Chapter 9: On the Way to Suna
The scorching afternoon sun bathed the rocky terrain between Konoha and Suna. Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi moved at a brisk pace, driven by the urgency of their mission. Gaara, the Kazekage, had been kidnapped by the Akatsuki, and every moment counted. The atmosphere was tense, though Naruto tried to keep his energy up.
As they reached a crossroads along the path, a familiar figure appeared in the distance. Temari, with her large fan strapped to her back, was heading quickly toward Suna. Upon seeing the team, she waved and quickened her pace.
"Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi! What are you doing here?" she asked, visibly surprised as she approached them.
"We're on a mission to save Gaara!" Naruto replied enthusiastically, though his tone betrayed a hint of worry.
Temari nodded, her expression grave. "I was heading back for the same reason. Suna's council summoned me as soon as the news broke. I'm glad I'm not facing this alone."
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of their footsteps, a constant reminder of the urgency of their task.
Temari walked ahead, her massive fan secured on her back, her face set with determination. Naruto, usually so cheerful, seemed uncharacteristically serious.
As the group pressed forward, Temari broke the silence. "I can't stop thinking about how Gaara must feel right now… being in their hands… those monsters…" Her voice wavered slightly, a mixture of anger and worry. "I know how much Gaara has suffered… Being a jinchūriki is a burden few can understand. But now, he has friends and a village that accepts him."
Naruto, walking beside her, turned slightly toward her.
"I know how it feels," he said softly, his voice unusually serious. Temari glanced at him questioningly. "What it's like to be treated like a monster. To be alone… constantly rejected."
Temari stopped abruptly. Sakura, startled, turned back to face him as well. "What do you mean, Naruto?" Temari asked, her gaze locked onto his.
Naruto took a deep breath before responding. "I'm a jinchūriki. Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Fox, is sealed inside me. Ever since I was a kid, people looked at me with fear and disdain. They treated me like I was the fox. I was alone, just like Gaara. Maybe even worse because I smiled… but inside, it was empty."
Naruto's words fell like a thunderclap. Temari raised a hand to her mouth in surprise, her eyes quickly filling with a warmth she rarely showed. She seemed to search for the right words, but none came. "I… I didn't know," she murmured. "That explains why you understand Gaara. You're closer to him than anyone else could be."
Sakura, on the other hand, was stunned. She had known Naruto her whole life but had never taken the time to truly understand his pain. Every smile he showed, every silly joke, every attempt to get attention was, in reality, a shield to mask a deep suffering. She lowered her gaze, overwhelmed by guilt. Naruto, sensing her stare, turned slightly toward her but quickly looked away, avoiding any exchange. That simple gesture made Sakura's heart ache as she realized how blind she had been.
Temari placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder. "Gaara's lucky to have you as a friend. And maybe you're lucky to have him too. You understand each other in a way no one else could."
Naruto gave a small smile. "Maybe. But it's not fair to have to live like this. No child should carry such a burden."
The group pressed on, the silence punctuated only by the sound of their footsteps on the rocky path, each lost in thought. The warm wind blew gently, kicking up clouds of dust around them. Suddenly, Naruto felt a shiver run down his spine. "Something's wrong," he said, glancing around. Kakashi, already alert, scanned the surroundings. An unusual aura emanated from the shadows.
"Wait," Kakashi said sharply.
Before he could say more, a masked figure appeared atop a rock overlooking the path. Clad in a long dark cloak, their face concealed by a strange mask, an ominous aura surrounded them.
"Who are you?" Kakashi demanded, his voice sharp.
The figure did not respond. Instead, they threw a small object to the ground. Before anyone could react, a thick cloud of purple gas spread around them.
"Fall back!" Kakashi shouted, but it was too late. Naruto, Temari, and Sakura were quickly enveloped by the gas. Naruto tried to hold his breath, but his legs soon buckled, and he collapsed. Temari reached for her fan but lost consciousness before she could wield it. Sakura fell to her knees, struggling to stay awake but eventually succumbed.
Kakashi, relying on his training and exceptional chakra control, managed to stay upright. He fixed his Sharingan on the figure, searching for an opening to attack. "Who are you? What do you want?"
The figure didn't answer, calmly stepping toward Naruto. "Impressive," they finally said, their voice distinctly feminine and echoing eerily. "You resisted longer than I expected. But it doesn't matter."
She bent down to grab Naruto, and Kakashi, mustering his remaining strength, leapt forward to intercept her. However, before he could reach her, a powerful strike sent him crashing to the ground.
"You're resilient," the woman continued. "But it's futile. This was all planned."
Kakashi tried to rise again, but his strength failed him. His Sharingan dimmed, and he fell unconscious, powerless to save his student.
The masked figure cast one last glance around before vanishing into the shadows, Naruto unconscious on her shoulder. Sakura, Temari, and Kakashi lay sprawled on the ground, the surrounding rocks silent witnesses to the ambush.
Tension hung in the air, and the shadow of a new threat loomed over them. Naruto's fate—and that of the team—was now in the hands of destiny, as the Akatsuki always seemed to be one step ahead.
