Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Fighting Wits and Courage with the Air
The grand hall of Wanming Temple, once a serene space housing a golden Buddha statue, had been transformed into a bustling command center for Konoha. Ninja operatives moved in and out swiftly, and the monks of the temple had been evacuated for their safety.
What Raiden Uzumaki didn't know was the gravity of the events unfolding behind the scenes. A day before his ambush, Iwagakure had launched an aggressive offensive, sending ninja troops to the borders of the Land of Grass and the Land of Rain. The swift assault crushed the Grass Country's defenses in under half a day, and similar success was achieved in the Land of Rain.
The collapse of the Grass Country allowed Iwagakure ninjas to infiltrate the Land of Fire. Their mission was to disrupt supply lines, destroy infrastructure, and harass Konoha's rear defenses. In response, the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, had mobilized a large contingent of Konoha's forces, converting Wanming Temple into a temporary front-line command post. The leadership of Konoha was divided between Hiruzen's most trusted disciples to secure the village in his absence.
In the center of the temple's main hall, Sarutobi Hiruzen stood, scrutinizing a scroll with a critical expression. Two Anbu operatives flanked him—one with jet-black hair, the other with stark white locks, their masks concealing their identities.
On one side of the room, clerks sorted through reports pouring in from the field. On the other, Konoha's Barrier Division ninjas monitored chakra signatures and movements in the surrounding area.
"Urgent report! Hanzo of the Salamander, the demigod of the Land of Rain, has sent an emissary. He seeks to ally with Konoha against Iwagakure's invasion," an Anbu reported, kneeling in the center of the hall.
"Invasion detected!" shouted a Barrier Division ninja, his voice cutting through the Anbu's report. The hall fell silent, all attention turning to Sarutobi.
"An invasion?" Sarutobi's brows furrowed. He glanced at the black-haired Anbu, who immediately vanished with a nod.
"Proceed with the details on Hanzo's alliance," Sarutobi instructed, shifting his focus back to the Anbu operative.
Meanwhile, Raiden Uzumaki had just scaled the high wall of Wanming Temple. The moment he crossed the barrier, he realized he'd been detected. Though unfamiliar with the specific enchantment, he could sense its chakra fluctuations and deduce its purpose.
"Since they know I'm here, I might as well find out who's in charge," he muttered. Without hesitation, Raiden dashed toward the strongest chakra signature in his range.
But before he could get far, a powerful and unfamiliar chakra rapidly closed in on him.
"Who's coming? This chakra is strange!" Raiden whispered, gripping the Reverse Tetragram Seal scroll tightly.
A masked figure appeared before Raiden in a blur, drawing a short blade from their back. The Anbu slashed toward him, but upon realizing the intruder was just a child, the blade shifted mid-swing to the blunt side, aiming for Raiden's neck.
"Who are you?!" Raiden exclaimed, barely managing to leap back, letting the blade graze his arm instead. The force sent him flying into a nearby wall.
As Raiden's body hit the ground, it dissipated into smoke—a Shadow Clone.
The Anbu, Uchiha Shinki, paused, staring at the dissipating clone. "Shadow Clone? A child?!" His Sharingan spun behind his mask, capturing every detail.
A scroll fell from the clone's hand as it disappeared. Shinki stepped closer, curious, and opened it with his blade. The moment the scroll unfurled, black ink spewed out in every direction.
"A sealing technique?!" Shinki leapt back as the ink exploded, covering an area tens of meters wide. The high walls and side halls of Wanming Temple vanished in a flash of white light, leaving behind a massive crater.
Inside the temple, the commotion sent shockwaves through the assembled forces.
"The barrier's broken!" a Barrier Division ninja shouted.
"An intruder!" another yelled, as panic rippled through the ranks.
Sarutobi Hiruzen emerged from the hall, flanked by Jonin and Anbu. The enormous chakra fluctuation had drawn everyone's attention. "What's happening?" he demanded, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Uchiha Shinki stepped forward, his voice steady but apologetic. "Hokage-sama, it was a sealing technique. The intruder was a red-haired child, around five years old, with visible scars on his body. I defeated his shadow clone, but before it disappeared, it dropped a scroll. I opened it without thinking, triggering the seal. My apologies for being careless."
Sarutobi frowned, his mind piecing together the details. "A powerful sealing technique… likely from the Uzumaki clan. Could it be that child?"
As the Third Hokage considered this, a figure emerged from the broken wall. It was Raiden, his face lighting up with relief when he saw the familiar uniforms of Konoha ninja.
"Great! It's really from the village! Hahaha!" Raiden exclaimed, his laughter echoing as the gathered ninjas turned to him.
"That's the boy," Uchiha Shinki confirmed, pointing toward Raiden.
Sarutobi's face softened with understanding. Raising a hand, he called out, "Stand down, everyone. This child is one of ours. Check for casualties from the earlier explosion."
An Anbu returned moments later with a report. "Hokage-sama, there are no casualties. The area was empty when the seal triggered."
Sarutobi let out a deep sigh of relief. "Fortunate. Very fortunate." Turning to Raiden, he muttered under his breath, "This boy certainly knows how to make an entrance."
Raiden, now recognizing Sarutobi and the Anbu around him, relaxed. The sight of the Uchiha clan's Sharingan had already reassured him that this was Konoha-controlled territory.
"Hokage-sama!" Raiden called out, running toward the Third Hokage. His relieved expression quickly shifted to sheepish embarrassment. "Turns out… I've been fighting wits and courage with the air this whole time."
Sarutobi chuckled lightly, shaking his head. "Welcome back, Raiden. Let's make sure you're properly looked after."
