NBA: The Basketball Miracle

Chapter 26: The Knicks, a team full of big brothers

On August 1, Lee also flew to Atlanta with his friends. The 26th Summer Olympics was coming to an end, and it would be too late if he didn't join in the fun!

The most eye-catching event of the day was the track and field competition. Lee also witnessed Michael Johnson win the men's 400m championship with a score of 43.49 seconds.

After a day of hard work, everyone's excitement has eased. Except for the big man Knight who still lives in Los Angeles, everyone on the Connecticut basketball team is here today.

After returning to the hotel at night, everyone cursed the profiteers as unkind people.

During the Summer Olympics, the price of accommodation increased significantly.

Ray Allen has been in a bad mood. He always feels that his future is bleak when playing in Milwaukee.

"It's not bad to play for the Bucks. They are in the same Central Division as the Bulls, so I have more opportunities to meet my idols!"

Lee joked about the gloomy Ray Allen, who had always dreamed of facing off against Michael Jordan. This time his dream came true. Being in the same Central Division, the Bucks and the Bulls had many opportunities to play against each other.

Ray Allen sighed helplessly. His life plan was disrupted the moment he was selected:

"This is the only good news. However, playing for the Bucks, I should be able to get a starting position and have plenty of playing time, but I won't get too many shots."

"Have you met your Knicks teammates? I always feel like they're not easy to get along with."

Lee felt that the atmosphere in the Knicks' locker room was doomed to be bad. Simply put, it was full of big brothers.

"This is the off-season, and those veterans are not interested in greeting rookies. But John is a good person. He helped me find a good apartment in Manhattan."

Ray Allen doesn't like the Knicks' playing style at all. When he went to New York to watch games when he was in school, it was mostly to watch away teams.

The Knicks' offense is often just bad, using "iron-blooded" defense to pull the opponent to the same level as themselves, and then relying on their rich experience to win:

"I hope our rookie season goes well. I think the Bulls can still win the championship in the new season!"

Lee saw that Ray Allen was becoming a crazy fan again, so he quickly changed the subject:

"After watching the closing ceremony, you can come to New York for a few days. Life in Milwaukee is really too boring!"

"."

On August 3, at the Centennial Olympic Stadium in Atlanta, the "Dream Team III" easily defeated the Yugoslavia national team 95:69 and won the men's basketball gold medal.

Except for Ewing, all of the "Big Four Centers" participated in this Olympics, and Lee also witnessed the dominance of the "Dream Team" on the spot.

1996 was also the 100th anniversary of the birth of the modern Olympic Games. After watching the closing ceremony on August 4, everyone did not stay in Atlanta for too long and flew back to New York early.

After the Olympics, the free market has become lively again. Charles Barkley of the Suns has been involved in trade rumors recently, but Phoenix fans do not believe that Barkley will leave the team.

On August 19, a blockbuster deal appeared again:

The Houston Rockets traded Chucky Brown, Mark Bryant, Sam Cassell and Robert Horry to the Phoenix Suns;

Eventually, they traded for Charles Barkley and a 1999 second-round draft pick.

33-year-old Charles Barkley, 33-year-old Hakeem Olajuwon, and 34-year-old Clyde Drexler formed the Houston Rockets' old Big Three!

Although they are a bit older, a number of sports media have given high praise to this deal, and the New York media has been very critical:

"The Knicks' reinforcements during the offseason have left us with no hope of winning the championship!"

A new wave of attacks on Ewing and John Starks swept New York again, and fans and the media began to miss the Knicks team with a gorgeous offense that won the championship in the 1970s.

In addition to spending money to subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, Lee also bought a copy of the New York Post every day.

The New York media's jealousy and praise for the Houston Rockets' aging Big Three have become a source of happiness for Lee at the end of August.

Training step by step and being teammates with Ray Allen for two years, Lee learned to act according to the plan.

Everything can be detailed. Lee is not like Ray Allen who has obsessive-compulsive disorder and he will relax occasionally.

Even without the game, [Ray Allen's excellent explosiveness] turned completely green, and the hard work was rewarded.

On September 4, the Knicks signed veteran Buck Williams to strengthen their inside line, but the deal was criticized by the New York media.

The veteran has already been labeled as a failure before he even played a single game for the Knicks.

Since there are preseason games to be played in early October, the Knicks also started training camp early.

Lee stayed in Manhattan for more than two months, and the only teammates he met were John Starks and Alan Houston, who had just joined the team.

The former was his neighbor, and the latter he met at the New York Athletic Club.

Alan Houston is a nice guy and a devout Christian. He left a good impression on Lee and the two even trained together for a week.

On the morning of the 10th, John Starks, who had just returned from vacation, circled Lee's car in the parking lot of the apartment.

"You actually drive such an old-fashioned car. When you make money, you should spend it! A new Chevrolet sports car costs less than $40,000."

Lee curled his lips. That was 40,000 US dollars! It was enough for a normal family to live a wealthy life for a year!

"A classic model from 1982, it's hard to find a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo in such good condition on the market!"

Lee bought this car when he was studying at the University of Connecticut. It was a top-of-the-line car at the time, and its configuration is still up-to-date today.

Sitting in the car, Starks looked at the neat interior and sniffed the air inside the car twice:

"It doesn't smell like marijuana, it's not bad, young people are better off not smoking that stuff!"

"Just to introduce you to the rules of the locker room. The rookies have to serve the veterans!"

Upon hearing this, Lee, who was driving, immediately smiled and asked,

"Didn't you tell me that the Knicks are very united and have a harmonious internal atmosphere?"

Rolling down the car window and looking at the street view outside, Starks, who was resting his chin on his hand, seemed to have forgotten what he had said before and chuckled:

"The team was indeed very united before, but you know, the new Larry Johnson must be a difficult person to get along with!"

"Grandmama didn't have a good relationship with his teammates in the Hornets. Now that he's in New York, his status has dropped. Don't expect him to be in a good mood."

"Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing are both old-school. New players have to serve these two, and daily errands are inevitable."

"The most important thing is that I am also a 31-year-old veteran. It's time for me to enjoy the treatment of a veteran. Lee, you are the youngest in the team. You know some rules!"

Lee turned around and forced a smile while driving, but cursed in his heart:

"My grades are not that good, but there are big brothers everywhere!"
