Chapter 8: Chapter 8 : Luffy, You Wait To Be Vegetarian
The two moved so fast that they were nearly invisible to the naked eye.
Even Zoro could barely keep up, and the shock he felt was beyond words.
Every time Carl and Luffy clashed, the resulting shockwaves churned the sea, creating massive waves that nearly turned into a tsunami.
It was terrifying.
But Zoro had a feeling—this wasn't even their full strength.
After exchanging several blows with Luffy, Carl silently drew his black blade. With a single, effortless slash, he sent a shockwave forward, splitting the ocean beneath his feet and even tearing through the clouds above.
Seeing this, Luffy didn't dodge. Instead, he bit into his thumb, took a deep breath, and inflated his hand to the size of a giant's. His fist, coated in Haki, came crashing down to meet the attack.
BOOM!
The entire sea roared in chaos.
—
In the end, their fight was cut short.
The shockwaves they created were too powerful, nearly capsizing the ship.
With no other choice, they stopped and returned to the deck, where Nami and Zoro stared at them like they weren't even human.
"So this… is the battle of the strong?" Zoro muttered in disbelief.
"More or less," Carl replied casually. "But since the location wasn't ideal, neither Luffy nor I could go all out."
Zoro felt a heavy blow to his confidence.
So… that world-shaking battle wasn't even their full power?!
Are these two monsters?!
Carl patted Zoro on the shoulder, offering some words of encouragement.
"Don't worry, Zoro. You have a solid foundation and great potential. As long as you keep training and pushing yourself, you'll catch up soon.
Luffy's currently stuck at a bottleneck. He won't be making much progress for a while."
Zoro clenched his fists and declared firmly, "I won't fall too far behind! I will become the world's greatest swordsman!"
That's the spirit of someone with true ambition.
As for why Luffy was stuck, the reason was simple—Carl couldn't teach him Advanced Armament Haki (Emission Haki). For that, they'd have to wait until they met Rayleigh.
Carl also never told Luffy about the true nature of his Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.
To Luffy, his power was simply the Gomu Gomu no Mi—the Rubber Fruit.
And Carl intended to keep it that way.
Because knowing Luffy… if he ever found out that his entire fate had been pre-written by some "author," he'd probably hunt them down and give them a good beating.
—
In the days that followed, Luffy continued his regular training, while Carl shifted his focus to Zoro, helping him grow even stronger.
Carl passed down a special breathing technique and body-strengthening method to Zoro and Nami—something inherited from his previous family.
As for what Carl did in his past life… well, that's a story for another time.
Zoro still wasn't strong enough. He needed to refine his breathing and train his body to build a more solid foundation. With more effort, he'd grow even faster.
As for Nami, she was too weak to handle intense training. She had to develop her strength gradually.
If the opportunity arose, giving her a Devil Fruit would be the most reliable way to enhance her abilities.
—
Three days had passed since they left Shells Town, and training had been constant.
Of course, Carl didn't make them train all the time—there was also plenty of time to relax. A proper balance between work and rest was necessary.
—
On this particular day, a massive bird soared across the sky.
Carl glanced up at it and sighed.
'Luffy should be strong enough now… so hopefully, he won't get carried away by that thing this time.'
Just as he had that thought, Luffy pointed excitedly.
"Mr. Carl! Everyone! That bird is huge! Let's have it for lunch!"
Before anyone could stop him, he launched himself into the air using Moonwalk.
Carl rolled his eyes but still called out, "Luffy! If you don't bring that bird back, you'll be eating nothing but vegetables!"
Luffy immediately panicked mid-air, nearly losing his footing on Moonwalk.
For Luffy, eating meat was life itself. Being forced to go vegetarian? Pure torture!
And the worst part? Watching others eat meat while he couldn't.
Determined, Luffy narrowed his eyes. With a burst of Conqueror's Haki, the massive bird instantly fainted.
Then, with a triumphant grin, he crashed down from the sky with the unconscious bird.
—
"That idiot!" Zoro and Nami yelled as they scrambled for cover.
Carl remained expressionless, but arcs of electricity crackled around him as he used mind control.
His massive black sword, which was normally strapped to his back, floated into position beneath the falling bird. Using magnetic force, he slowed the descent, reducing the impact.
By the time the bird was about to land, it had almost completely stopped falling.
Luffy, meanwhile, landed smoothly, grinning like an idiot.
WHAM!
Nami immediately punched him on the head, leaving a giant lump.
That punch was nearly infused with Armament Haki—as expected from Nami.
Luffy just laughed. "Hee hee! Mr. Carl, I brought back the big bird! Let's have a barbecue now!"
Carl sighed.
With a wave of his hand, he controlled his black sword and flung the bird into the sea to clean it.
Then, with a single precise slash, he effortlessly removed its feathers and internal organs.
Finally, he suspended the processed bird mid-air with his sword… and began cooking it with electricity.
Carl sprinkled salt, brushed on some soy sauce, and after a series of quick preparations, the giant bird began to give off a mouthwatering aroma.
Before long, it was fully cooked.
"Alright, time to eat!" Carl announced.
He divided the bird meat among them.
Using such a fine sword for something as simple as cutting meat felt like a waste… but food was important, so whatever.
Each person got a portion, and the four of them dug in without hesitation.
—
Even though the cooking method was rough, the food in this world was something special.
It seemed to be packed with energy, and as long as the cook wasn't completely terrible, any kind of meat turned out delicious.
At the very least, it was definitely edible.
—
As they ate, Carl suddenly spoke.
"Luffy, about your straw hat—"
Before Carl could finish, Luffy instantly shielded his food with his arms.
"The straw hat's Armament Haki hasn't faded! Mr. Carl, you can't steal my meat!"
Carl blinked.
'Well, at least he's getting smarter…'
With a sigh, Carl changed the topic.
"Luffy, we need to find a chef."
Luffy paused mid-bite. "Huh? But Mr. Carl, don't you already know how to cook?"
"I know a little," Carl admitted. "But with the intensity of your training, you need proper nutrition to keep up. That means we need a professional chef. Besides, as a teacher, it's embarrassing if I have to cook for my disciples all the time!"
Luffy nodded in understanding. "Oh, alright… but I actually wanted to find a musician first!"
Carl sighed.
'This guy… even now, he's still thinking about a musician?'
Nami shook her head in exasperation. Zoro, on the other hand, laughed out loud.
Luffy's way of thinking was truly bizarre.
Maybe, in his mind, being a pirate meant having a party every day—eating, drinking, singing, and dancing.
Did he even know the difference between being at sea and going on vacation?
No wonder people often said the Straw Hat Pirates weren't real pirates… but adventurers instead.
With such an unpredictable captain, who knew what kind of crew they would become?
Carl could only shake his head and go along with it.
"Alright, alright. We'll find a musician too," he said.
"Not just any musician," Luffy grinned. "We need to find the best one!"
Carl chuckled. "Fine. The best musician it is—you're the captain, after all."
