My Seatmate is Apparently My Wife from My Past Life; She Still Loves Me in This Life as Well

39: The Turning Point of Fate

What is a past life?

Although it’s just two characters, this term is the reason why I’ve been tossed around like an unbreakable toy up to this day, and it still stirs my heart.

If I base it on myself, it’s the life right before my current one.

It’s a life that, although it’s not my current self, is undoubtedly my own life… memories, records, experiences.

Even without considering it normally, it’s clear that this is something that leans towards being spiritual or mystical, something that seems fake, aligned with fiction, and not something one would seriously use in modern times.

To be honest, it’s not that I don’t find the setting attractive, but it wasn’t worth believing in, and it wasn’t something I should be pondering over, even vaguely.

Despite that, the reason why I am seriously thinking about it now is, of course, because of Kamidama.

Kamidama──Kamidama Kagari.

I am a second-year student at Tatarano High School. She excels in both academics and sports without being annoying, and unless you have a really bad personality, you wouldn’t find any flaws in her, a perfect beauty.

To put it bluntly, she’s a flower on a high peak, a resident of another world.

A girl who would only exchange greetings at most with someone like me──that Kamidama, even though being treated as a crazy person, presses close to me, which proves more than words that she isn’t just talking nonsense.

People cannot live alone. Therefore, people are defined by the evaluations of others.

Everyone, from the moment they are born, consciously or unconsciously, accumulates these evaluations.

However, what Kamidama did was like kicking down everything she had accumulated up to a high level in one blow.

But that’s why Kamidama’s words are serious, and her actions aren’t lies.

Well, I still occasionally have the cynical thought that a large group of people might be conspiring to deceive me, but I don’t think anyone would go to such lengths for someone like me.

Moreover, Kamidama isn’t the kind of girl who would do such a thing.

That’s not because she’s a “perfect beauty as per the rumors,” but from the sides of her that I have come to see and understand through direct interaction.

She is kind, but also a bit mischievous.

She usually spoils me but is strict when necessary.

Even though she’s crazy, she can see right through me annoyingly well.

And──sometimes, she feels terribly nostalgic.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I have a reason to believe──as I said before, unless there’s objective evidence, I’m not going to change my stance.

My basic style is “not to believe,” and if that’s the reason she’s pressing me, it’s best not to deal with her at all.

That’s probably, in the end, for my sake… so that I won’t get hurt.

Trusting people is a major decision and judgment.

The more you trust, the more important that person becomes to you.

The more you rely on them, the more they become irreplaceable.

But people can suddenly disappear without any warning.

They disappear and are gone.

It’s often said that you realize the importance of something only after losing it──but if that’s the case, then it’s better not to create something important in the first place.

At least, it’s not something you should create lightly.

Therefore, I will never believe in something as ridiculous as a past life.

That’s fine──yes, this is fine.

Alright, alright. It’s okay. This is me.

This is my way──it was a certain afternoon after school when I calmly thought back and realized it was a silly excuse.

The place was the best spot in the corner classroom on the fourth floor. It was a slightly smaller than usual classroom, appointed as the room for the “Stay-At-School Club” the other day.

Of course, there are no proper activities.

There’s a request to unlock unopened classrooms, but it’s not urgent… so we took a break today.

So, in the late afternoon, I was leaning back on the chair, slumped over.

When the door of the classroom──our clubroom opened, the familiar figure of Kamidama appeared as if she had taken residence in my brain.

Her beautiful flaxen long hair swayed gently, and she smiled a bright, full smile.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Uraku. I’m sorry, I’m a little late.”

“It’s not like I was waiting. I was just hanging out in the clubroom because I was feeling lazy today.”

The tyrannical and devilish, yet childish teacher Takatsuki arbitrarily assigned us to “engage in volunteer activities,” but Tatarano High School already has a volunteer club.

Thinking that way, there are hardly any activities for us, and if there were any, they would probably be teacher Takatsuki’s private tasks.

Such as unlocking rooms or cleaning, for instance.

Unlike me, Kamidama doesn’t have any reason to waste her after-school time, and even though she’s a member, she doesn’t need to come here so diligently.

Well, if I say that, she’d probably just say, “I’m doing it because I like it.”

“You never change, always hiding your affection behind twisted words.”

“I wasn’t affectionate at all! If anything, that was more of a tsundere act.”

“Eh~? But tsundere doesn’t suit you at all.”

“Can I talk about how I’ve never been affectionate in the first place?”

It seemed like Kamidama’s view of me was filtered through some super positive lens. Isn’t she interpreting everything I say positively?

She’s too invincible…

Actually, you’re the one who’s affectionate towards me.

Not being able to read her intentions properly, my suspicion and fear outweighed my happiness.

As usual, Kamidama brought a chair and sat right next to me by the window.

The distance was too close, but the more I moved away, the more she would close the gap.

Half-hearted resistance was meaningless.

“But it feels fresh. Like when we just started dating, it’s really fun.”

“Don’t talk so happily about your fantasies about me as if they really happened. If I’m not mentally prepared, I’ll be shocked.”

“I’m saying it because it really happened. You still can’t believe──no, it’s different. You don’t want to believe it.”

“Why do you always hit the nail on the head with one blow…”

I felt like a patient whose mind was being completely analyzed. I feel like my heart is laid bare in front of Kamidama!

It’s not the time to be saying “Kyaa! How lewd!” This is seriously a level of alertness that warrants reporting.

“Well, I don’t really want to argue about that right now. In the end, it all comes down to whether I believe or not.”

“Yeah, yeah, that’s what you would say──so, let’s go see the evidence.”

“…Huh? See? What?”

“Yeah, let’s go find evidence that you and I were together in this world.”

Kamidama gently grasped my hand and smiled softly.

That charming smile, decorated with cuteness, seemed to carry a heavy, significant emotion.

“It’s okay. Meeting again in this town is surely fate. You’ll find evidence that will satisfy you.”

“Well, it’s not like I said I wanted to find evidence…”

However, it wasn’t a proposal I would reject.

If I keep thinking back and forth without ever coming to a conclusion, it’s better to face it head-on.

“Alright. Then, for a while, our activity will be uncovering the truth about the past life signal.”

“Wow, giving it such an exaggerated name makes it sound like you’re still stuck in middle school…”

“Hey, stop it! Don’t say it out loud, it’s embarrassing!”

Feeling my face heat up, I tried to hide it, but Kamidama leaned in closer, saying, “That’s what I love about you!”

Sighing deeply as I tried to escape from Kamidama, who was rubbing up against me.

Well.

Personally, I think it’s an opportunity to uncover the truth, just as the words suggest.

She claims she was my wife in a past life. Now, in this life, she’s someone who was supposed to be a stranger.

A flower on a high peak who insists she’s still my wife in this life.

The day we became desk mates was probably the biggest turning point in my life… I thought, just a little.
