Reed accepts the request, transferring 1500 beli to Jack, and sees his own beli amount drop to 0. He sighs, now without any money but feeling a little more at ease with the transaction.
Reed [1500 » 0]
Jack [1500 » 3000]
"Thanks," Jack says casually while scrolling through the ships section of the shop.
"Yeah, yeah," Reed waves him off, then adds, "Just make sure to get a decent ship this time, something that won't sink halfway."
Jack smirks, "Don't worry, I'll pick something that'll actually get us off this island."
Jack scans through the available ships within the 2000-3000 beli range, carefully comparing their stats and descriptions. After a few moments, his eyes settle on a ship called [Brigade].
"This one looks decent," Jack mutters to himself before selecting it.
Reed, noticing Jack's expression, asks, "Found one?"
"Yeah," Jack replies, "it's called the Brigade. It's sturdy enough and should fit our needs."
"Good," Reed says with a nod. "Let's hope it doesn't end up stuck in another lake."
Jack chuckles, "Not this time."
Jack faces the ocean and purchases the **[Brigade]**. A moment later, the ship materializes in the water, this time near the shore where it is easily accessible.
The ship's helm is crafted from a lighter shade of wood, giving it a polished and elegant appearance. The [Brigade] is impressive for its price range, featuring a small enclosed room beneath the helm. Its overall design closely resembles a real-life barque, complete with three masts that tower high, making the vessel look more robust and capable than expected.
Reed steps closer to the water, inspecting the ship from a distance. "Huh, not bad at all. Definitely beats that tiny boat I bought."
Jack smirks. "Told you I'd get something decent."
Reed nods in approval. "Alright, let's get everything onboard and prepare to set sail."
------
As they step onto the deck with their bamboo containers secured, Jack takes a moment to check his remaining balance. His eye twitches in frustration when he sees it.
(Jack) [3000 » 200]
He exhales sharply, shaking his head. "I swear, this better be worth it."
Just then, he notices a new icon—a compass—has appeared next to his system buttons. Curious, he taps it and watches as a directional marker appears in his field of vision, pointing toward a specific location.
Jack, still focused on the compass, mutters, "It looks the same as in the game."
Reed, having just finished storing the bamboo containers in the small room, steps onto the deck and asks, "So, uh, how do we drive this ship? Wait, is 'drive' even the right word for it?"
Jack, standing at the helm, snickers. "Technically, it's 'sail,' but I'm fine with 'drive.' Makes us sound modern."
Reed raises an eyebrow. "Right… so do you actually know how to sail this thing?"
Jack casually answers, "No," before walking over to the steering wheel. As he approaches, his eyes catch a white square on the deck beneath the wheel.
Reed, noticing Jack's pause, raises an eyebrow. "What's up?"
Jack points to the square. "This. It's just like in the game when sailing a boat."
Without hesitation, he steps onto the tile. A faint glow emanates from it, and the ship's controls seem to come alive.
Reed watches with mild surprise. "Huh. So that's how it works?"
Suddenly, the sails drop, and the ship starts moving forward for a brief moment before the sails shoot back up, bringing the ship to a stop.
Reed, startled, looks at Jack. "Wait, so you can control all that?"
Jack nods with a smirk. "Yeah, it's pretty intuitive. Just thinking about it makes it happen."
Reed crosses his arms, impressed but slightly skeptical. "Convenient. Guess that's another system perk."
Jack shrugs nonchalantly. "Meh, are we ready to depart?"
Reed smirks and playfully responds, "Yeah, Captain Jack Sparrow."
Jack pauses, his confidence momentarily faltering. "Alright! Wait… Sparrow? ...Oh."
Reed laughs at his reaction. "Took you a second there."
Jack rolls his eyes, stepping back to the wheel. "Let's just get moving before you start calling me something worse."
Reed chuckles. "Yeah, yeah," he says, heading to the front of the ship to get a better view.
Jack steps onto the control tile, and the ship starts moving smoothly across the water, guided by the compass.
"Following this thing's gotta be better than aimlessly wandering the ocean," Jack mutters, his focus on the direction it's pointing.
Reed, leaning against the railing, looks out at the horizon. "Let's hope it leads somewhere worth the trouble."
An hour passes, and Reed, clearly bored, approaches Jack. "Let me sail the ship. I'm bored," he says with a sigh.
Jack glances at him, shrugs, and steps off the control tile. "Sure, knock yourself out," he says. As Reed takes over, Jack adds, "We don't even know if we're in the Grand Line or one of the Four Seas."
Reed grips the wheel with a grin. "Guess we'll find out eventually. Not like we have much choice."
"Yep," Jack replies with a pop at the end, moving to the side and sitting down.
Reed smirks as he focuses on the wheel. "Don't get too comfortable, Captain Sparrow. I might just take your job."
Jack chuckles, leaning back. "Be my guest. Just don't sink the ship."
Thirty minutes of silence later, Jack grumbles, "I'm so bored. I can see why people need a musician or something on a ship."
Reed smirks without looking away from the wheel. "What, my company isn't entertaining enough for you?"
Jack rolls his eyes. "You're about as entertaining as watching paint dry."
Reed chuckles. "Then get up and do something. Maybe fish? Or figure out what that compass is really pointing to."
Jack shrugs. "We don't have a fishing rod," he mutters. After a moment of thought, he adds, "I'm going to sleep."
Reed nods, keeping his eyes on the horizon. "Alright, I'll wake you up when we spot an island."
Jack stretches before heading below deck. "Don't forget. I don't want to miss anything interesting."
After an unknown amount of time Reed finally spots an island
Reed, spotting the island, throws a bamboo stick at Jack to wake him up.
Jack, startled and rubbing his head, exclaims, "What the hell! That hurt, remember I don't have any defense stats!"
Reed, unfazed, replies, "Oh, right! Anyway, we've got an island."
Jack grumbles, "I hate you," before adding, "Circle around the island first and find a village near the shore."
After a moment, Reed says, "There! A village," pointing toward a small settlement.
Jack stands up and says, "Dock near there," pointing to a nearby shore. "People might think we're pirates."
Reed, confused, asks, "Aren't we pirates?"
Jack turns to Reed, raising an eyebrow. "You've read a lot of fanfics, right? How do you not know that hiding our identity is the best course of action, especially since we're still weak?"
Reed scoffs, "Hey! It's not like that, okay? I'm just picky!" as he steers the ship toward the shore Jack pointed to earlier.
Jack chuckles, rolling his eyes. "Yeah, right" he mutters
Reed frowns, shaking his head as he focuses on steering the ship. "Should've read more fantasy fanfics, huh?" he mutters under his breath, "Maybe I would've been better at this pirate thing."
Jack smirks, "You might've learned a thing or two about not being a disaster, that's for sure."
As the ship reaches the shore, both of them jump onto the sandy beach.
Jack, looking towards the village, says, "Alright, let's head that way," pointing in the direction of the village.
Reed nods, walking alongside Jack. After a while, he asks, "What do you think the reward will be for finding civilization?"
Jack responds, "Who knows? But we'll find out soon enough. I just hope it's a devil fruit, or at least more stat points."
Reed hums thoughtfully. "If we're in the Grand Line, a devil fruit would be ideal so we can sell it. If we're in one of the Four Seas, then the stat points would be better."
After a moment of thought, Jack nods. "True. For now, let's head to the village." He slightly increases their pace.
Arriving at the village, Jack and Reed decide to take a moment to observe their surroundings. After a while, a local approaches them and asks if they need help.
Jack, confused, asks, "Why do you think we need help?"
The local looks them over, then responds, "Look at yourselves! You haven't had proper food in days, and your clothes are in tatters!"
Jack, realizing their clothes are indeed in tatters, feels a bit embarrassed. "It's fine! We can handle it. More importantly, I have a question—where are we?"
The local gives Jack an odd look before responding, "Where? In the East Blue, more specifically, this is Foosha Village."
Jack apologizes to the local, saying, "Sorry, we've been living in a mountain for a while and haven't come down until now. Only recently, we've grown big enough to venture out." After a brief pause, he separates from the local.
The local, sensing something off, decides to leave anyway. Jack turns to Reed and says, "So we're in the Goa Kingdom, specifically Foosha Village, where Luffy met Shanks."
Reed, processing the information, replies, "And you forgot to ask what the date is."
Jack sighs, muttering, "This is going to be a long day."
Reed responds, "Well, the sun is setting, so let's head back to the ship for now."
Jack nods in agreement, and they make their way back to the ship.
On their way back, Jack claims the rewards for completing the mission [Get out of the island and find civilization]. The rewards are 6 stat points and 1000 Beli. Jack nods, satisfied with the outcome.
(Jack) [200 » 1200]
Before Jack can allocate his stat points, Reed approaches from the side and asks, "So the compass points toward the islands Luffy goes?"
Jack thinks for a moment before replying, "Maybe, but we can't be too sure just yet."
Reed nods and after a reminder from Jack claims the rewards for the quest aswell.
