Chapter 75 - Have We Also Started to Become Unusual?
The journey was eventful but ultimately safe.
There were still zombies lurking outside, but Chairman Meng’s benevolent yet decisive actions, along with the employees of the First Division, ensured the safety of the fruit transport team, allowing this batch of fruits to safely return to the Kechuang Building.
In addition, the operation was very successful, bringing back about thirty boxes of mineral water and many loaves of bread.
Though it was unclear why these items were in a fruit shop, it didn’t matter; Peace and Order Group Group Group Group could easily make use of them.
After moving the fruits, Meng Xu made a trip to the grassy area where Zhang Tao was buried, feeling a mix of emotions.
Back then, if it were not for Manager Zhang personally selecting him, he might still be in school, being scolded like a dog by the instructors!
Of course, being a dog wasn’t necessarily bad, but being exploited by capitalists in the company allowed for a broader horizon for him.
Time has passed, and now he was an outstanding entrepreneur in the city, while Manager Zhang had left them forever.
It’s truly a sad story.
Meng Xu observed a moment of silence, personally placing the origami cranes folded by the employees in front of Zhang Tao’s grave and writing an epitaph for him.
“Though you weren’t much of a person, you died for the company. We will always remember you—Zhang Tao, from the Sanitation and Cleaning Department of the First Division.”
The employees noticed that Meng Xu had written Zhang Tao’s name incorrectly, turning Tao (韬) into Tao (逃), meaning escape.
But no one said anything; Zhang Lunping even began to flatter Meng Xu, praising his calligraphy as top-notch and offering to buy a piece of Meng’s authentic work for 100,000 yuan.
In response, Shen Zhaozhao looked disdainful but then joined in on the bidding for an authentic piece.
She was too eager to advance.
However, such things were not encouraged by Meng Xu. He firmly declined their alternative bribery and subtly suggested that if they really wanted to express something, they could invite him for tea or meals when they received their salaries.
“Based on the current situation, floors 2-5 and 11-13 have been cleared by me. Only floors 6-10, 14, and 15 still have zombies roaming.”
After moving nearly all the fruits, Meng Xu observed the happily busy employees and began to silently contemplate.
The company’s first step was to bring the entire Kechuang Building under control.
This plan shouldn’t encounter too many problems, and it might not even require my direct involvement; Li Xiang, chi Wei, and Meng Xunpeng could handle it. Even Attorney Zhang Wei from the legal department would get involved.
Evicting zombies from the building isn’t exactly a daunting task.
Next, we need to carefully assess the current situation.
First, we need to determine the purpose of these fifteen floors.
The 15th floor will serve as the Chairman’s office for my use.
The 14th floor will be dedicated to storing food and goods, with the entire floor used for this purpose, which should be quite straightforward.
The 13th floor will be the employee rest area. Previously, it housed Attorney Zhang Wei’s law firm, which was quite wealthy, so the decor is rather nice.
The 12th to 10th floors will be designated as work areas.
The specific tasks haven’t been decided yet, but work will be assigned eventually.
The floors below the 10th will be temporarily vacant.
I plan to have zombie employees roam freely on the 1st and 2nd floors. This will serve multiple purposes: one, as a defensive buffer. If anyone tries to come over, I’ll get an immediate alert. The second point is to ease the minds of the ordinary employees.
There’s no need for them to constantly see their zombie colleagues and live in fear, which could eventually lead to psychological issues, resulting in potential compensation claims for spirit distress. That would be counterproductive.
As things stand, I see my three main priorities clearly.
First, clean up the Kechuang Building.
Second, eliminate Wanxiang International’s market share and completely bankrupt the company.
Third, find the other two lawyers.
Having solidified these strategic points, I took a deep breath, looked at the human employees, and casually said, “According to the plan, several adjustments need to be made…”
I then spoke confidently, laying out my plans and thoughts to the employees.
The employees exchanged puzzled glances upon hearing my plan.
Seriously?
Moving all that water, fruit, and food to the 14th floor would be exhausting.
But it was Meng Xu’s order. Despite their reluctance, they could only applaud and praise the Chairman for his wisdom and bravery.
“But there’s no need for that just yet. Next, I’m going to personally clean out the remaining zombies on the other floors”, I announced calmly, as if fully prepared for the task ahead.
“By the time the sun rises tomorrow, the entire building will be a part of our company!”
“Sounds great!”
Zhang Lunping was the first to clap, and soon the room was filled with thunderous applause.
I was very pleased, grabbing the bag of fried chicken cutlets and striding forward confidently, shouting out a command, “Move out!”
“This operation will also solve the problem of the unsold fried chicken cutlets!”
Hearing this, everyone paused in surprise.
Seeing their confusion, I asked, equally puzzled, “Is there an issue with that? It’s just a secondary task.”
The fried chicken cutlets were crucial for my experience points, and I couldn’t afford to be careless.
“N-no problem”, Shen Zhaozhao responded first.
The Chairman’s prior plan had sounded so normal that they almost regarded him as a regular person!
Now that they thought about it, what kind of normal person would still be thinking about company development during an apocalypse?
Could it be…
A sudden realization struck Shen Zhaozhao, causing her heart to skip a beat.
Have we become abnormal too?!
…
Finally, safety was in sight.
Sitting in the swaying bus, Wen Yuan felt an overwhelming sense of exhaustion and looked around, fighting the urge to cry.
There were about a dozen people on the bus, with soldiers holding steel guns at the front and back, vigilantly guarding against any potential zombie attacks.
These soldiers gave Wen Yuan a deep sense of security, making him feel he could finally breathe easily.
Wen Yuan, Vice Dean of the School of Architecture at Nanjiang University and a Senior Engineer at Hao Da Da Real Estate was just over thirty years old yet already a renowned architect in Heqing City.
However, no matter how famous an architect you are, it means nothing to zombies. They won’t bite you any less just because you’re an architect.
Because of work, Wen Yuan’s temporary residence was in a community on the border of Taoxian and Qinnan District. For the past six days, he had been living in constant fear, even dreaming that zombies would break down his door and tear him to pieces.
But thankfully, rescue had arrived.
Everything would get better.
Everyone on the bus was crying tears of joy, with sobs and sniffles filling the air. Wen Yuan felt a lump in his throat and wanted to cry out loud but held back.
He believed that once he reached the safe area, he would be entrusted with important responsibilities; post-disaster reconstruction was right up an architect’s alley!
Wen Yuan felt quite good and looked around the bus. Most of those rescued with him were faculty members from his university or nearby residents, which gave him a sense of comfort. The only stranger on the bus was a young man sitting behind him.
This young man looked gentle and refined, the kind of person who naturally exuded an aura of culture and amicability, easily garnering goodwill.
Noticing Wen Yuan looking at him, the young man smiled warmly and spoke enthusiastically, “Hello, Vice Dean Wen. I’m Chen Bin, a sophomore student in our School of Architecture. I recently attended your class, and your insights on agricultural architecture were truly impressive.”
“Hello, hello.”
Wen Yuan was pleasantly surprised, not expecting this young man to be one of his students. He grew even more pleased, “Do you live around here? How come I’ve never seen you before?”
“Vice Dean Wen, I don’t live nearby.”
Chen Bin shook his head and gave Wen Yuan a kind smile as he extended his hand.
Though puzzled, Wen Yuan extended his hand to shake Chen Bin’s
“Then you…”
Before Wen Yuan could finish his question, Chen Bin continued, “I specifically came to find you.”
“Hmm?”
Wen Yuan was taken aback, but soon felt a tremendous force crushing his hand, hearing a series of cracking sounds as if his bones were being shattered!
“Ah!”
Wen Yuan couldn’t help but scream, instantly attracting the attention of the soldiers on guard. One soldier immediately noticed the abnormal situation and rushed forward, shouting, “What’s going on?!”
Chen Bin paid no attention to the approaching soldier and coldly stared at the agonized Wen Yuan, speaking slowly and deliberately, “Vice Dean Wen, why didn’t you just stay at home waiting to die? Do you know how Dean Zhao died? With such deep knowledge of agricultural architecture, if you remain alive, the grand blueprint for purifying the world becomes quite complicated.”
Wen Yuan was in excruciating pain, feeling as if his hand was about to break.
At this moment, the soldier had reached Chen Bin.
Before the soldier could speak, Chen Bin suddenly moved, releasing Wen Yuan, dodging the soldier, and sprinting toward the bus driver!
“What are you doing?!”
The soldier was shocked, and quickly raised his gun. Seeing Chen Bin aiming to attack the bus driver, he decisively pulled the trigger.
“Bang! Bang!”
Two bullets hit Chen Bin accurately, causing blood to burst from his body, and tearing his flesh.
Chen Bin merely staggered, not stopping, and in an instant, reached the bus driver. With the driver’s stunned expression, Chen Bin punched him, causing the driver’s head to burst with blood and even breaking the bus’s side window!
Then, Chen Bin harshly yanked the steering wheel.
The bus immediately lost control, and within moments, the entire bus overturned, tipping fiercely to one side!
“Damn it!”
The violent motion threw the latest gun-firing soldier out, while Chen Bin, despite taking three bullets, seemed unharmed. He wiped the blood off his face and crawled out of the overturned bus.
Another soldier, also struggling out of the wreckage, instantly raised his gun and began firing at Chen Bin! If you encounter a hostile superhuman, shoot to kill! This was the order given before departure.
The retired soldier, puzzled by what that meant, now understood the reason!
A barrage of bullets turned Chen Bin into a sieve, and he collapsed to the ground, blood pouring out.
Just as the soldier was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he saw Chen Bin, who had fallen, stand up again.
But now, he looked different.
His eyes were glowing red.
Saliva dribbled from his mouth, and he let out a ferocious roar!
“Roar——!!!”
Chen Bin, after being shot to death, had turned into a zombie!
The soldier was stunned by the unbelievable sight. The zombie-fied Chen Bin quickly darted towards the soldier.
“Rat-a-tat-tat!”
Bullets fired wildly, but the zombie’s body was unnaturally tough, enduring the bullets as he charged at the soldier!
“Damn, what kind of monster is this?!”
Amidst the chaos, Wen Yuan, with a broken hand, staggered out of the wreckage, terrified.
He glanced back at the horrific zombie, his eyes filled with panic, and fled towards an alley.
Unsure of where to go, he only had one thought.
Run.
Run as fast as he could!
