Chapter 58: Yuki’s First strike
The dawn was pale and cold, the first light barely cutting through the low-hanging mist over the frozen lowlands. The Yuki clan's forces moved like shadows, their breaths forming fleeting clouds as they descended from their positions in the surrounding ridges. At the forefront, Yamamoto stood with his arms crossed, his piercing gaze locked onto the frozen lake below.
Beside him, Michiko, the commander of the Yuki clan's Ice Release specialists, adjusted the fur-lined cloak draped over her shoulders. She glanced at Yamamoto, her expression a mix of determination and concern.
"They let their guards down" Yamamoto said calmly, his breath barely visible despite the cold. "That will be their downfall."
Michiko nodded, gripping the hilt of her blade. "The ice is ready. My squad has been working through the night to weaken it. Once they're on the lake, there will be no escape."
Yamamoto gave a small nod of approval, his gaze unwavering. "Good. Let's move to the next phase. Are the decoy squads in position?"
"They're ready," Michiko confirmed. "They'll lead the Kaguya right where we need them."
"Then it's time," Yamamoto said, stepping forward. "I'll deal with their scouts. You know what to do."
....
The Yuki decoy squads moved with practiced precision, their movements deliberate as they made themselves visible at the edge of the Kaguya camp. One of the decoy leaders gave a sharp whistle, drawing the attention of a group of Kaguya warriors lounging near their fires.
"Yuki shinobi!" one of the Kaguya shouted, pointing toward the decoy squad.
The Yuki ninjas feigned panic, turning and fleeing toward the narrow pass. The Kaguya warriors, fooled by their apparent fear, leapt to their feet and gave chase, their shouts echoing through the camp.
From his hidden vantage point on the ridge, Yamamoto watched the scene unfold, his sharp eyes following the pursuing Kaguya. His attention shifted to the ridgeline where a small group of Kaguya scouts stayed, their bone-crafted weapons gleaming in the weak light.
"They can't be allowed to warn the main force," Yamamoto muttered to himself before vanishing in a blur of motion.
The Kaguya scouts didn't see Yamamoto coming. He moved like a ghost through the snow, his blade already drawn and glowing faintly with heat.
The first scout turned just in time to see a flash of fire before Yamamoto's blade cut him down. The others spun around, their weapons raised, but Yamamoto was faster.
"Katon: Hōn Dantō (火遁・焔断刀, Fire Release: Flame Severing Blade)"
A blade of flame erupted from Yamamoto's sword, cutting through the icy air and forcing the scouts to scatter. They tried to regroup, but Yamamoto was relentless. Within moments, the last of the scouts fell, their bodies steaming in the snow.
With the scouts neutralized, Yamamoto sheathed his blade and turned his attention back to the main battlefield.
"Time to head back"
...…
The air over the frozen lake was silent, save for the faint creaking of ice beneath the feet of the advancing Kaguya warriors. Their forces, hundreds strong, moved in a staggered formation, their overconfidence palpable as they marched deeper onto the shimmering expanse.
From their vantage point atop the ridges surrounding the lake, Yamamoto and Michiko watched as the trap began to take shape. The Yuki decoy squads had done their job, baiting the Kaguya into the narrow pass and onto the ice below.
"They've taken the bait," Michiko said quietly, her breath visible in the frigid air.
Yamamoto nodded, his sharp gaze fixed on the Kaguya. "They have failed as ninjas. They see prey, not a trap. Begin the collapse as soon as they're fully on the lake."
Michiko raised her hand, signaling her Ice Release squad, who waited in silence below.
The Kaguya warriors were halfway across the lake when the first cracks echoed like thunder across the frozen expanse.
"What's that?" one of the Kaguya barked, stopping in his tracks.
Before anyone could respond, the cracks multiplied, spiderwebbing out from the center of the lake where Michiko's squad had weakened the ice.
"Collapse it," Michiko commanded, her voice firm.
"Hyōton: Hyōshin no Hōkai (氷遁・氷震の崩壊, Ice Release: Collapse of the Icequake)"
The Yuki Ice Release users unleashed their jutsu, sending spikes of chakra through the frozen surface. The ice groaned and shattered, dropping dozens of Kaguya warriors into the freezing depths. Screams filled the air as the icy water swallowed men whole, their weapons and armor dragging them down into the black void.
Panic spread through the remaining Kaguya forces. Those still on solid ice scrambled to retreat, but the lake was no longer a battlefield—it was a death trap.
"Now!" Yamamoto's voice carried across the ridges, his commanding tone cutting through the chaos.
The Yuki clan's main force, hidden among the cliffs, launched their ambush. Kunai and shuriken rained down from above, precise and unrelenting.
"Hyōton: Hyōsō no Arashi (氷遁・氷槍の嵐, Ice Release: Storm of Ice Spears)"
Michiko and her squad unleashed a storm of ice spears, skewering Kaguya warriors as they scrambled for cover. The cries of the injured and dying echoed across the battlefield as the Yuki pressed their advantage.
Yamamoto descended from the ridge like a thunderbolt, flames flickering to life in his hands.
A blade of pure fire ignited in his grip as he charged into the fray, cutting down Kaguya warriors with ruthless efficiency. His movements were precise, each strike calculated to maximize damage and minimize wasted effort.
The Kaguya warriors tried to regroup, but the combined assault of fire and ice was too much. Those who escaped the freezing lake found themselves under relentless attack from the Yuki forces on the ridge.
At the heart of the chaos, Yamamoto moved with an intensity that was both terrifying and mesmerizing. He faced a cluster of Kaguya who had managed to break away from the main group.
The cluster of Kaguya warriors snarled as they closed in on Yamamoto, their sharpened bone weapons gleaming in the pale moonlight. Yamamoto stood at the ready, his flaming blade casting an orange glow across the icy battlefield. The heat radiating from him melted the snow beneath his feet, steam rising in soft tendrils.
"Come," Yamamoto said, his voice calm but menacing. "Show me the strength of the Kaguya clan."
The largest warrior rushed first, a massive bone spear jutting from his arm, aimed straight for Yamamoto's chest. Yamamoto sidestepped with ease, twisting his blade in a downward arc. The spear splintered on contact, flames consuming the shards as they scattered. Yamamoto pivoted fluidly, bringing his blade across the warrior's midsection. Fire erupted from the strike, engulfing the man as he collapsed in a heap, his screams fading into the night.
Another Kaguya attacked from the left, swinging a scythe-like bone weapon at Yamamoto's head. Yamamoto ducked low, the weapon slicing through empty air. With a snap of his fingers, flames burst to life along his free hand.
"Katon: Enshō no Shōgeki (火遁・炎掌の衝撃, Fire Release: Impact of the Flame Palm)"
Yamamoto's fiery palm shot forward, striking the warrior square in the chest. The explosion sent the attacker flying backward, flames spreading across his body as he tumbled across the frozen lake.
Two more Kaguya came at him in unison. One aimed a high slash while the other lunged low, their attacks perfectly synchronized. Yamamoto leapt straight into the air, twisting his body in a corkscrew motion. Flames spiraled around him as he ascended, creating a vortex of heat that repelled both attackers.
"Katon: Enryū no Mai (火遁・焔流の舞, Fire Release: Dance of the Blazing Stream)"
As he landed, Yamamoto drove his blade into the ice, unleashing a wave of fire that surged outward. The flames roared like a living beast, consuming everything in their path. The two warriors screamed as the inferno overwhelmed them, their forms vanishing into the blaze.
Behind Yamamoto, a massive Kaguya warrior roared, his entire body encased in hardened bone armor. "Your flames are nothing!" the warrior bellowed, charging forward like a living battering ram.
Yamamoto smirked, pulling his sword into a ready stance. "We'll see about that."
As the armored Kaguya bore down on him, Yamamoto crouched low, flames gathering around him in a concentrated aura. Just before the warrior reached him, Yamamoto sprang upward, meeting the charge head-on with a devastating slash.
"Katon: Shakunetsu no Senkō (火遁・灼熱の閃光, Fire Release: Scorching Flash)"
The blade ignited in a brilliant flash of red hot fire with bits of blue flames, cutting through the bone armor as though it were paper. The Kaguya froze mid-charge, his armor cracking and glowing red-hot before shattering completely. With a final burst of flames, the warrior collapsed, smoke rising from his smoldering remains.
The remaining Kaguya hesitated, their arrogance now replaced by fear. Yamamoto straightened, his flaming blade flickering ominously in the cold wind.
"Is this all the Kaguya clan has to offer?" he called, his voice cutting through the battlefield.
A final group of warriors, desperate to turn the tide, charged at him together. Yamamoto lowered his blade, exhaling deeply. Flames swirled around his feet, growing brighter and fiercer with every step he took toward them.
"Katon: Rengoku no Enjin (火遁・煉獄の炎陣, Fire Release: Purgatory Flame Formation)"
With a sweep of his sword, a wall of fire erupted in a perfect arc around him, separating the Kaguya warriors. The flames coiled and surged like living serpents, consuming some of the attackers while isolating others. Yamamoto moved through the flames with terrifying precision, cutting down each enemy one by one. Every strike of his blade left a trail of fire in its wake, his movements swift and unrelenting.
By the time the flames subsided, the frozen lake was littered with scorched bodies and shattered weapons. Yamamoto stood at the center of the carnage, his sword's flames dimming as he surveyed the battlefield.
From the ridge above, Michiko watched in awe, her voice barely above a whisper. "Incredible. He's a monster."
Yamamoto turned to face his remaining comrades, his voice calm but commanding. "The Kaguya have been humbled. Advance. Leave none standing."
With their leader's orders, the Yuki forces surged forward, their attack overwhelming the scattered remnants of the enemy. Yamamoto sheathed his blade, the last embers extinguishing as he walked away from the battlefield, the screams of the defeated Kaguya fading into the icy night.
"This should help the Hima a little"
