Chapter 28: Welcome Ceremony (Part 2)
The taciturn Alan Houston and Chris Childs partnered in the backcourt, the rookie John Wallace had a bitter face, and the three were assigned to the main side.
Starks and Lee partnered in the backcourt, but this time he showed a gloating expression, he was a little unhappy with Larry Johnson's attitude.
Veteran Herb Williams, who had no sense of presence, had no interest in getting involved in the infighting. He greeted Lee and stopped talking.
This kind of training game is naturally not of high intensity. In the first round, Patrick Ewing received the ball in the low post on the left side, took a step inside, jumped up in the paint area and shot a hook that hit the rim and went out.
Newbie Walter McCarty grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to Lee.
Chris Childs immediately took the lead in defense. Lee, holding the ball in his left hand, completed a behind-the-back pass and carried the opponent across half court quickly.
After observing the positions, Lee immediately directed Larry Johnson on the left wing to cut in diagonally, signaling the opponent to receive the ball in the elbow area on the right side of the free throw line.
After glaring at Lee, Larry Johnson reluctantly moved quickly. The rookie John Wallace stuck to his side nervously, not daring to relax at all.
Lee at the top of the arc also began to move sideways, and without waiting for Larry Johnson to fully arrive, he flicked his wrist and made a ground pass.
Seeing the basketball coming, Larry Johnson subconsciously quickened his pace and cut inside with the ball. The moment he received the ball, he found himself in the paint area. He took a step forward and then took off into the air!
Charles Oakley, who was standing under the basket, hadn't reacted yet, and Larry Johnson dunked with both hands!
"Ah!!"
After landing, there was a burst of shouting. Charles Oakley, who was already a little unhappy with Larry Johnson, immediately stepped forward and pushed him:
"Don't shout in front of me, kid, this is New York!"
Larry Johnson was not a good-tempered person either. He stepped forward and pushed the old man,
"Show some respect to me. I'm not one of those rookies!"
The assistant coach on the sidelines hadn't reacted yet, and the two had already twisted into a ball. Lee, who was standing outside the three-point line, didn't step forward to break up the fight, but watched the situation on the court with a smile.
Jeff Van Gundy saw that something was wrong and immediately rushed into the court, shouting at the same time:
"Hey! Stop! It's dangerous!"
In the end, Patrick Ewing couldn't stand it anymore and stepped forward to pull the two apart.
Lee began to fan the flames. Larry Johnson was facing the rookie John Wallace. Relying on his physical advantage, he was able to break through the defense and get to the basket with a simple curling cut.
After several assists, Larry Johnson no longer rejected Lee's command and almost exclaimed "It smells good!"
Charles Oakley wanted to teach the new player a lesson, and his movements became bigger and bigger. The two of them were completely competing.
Alan Houston took advantage of Patrick Ewing's screen near the left baseline and quickly ran to the left elbow of the free throw line.
Starks' defense did not catch up in time, but Lee noticed the movement behind him and suddenly blocked Chris Childs' passing route.
The pass was a beat late, and after Alan Houston caught the ball, Starks got in front of him, put the ball in his right hand and dribbled sideways, relying on his height advantage, and finally completed a drifting mid-range shot from the free throw line!
"Bang!"
After not touching the ball for several rounds, Alan Houston missed his first shot.
The basketball bounced into Starks' hands, and then he threw the ball to Lee who was rushing across the center line. On the other side, Larry Johnson rushed along the right sideline.
Lee, who received the ball, noticed that Charles Oakley was quickly returning to defense. He kept accelerating with the ball in his left hand, dribbled quickly behind his back near the three-point line, and turned around drastically the moment he switched to his right hand.
Chris Charles quickly adjusted his center of gravity and stretched out his hand to pull. Lee, who was catching the ball with his left hand, suddenly lowered his center of gravity and pretended to break through.
As the opponent slid to the right rear, Lee dribbled past the three-point line and immediately stopped, then he dribbled the ball hard and took a step back, then quickly shot a jump shot!
Chris Charles was shaken and lost his balance, and Larry Johnson, who ran to the basket to catch the ball, saw the basketball go into the net.
Larry Johnson, who was having a great time, turned his head and immediately shouted to Lee:
"Damn it! Rookie, pass the ball to me! Aerial relay! Can't you see it?"
"I'm the point guard. I have the final say on the court. All you have to do is run your position obediently instead of complaining to me!"
When Larry Johnson heard Lee's words, he almost exploded with anger and rushed to Lee with a menacing momentum.
Lee pushed away Chris Charles who was blocking him and walked up to Larry Johnson:
"If you want to score easily, don't complain to me. The ball is in my hand and I have the final say!"
Seeing that a conflict was about to occur, Jeff Van Gundy immediately rushed over, quickly separated the two, and shouted:
"Time out, take a break! Everyone stay calm!"
Charles Oakley came over and patted Lee on the shoulder, and continued to whisper,
"Lee, I'm here to protect you. Give him two punches! This guy thinks this is Charlotte. He's out of fashion!"
The real core player Patrick Ewing acted as a peacemaker again. He noticed that Larry Johnson looked unhappy and immediately said:
"Shit! Stop talking! I don't want to see news of internal strife in the team on TV!"
Larry Johnson, feeling embarrassed, glared at Lee twice, and finally stopped talking.
"."
The morning training session ended in a bad mood, and the atmosphere was eased in the afternoon when the players followed the assistant coach to practice tactical routines.
The black players lost their temper quickly, and all the unpleasantness in the morning was forgotten. They talked about beautiful girls, and Larry Johnson smiled.
"The wonderful thing about playing in New York is that there are always enthusiastic young girls here!"
"LJ, you have to pay attention to the New York media! These guys report everything. Even if you change your hairstyle, someone will talk about it for two days!"
Charles Oakley was beaming with joy as he taught Larry Johnson, who was standing beside him, what to pay attention to in New York. The two of them had completely stopped having any friction.
"New York is really great, but I still need some time to adapt. I like the nightlife here!"
"Lee, you're not old enough to drink yet! Next time we go to the bar, I'll order you a glass of milk!"
Larry Johnson, who was still aggressive in the morning, also began to tease Lee and showed a friendly attitude.
"Don't compete with young people in drinking capacity. When you are older, your body metabolism is slower. Even if you put all your energy together, you may not be my match!"
"WOW!"
After hearing what Lee said, Starks started to make a noise:
"I swear, Lee is not kidding. When it comes to drinking, I admit that I am really old!"
Alan Houston was using this break to comfort the new players, and Charles Oakley ignored them, leaving everyone feeling anxious.
"All rookies go through these things. When I was in Detroit, I also carried a bag for a season."
Hearing the consolation, John Wallace and Walter McCarty still had bitter faces.
At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, Jeff Van Gundy announced the end of the training session with a heavy expression. The young coach still couldn't figure out how to use Larry Johnson.
After returning to the locker room, Charles Oakley smiled maliciously again, sat down in his seat, and said loudly:
"John, Walter, you played like shit in the training game this morning. It's your turn to show your skills!"
Stretching out his legs, Charles Oakley motioned for the two men to quickly untie his shoelaces. The two newbies didn't dare to say much, but smiled and bent down to do it.
"Lee, we also prepared a special gift for you, I hope you will like it!"
Hearing what Ewing said, Lee shrugged his shoulders and didn't care.
When everyone left the locker room and came to the parking lot, talking and laughing, Lee couldn't help cursing in a low voice when he saw that his car was full of popcorn:
"Damn it! Looks like I'll have to walk home!"
Charles Oakley saw Lee's distressed look and laughed and shouted again:
"Rookie, welcome to New York!"
