Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Come here, my little sunshine, let mommy see you one more time...
A young boy runs towards her, his arms outstretched. Despite the baby face, what came from his mouth were deep screeches of yearning.
No mom, come back, COME BACK!
"Huff, huff, huff... Sweat poured down his forehead. Subaru woke up frightened, gasping for air. Mom...
As he reached out his hands, he quickly pulled them back. He knew it was all a dream, yet expectation still filled his heart. He hoped he would hear her call one more time. He believed she would prepare his breakfast. He prayed she would sit beside him again.
Yet he denied it all, for he knew it was all just a futile wish from a despondent man.
As he reached for his neck, for the amulet...?
Wait, where is the amulet!? Where is it!? WHERE IS IT?!
Hyperventilating, Subaru scampered off his bed, dragging his barely woken self across the room, trying his hardest to find the amulet. Feeling no luck, he called his aunt for help, "Auntie, AUNTIE! I need help NOW!"
Feeling his desperate cry for help, Sakura ran upstairs, her ladle still dripping with miso soup remnants. "What, what, WHAT?!" Panicking at the notion that her beloved Subaru might have broken his foot, or worse, snapped his neck, she ran up two steps at a time. Oh no, oh no, oh no, he is the last keepsake of sis...
BANG!
With a loud kick, she kicked the door open, fearing the worst. She expected to see a puddle of blood, or mangled flesh with limbs twisted awkwardly, yet all she got was a screaming child, a ramshackle room, and a terrible cry.
With a large whack, she thwacked Subaru's head, clearly displeased at his desperate cry for help. "You scared me; what were you thinking—" Just before she could finish her sentence, the guttural cry came again.
"Auntie, auntie, *sniff, sniff*, I lost it… Confused, Sakura tilted her head, wondering what he was talking about. Subaru wiped his nose before continuing, "Auntie, I lost it. I lost the amulet Mom gave me before she left, before she was killed."
At this, Sakura became silent. She knew what it was.
A small amulet, no larger than a medium cookie, was given to young Subaru before his mother left that night. Inlaid within was a large emerald, cut in many different facets, asymmetrical yet symmetrical. Etched within the sides were lines eerily reminiscent of circuit lines, pulsing ever so often. At the center, however, was a sigil.
A sigil etched deep into the emerald.
A hammer stood tall, surrounded by a sword and a staff. Surrounding it were three humanoid figures: one missing its jaw, one blindfolded, and one holding a banner.
"...Tie, Auntie, hello?" Sakura snapped back to reality once Subaru started waving his hands in front of her. Shaking her head, she explained, "I saw you go out with the amulet, but you came back without it around your neck. You must have lost it then..."
Holding his hair in both hands, Subaru began panicking again. Sakura simply sat down beside him, patting his back. "Once your uncle and everyone else come back, maybe we can help you search for it. You know we—oops, almost forgot, I have soup on the stove; gotta go, bye!"
With a swift dash, she ran out, attempting to save the soup on the stove.
Just as Subaru attempted to get up, his phone rang. A pop-up appeared on it:
Hero gone?
Kaiju missing in action?
Lost something?
