Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Marine Shocked, Angry Kong
Far at the end of the first half of the Grand Line, near Navy Headquarters on the Red Line, lies Marineford.
The grand Navy Headquarters building stands tall. The word "Marine" is inscribed in silver, with iron hooks forming the letters, and the seagull emblem, symbolizing "peace," sits in the middle.
A powerful and unyielding force of "justice" moves forward relentlessly. Anyone who looks directly at it can feel the weight of duty—joining the Marines, sacrificing for justice, and fighting without fear.
At this very moment, in the highest-level Marshal's office, "Kong" Kong, the then-Marshal of Navy Headquarters, sits confidently behind his desk.
He is in discussion with Sengoku, the Buddha Admiral, his closest ally, and Tsuru Vice Admiral, the Marine staff officer, about the increasingly grave situation unfolding in the Grand Line.
Tap...
Urgent footsteps.
The three Marine leaders stop speaking and look toward the door simultaneously.
Suddenly, Kong's adjutant bursts into the room, panting, shouting, "Report!!"
"Come in…"
Kong gestures for the adjutant to enter, asking directly, "What's the matter?"
After a quick salute to Admiral Sengoku and Vice Admiral Tsuru, the adjutant swiftly bows to Kong and presents a document with both hands: "Marshal Kong, the fleet led by Onigumo Vice Admiral has sent a distress signal to the headquarters. They claim that the Blue Sea area is under attack by the BIG-MOM pirates!"
"What!?" Kong exclaims, rising from his seat.
The Buddha Sengoku and Tsuru Vice Admiral exchange surprised glances, their expressions grave.
"Wait," Sengoku says with a frown, "Onigumo Vice Admiral was supposed to be on a mission in the first half of the Grand Line. How could he be attacked by the BIG-MOM pirates so suddenly?"
Sengoku furrows his brow, adding, "And the blue Sea area—it's near the G-8 fortress. The distance isn't far. Could it be that woman is trying to breach the boundary into the first half of the Grand Line?"
"Our intelligence has no reports of any other changes from the BIG-MOM Pirates…" Tsuru Vice Admiral calmly assesses the situation. "However, a few days ago, there were rumors of a pirate ship flying the BIG-MOM flag passing through coating and reaching Sabaody through Fish-Man Island.
It's been confirmed that they are the three children from the Charlotte family—young and underage."
"In other words," Tsuru concludes, "the ones who attacked Onigumo Vice Admiral might be just a few children from the Charlotte family?"
Kong's face darkened, and he gritted his teeth. "What is Onigumo doing? Just a few kids who haven't even grown up yet, and a Vice Admiral of Navy Headquarters is already helpless enough to ask for backup from headquarters?"
As he spoke, Kong picked up the photo handed to him by the adjutant.
His pupils shrank, and his expression changed to one of shock. "This is…"
The photo showed a silver-haired boy with long hair, dressed in luxurious clothing. Despite his youthful face, his expression radiated cruelty. He held a blood-stained sword, surrounded by Marine soldiers lying lifeless in pools of blood.
"This was just sent back," the adjutant reported, wiping sweat from his brow. "It's been confirmed that the attacker is a young man of unknown origin and identity."
He continued, "Commodore Dika's report wasn't very clear, but he described the boy's swordsmanship as extraordinary and his speed as terrifying. He was so fast that the naked eye couldn't track him.
It was like a gust of wind.
Before most Marine soldiers could react, they were already cut down and lying in pools of blood."
The adjutant hesitated but pressed on. "According to Commodore Dika, when Onigumo Vice Admiral engaged the mysterious boy, he speculated that the attacker might be one of Charlotte Linlin's younger children—the so-called 'natural monster' who's rumored to have perfectly inherited her talents."
"Moreover," he added, "Onigumo Vice Admiral seemed to be at a disadvantage during the fight, which is why they immediately called headquarters for help."
"What!?"
A Vice Admiral like Onigumo, known for his strength, was being overwhelmed in direct combat—by a boy who looked no older than fifteen or sixteen?
Unbelievable.
"In the Charlotte family, a child who perfectly inherited BIG-MOM's talents? A 'natural monster'?"
Kong's gaze remained fixed on the silver-haired boy in the photo, his expression grim. "Rumors about the Charlotte family…?"
"Yes," Tsuru Vice Admiral said thoughtfully, her brow furrowed. She sifted through the intelligence on the Charlotte family in her mind. After a moment, she spoke.
"It's been said that among the Charlotte family, a child who perfectly inherited Charlotte Linlin's monstrous abilities was born. He's called the 'Trembling Prince.'
But for the longest time, we assumed this was just another one of the BIG-MOM Pirates' usual exaggerated boasts, so we didn't take it seriously."
Tsuru sighed and lowered her head slightly. "I'm very sorry, Marshal Kong. It seems we were careless."
Tsuru took responsibility, knowing that Marine intelligence fell under her jurisdiction.
But she couldn't help thinking that the BIG-MOM Pirates' reputation for bragging often made separating truth from fiction an impossible task.
For example, the second son of the Charlotte family from the BIG-MOM Pirates, Charlotte Katakuri—known as the "Strongest Sweet Commander"—is rumored to have stood up immediately after birth and never once laid on his back.
Similarly, some of the prominent officers under the Beasts Pirates have been described as "natural disasters."
One is called the "Fire Calamity," leaving nothing but scorched earth wherever he goes. Another, known as the "Plague Calamity," spreads sickness like a curse, sparing no one in its path.
Each one is said to possess monstrous strength, only a step away from titles like "Unrivaled Under Heaven" or "World's Strongest."
And then there's the "Trembling Prince" of the Charlotte family, who hasn't even made his official debut.
So far, the only details about him come from scattered rumors, making it hard not to suspect some degree of self-promotion.
Unfortunately, the Marines have been unable to gather concrete records or detailed intelligence about him.
This left Tsuru, the Marine Staff Officer, skeptical about the legitimacy of these claims.
"Marshal Kong," Sengoku said seriously, breaking the silence. "True or not, Marine can't afford to ignore this boy."
Sengoku's expression turned grim as he continued, "I know Onigumo Vice Admiral's strength very well. For someone so young to fight him head-on without faltering—and even suppress him—you can see the sheer, terrifying talent in play."
"If we let this go unchecked, that boy could grow into a significant threat in the future."
At that moment, a Marine Major rushed into the room, panting and saluting nervously, sweat pouring down his face.
"Report to Marshal Kong…"
"Speak! No need for formalities. Is this about Onigumo Vice Admiral?" Kong asked directly, his tone sharp with unease.
Both Sengoku and Tsuru exchanged tense looks. An ominous feeling hung in the air as they turned their full attention to the Major.
"Yes, sir…" The Major's legs trembled slightly under the intense gazes of the Marine's top brass. His face was pale, and cold sweat dripped from his brow as he stammered, "Not long ago, the fleet led by Onigumo Vice Admiral sent a final distress signal to headquarters… then all contact was lost."
The room fell silent.
The Major continued, his voice shaking, "Additionally, his life card suddenly burned to ashes, confirming that Onigumo Vice Admiral has most likely… died in the line of duty."
"What did you say!?"
Kong's voice thundered, his face twisting in disbelief as the shocking news echoed through the room.
