Chapter 15: Trying to seize my ability is useless.
Following the directions given by that man, I ran swiftly to the park near the Fourth Tower.
Unlike the chaotic battlefield on the streets just moments before, this place was eerily quiet. The ground was littered with the bodies of my comrades, a clear indication of how dire the situation here had been. The air reeked of blood, and I had no intention of lingering.
From the state of the area, it was obvious that a fierce battle had taken place here not long ago; both the ground and the bridge above bore marks of extensive damage.
Fearing that the perpetrator of all this destruction might still be around, I preemptively drew the strange sword gifted to me by Kriz—
The moment the blade left its sheath, a forceful pressure descended from above, crushing nearby stones and bodies.
As for me? Naturally, I remained unaffected.
There was no time to let my guard down, as a new wave of attacks was already coming.
Sensing danger, I instinctively raised my sword to parry behind me, deflecting every follow-up strike based purely on intuition.
Though I couldn't see my attacker, I could sense the distortions in the air around me each time they moved.
Even if I couldn't, my instincts were precise enough to anticipate their every attack path.
Realizing that a sneak attack was useless, my opponent changed tactics, launching assaults from multiple angles, all of which I blocked with ease.
"Won't you show yourself? Or perhaps display more of your abilities?"
My opponent stayed silent, continuing with his pointless offensive.
Since he insisted... I decided to do something familiar but with a slight twist. I applied my "ability negation" effect onto my weapon, then sent it through the surrounding air with a swing of my blade.
The pale sword edge cut through the unseen space, severing some kind of intangible force.
A figure in a gray cloak, wearing a tricorn hat, appeared before me.
"Impressive, to break through two of my abilities in succession... May I have the honor of your name?"
"Dazni Enox."
Since he'd be dead soon enough, there was no harm in letting him know my name.
Looking closely, I noticed that his body was trembling slightly with excitement, as if he was eager for a fierce battle.
His hands were empty, except for the two rapiers at his waist.
Did he sheath his rapiers the moment his invisibility was broken?
"My name is Sarsuje Kwangariyev, and in the name of the Ninth Seat of the 'Extranormal,' I swear to slay you here and now—"
With a slight smile, he drew one of his rapiers and thrust it into the ground.
His violet, sinister eyes gleamed as he was engulfed in a dark green aura. From his eyes poured a strange energy, and a black flame continuously burned along the brim of his hat, all signs of his overwhelming power.
"This taste of death is specially prepared for a strong enemy like you."
In an instant, dark flames erupted from his eyes and back, transforming into countless dragon heads that spread in all directions.
The black dragon flames smashed through walls, the ground—everything around us, expanding rapidly.
Not long after, the man named Sarsuje raised his rapier high and then crushed it in his grip. With a sound like space cracking, the dragons formed by the dark flames all surged toward me as if signaled—
But no matter how powerful an ability is, if it targets me, the outcome will not change.
As expected, I remained completely unscathed after the torrent of black flames passed.
"It's useless; no one's abilities can affect me. You are no exception."
"Oh? Is that so?"
Realizing that his attack had failed again, my opponent's expression grew serious.
Gone was his previous excitement, replaced by a cautious stance.
"Then how about this!"
Sarsuje opened his left gloved hand, revealing a prism-like crystal that floated up and began to shimmer.
"This crystal will completely replicate everything about you and transform into your likeness—that is its effect—"
"It will be the perfect tool to kill you and will continue to serve me afterward..."
As he chuckled, the crystal trembled violently, then—
—the crystal shattered.
"Tch!"
"Still not giving up, are you... Oh?"
While we exchanged words, Sarsuje had teleported directly in front of me, placing his right hand on my chest.
I didn't evade, curious to see what else he had up his sleeve.
Come to think of it... his tricorn hat had fallen back where he was standing a moment ago. Did he teleport so quickly that he didn't have time to secure it?
"Do you have another trick to show?"
"To be precise, this is my true power."
A powerful thrust and a burst of blue light followed.
Hmm...
It seemed he was about to disappoint me.
"Why can't I even steal your abilities...?!"
If abilities don't work on me, he should be trying something different, like the previous assassin. This man hadn't even realized that much.
This tedious charade should end now.
Taking advantage of his moment of surprise, I stepped forward, slashing at Sarsuje's neck.
"What kind of monster are you?! What are you?!"
He hastily drew his blade to parry, but he was a fraction too slow.
"Urgh!"
"This is the end."
Blood trailed down my blade, dripping from the hilt as I stared into his dimming violet eyes. Without hesitation, I severed his head.
And thus, the battle was over.
I'd applied the "ability negation" effect to my blade earlier, just in case he tried to resurrect himself.
That aside...
Once again, there was no thrill.
Looking down at the bloodstained head on the ground, all I felt was emptiness.
Is there truly no one in this world who can give me a real challenge?
