Chapter 122: The 1st Great Ninja War

The First Great Ninja War was different from future ninja wars because this conflict focused heavily on competing for resources and land.

The Kage of each village were somewhat reckless, as they didn't fully know which village held the most power, like Reto from Sunagakure. This war was also heavily sponsored by the Daimyo, who saw it as an opportunity to solidify their positions as rulers.

Even though they had formed villages, the shinobi were still living with a clan mentality. The key difference from the past was that it was no longer clan versus clan but village versus village.

The Fire Daimyo had been replaced by the nephew of the late Daimyo. Setsuna chose not to interfere with the system out of respect for Hashirama. He wanted to wait until Hashirama passed away and the Daimyo system became irrelevant before attempting to change it.

So, he allowed the nephew to take the throne and ensured the late Daimyo's daughter and her mother lived happily in Uzushiogakure. Little did he know, however, that the nephew was far more cunning than his uncle.

Konoha became the main target because they controlled the most fertile land and housed the strongest clans.

This is why the other ninja villages temporarily allied under the banner, "Your enemy is my enemy, so we become allies."

Even with the large number of enemies, they still couldn't defeat Konoha. The reason was that Konoha possessed three of the strongest dōjutsu: the Sharingan, Byakugan, and Ketsuryūgan.

In addition, they had the Uzumaki and Senju clans, known for having the greatest chakra reserves. On top of that, they controlled two of the strongest tailed beasts: the Eight-Tails, held by Uzumaki Mito, and the Seven-Tails, held by the Aburame clan.

Chōmei, unlike Gyūki, quickly grew fond of the Aburame clan. As an insect herself, she naturally enjoyed being with an Aburame. The one who controlled Chōmei was Aburame Toka, the grandfather of the future Aburame Torune. However, there was a catch: they had to marry into either the Uzumaki or Senju clan. Toka agreed and married a Senju clan member.

In the past, Hashirama had sold the Six-Tails to Kumogakure, the Two-Tails and Five-Tails to Iwagakure, and the Three-Tails and Four-Tails to Kirigakure. Sunagakure captured Shukaku without Hashirama's help.

Looking at the battle reports, Setsuna sighed in frustration.

"Well, there's nothing I can do. This fool Tobirama didn't want to follow my advice. Now, even if Konoha wins the war, the casualties for the enemy villages will be enormous," muttered Setsuna. "At least this time, most of the fighters are adults, not children like in the Warring States Period."

---Wood Style---

Setsuna used Kamui to teleport himself to Tobirama's which currently are giving order in the border of Earth Land, where Tobirama was giving orders to the shinobi.

"Tobirama," greeted Setsuna upon arriving at his tent.

"You... Setsuna? What are you doing here?" Tobirama asked, surprised.

"Of course, I came to check if the Uzumaki clan members are alright," Setsuna replied.

"Didn't you say you didn't want to join the war?" Tobirama asked.

Tobirama had matured and no longer held the same prejudice as before, thinking that the Uchiha were just bloodthirsty. Now, he understood that what Madara did was right, and even though he hated it, he acknowledged that if Hashirama and Madara had united the villages earlier, this kind of conflict might have been prevented, possibly stopping war forever.

"My father-in-law is the Uzukage. Of course, I'll help the Uzumaki clan, even if I don't want to fully join the war," Setsuna replied.

"So, what are you doing here then?" Tobirama asked.

"I wanted to ask you about Wood Style," said Setsuna.

Tobirama frowned before asking, "Why do you want to know about Wood Style?"

"I've known you for a long time and I know your habits. Did you desecrate your brother's body?" asked Setsuna.

"You... How do you know about that?" Tobirama asked, dumbfounded.

"I knew you before Konoha was founded," replied Setsuna. "Did it fail? Did those people you experimented on turn into trees?"

Hearing this, Tobirama's eyes grew icy.

"Relax, I'm not here to fight," Setsuna reassured. "Do you remember when I told you that the Uchiha and Senju are like brothers?"

"I remember. Where is this conversation leading?" asked Tobirama.

"Well, I believe Wood Style would work better with the Uchiha clan compared to the Senju. The extreme yang chakra would balance the yin chakra in our bodies," said Setsuna.

"Are you trying to steal our kekkei genkai?" Tobirama asked.

"No, white hair. I just don't want you killing innocents by turning them into trees," Setsuna replied. "Goodbye."

He then dashed away, and after about 200 meters, he vanished, leaving Tobirama standing there.

Tobirama remained still, even after Setsuna had disappeared. It was true—he had abandoned the Wood Style project because too many people had turned into trees. But now, the idea of using an Uchiha intrigued him. Which Uchiha could he use? Suddenly, he remembered that one of his students was from the Uchiha clan.

---War Situation---

Kumogakure are the village that most confident to winning a war against Konoha, primarily because most of its ninja specialized in Lightning Chakra.

This time, they chose to send adults into battle, since Konoha had also decided to deploy adults. Kumogakure didn't want their children to face defeat against Konoha's forces.

They coordinated an attack from four different directions, alongside Sunagakure, Kirigakure, and Iwagakure.

Iwagakure was particularly motivated, remembering the terrifying power of Uchiha Madara and Hashirama Senju. With both of them now gone, they saw this as the opportunity to weaken the Senju and Uchiha clans.

The Second Tsuchikage had taken over leadership in Iwagakure, while Sunagakure remained under Reto's rule.

Tobirama, a master strategist, knew how to deploy each clan effectively. He sent the Hyuga to fight against Kirigakure, the Senju to face Sunagakure, as they were skilled at combating poison, and the Aburame, who had Chomei, to battle Kumogakure. Tobirama himself led the fight against Iwagakure, knowing that the Tsuchikage could fly.

It was first war and it shows each clan can cooperate with each other without prejudice. Kumogakure felt insulted when Konoha sent the Aburame clan to face them. They expected more, but as the war commenced, they were horrified by the power of the tailed beast. None of Konoha's forces died in the fight against Kumogakure, as Chomei decimated their ranks with Tailed Beast Bombs.

Seeing the results of the battle, Tobirama smiled. Those who dared to challenge Konoha had finally been forced to surrender.
