Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Hemostasis
"Tsunade-sama's medical ninjutsu is truly incredible!" Haruto exclaimed, looking at his fully healed arm in awe.
Even though everyone knew that Tsunade was the strongest medical-nin, witnessing her abilities firsthand still left them in amazement.
"If more people could learn this kind of medical ninjutsu, many in the village would probably be spared in this war. It's a pity the Jonin council rejected the proposal to establish a medical system," Kato Dan said, his gaze distant. He was thinking of another fallen comrade who had perished during a past mission alongside Mokume Kato.
Sitting by the window, the soft, pure light illuminated Kato Dan's long blue hair, giving it a luster. Combined with his handsome features and melancholic eyes, he was quite the heartthrob. At least, Tsunade, who still had the energy and spirit of a hopeful young woman, found him particularly captivating.
"It's okay, stop worrying," Tsunade reassured Kato Dan with a warm smile. "Even though the village didn't agree to the proposal, the old man still asked me to train a small group of ninjas in medical ninjutsu. They've already played a critical role in this war. Soon enough, the village will approve my request!"
Tsunade's tone was confident, and she puffed out her chest proudly as she glanced over at Haruto and his teammates.
"Why don't the three of you learn some basic medical ninjutsu from me? Even mastering the basics can greatly increase your survival chances on the battlefield," she suggested.
Haruto, Aburame Nami, and Inuzuka Ryo exchanged surprised glances, clearly intrigued.
"Well, I don't have any gifts to offer, but I can teach you a useful basic technique. If you can master it and advance further, you'll be qualified to become proper medical ninjas," Tsunade said as she began leading them to an area with more space.
Kato Dan smiled faintly as he followed behind. He knew that if these Genin could pick up even basic medical techniques, their chances of surviving the war would skyrocket. Even if they didn't fully grasp the complexity of medical ninjutsu, learning to stop their own bleeding when injured could save their lives by preventing wounds from worsening before proper treatment.
"This spot is perfect!" Tsunade declared, stopping near a small river next to the camp. This river provided the stronghold's water supply, essential for their daily needs. In this part of the world, close to the Land of Rain, water was abundant.
"Now, catch a small animal – a fish from the river, a pheasant from the woods, anything. You'll use it for practice and as a demonstration. By the way, consider it a snack for later too," she added playfully, finding a large rock to sit on while Kato Dan joined her, preparing a small campfire for cooking.
The rain had finally stopped after days of downpour, and tonight the sky was clear, dotted with stars. The fresh, clean air and the green grass seemed to shimmer as if everything had been washed anew.
A few minutes later, Haruto and his teammates returned with their spoils. Haruto had caught two pheasants, Aburame Nami had a hare, and Inuzuka Ryo and Tetsumaru had caught several river fish.
"Great, now watch closely," Tsunade instructed as she took the hare from Nami. "I'll shave off the fur so it's easier for you to observe."
Her hands lit up with blue chakra, forming a precise scalpel-like edge. This was the Chakra Scalpel, an advanced A-rank medical jutsu.
"Watch carefully," she said as she gently rendered the hare unconscious. Then, with delicate precision, she removed a patch of fur and used her Chakra Scalpel to make a small cut. Blood began trickling from the wound.
"What I'm going to teach you today is the most basic of medical techniques: The Hemostasis Technique," Tsunade explained.
She pressed her glowing hand to the wound, and almost immediately, the blood stopped flowing as a scab began to form over the cut.
"When the wound is larger and deeper, you can use needles and thread to suture it before applying the Hemostasis Technique. This method speeds up the recovery. For demonstration purposes, I'll now sever an artery to simulate more extensive bleeding," Tsunade explained as she made another precise incision on the hare.
Her students listened intently, absorbing every word.
Meanwhile, Kato Dan, having learned these basics long ago, focused on building the fire, occasionally glancing at the group. He was already thinking about turning the pheasants into a tasty snack later.
"The Hemostasis Technique is the most basic and foundational medical ninjutsu," Tsunade continued. "It is required before learning more advanced techniques such as Healing Jutsu or Palm Sage Jutsu. The principle is simple: by applying chakra in small amounts, you stimulate the body's ability to produce clotting agents faster, hastening the blood's natural coagulation process."
Tsunade had a natural gift for teaching, as evidenced later by her training of Haruno Sakura, who would go on to master medical ninjutsu under her tutelage.
Haruto observed everything with his Sharingan, a great aid when it came to learning new techniques. His visual prowess allowed him to memorize each of Tsunade's movements and chakra application with precise detail.
"Now it's your turn to try it yourselves," Tsunade announced, treating the pheasants and leaving one for Haruto and another for Inuzuka Ryo.
Haruto hesitated slightly as he held the kunai in his hand. He didn't want to make too large a cut, worried that his skills might not yet be sufficient to stop the bleeding. He carefully made a small incision on the skin of the pheasant, where the feathers had been plucked.
"Focus, gather your chakra in your hands, and..." Haruto's mind replayed Tsunade's demonstration through the memories recorded by his Sharingan. He pressed his hand over the wound.
After a few minutes, when Haruto removed his hand, the wound had completely closed.
"Well done, little Uchiha," Tsunade said with a smile as she ruffled Haruto's hair. She then turned to help guide Inuzuka Ryo and Aburame Nami with their attempts.
Although she hailed from the Senju clan, Tsunade did not hold the same animosity toward the Uchiha clan as her great-uncle, Tobirama. Like her grandfather, Hashirama, Tsunade viewed all Konoha's clans with an open mind and an even heart.
In the original work, we even see Kakashi use a version of the Hemostasis Technique when he fights Obito in Kamui's dimension – proof that this simple technique can go a long way in keeping a ninja alive.
