My Infinitely Long End-Of-The-World Regression Journal

Chapter 12: The Lost Forest (2)

"The first things you need are stamina, strength, and endurance! That's why your first part of training will be…tons of exercise!"

Viola's voice echoed from the trees above me. I could see her lazily hopping backwards from tree to tree as if she was unaffected by gravity.

Her large breasts jiggled with every jump, momentarily distracting me. But I tried my best to stay focused, even if the gentle sway was hypnotic…

Why was I trying so hard to focus?

Because I was running. To be more specific, I was made to run by Viola in the mornings as a part of a new routine. My feet were aching and it felt like someone was stabbing me through my lungs with each breath.

Hours. It had been hours since I began this hellish run.

"You have good stamina. I can tell that you're someone who's run a lot, disciple. I do have qualms about that habit of yours, but…ah well! We'll beat that cowardly nature out of you, yet! Pushups!"

As soon as she said the last part, I dropped to the ground, all of the sweat dripping from my body as I began to force myself through an agonizing set of 100 pushups.

Run, talk, do random exercises mid-run and then keep running. All exercises were one set of 100, unless specified otherwise.

This routine had been repeating for at least a week. At least, I had counted the sun setting and rising at least seven times by now.

My phone had already died after the first night in the forest, so there was no way of telling. Strange that it died so quickly, but still.

Viola stopped smiling, staring down at my struggling, sweating form with a drill instructor's permanent scowl.

"Get up and start running! You did those pushups too slow! We're still in the beginner phase, after all!"

Viola had gone from a slightly quirky, unique girl, to a harsh, hard-pushing master. She was really becoming more and more of a Sect Leader.

And here I was, the poor pupil forced to train until near-vomiting.

I didn't know whether to be happy or sad that we were barely eating over these past few days. At least it meant my stomach didn't have anything to heave up.

"Your response?" Viola shouted impatiently, breaking the train of my thoughts.

"Yes, Sect Leader!"

"Huhuhu…good."

She giggled in satisfaction at my fast, determined reply, reverting back to her 'normal self'.

Regardless of how hard the training was, I didn't plan on giving up. I didn't know how far I could get in the two months until the world ended, but I would try my damnedest.

I had to.

It wasn't comfortable, thinking of this life as a throwaway. I had never thought of my life like that. I always tried living like it was the last one, and on my second Regression, I had really tried to keep it that way.

Viola scowled again, as if sensing my wavering thoughts. I felt a chill run down my spine before the words came out of her beautiful, yet terrifying lips.

"Now, 1,000 pushups! Do them faster than the last set of 100! Then another ten hours sprint!"

"Y-yes…"

Even with MAXX determination, this training was hard as hell.

I was wet.

Okay, that just sounded wrong. To be more specific, I was soaking wet. Water was pouring all over my body.

I was currently shivering, with all of my clothing on, sitting under a harsh-flowing waterfall. I could barely hear anything over the sound of rushing water.

I could halfway see Viola standing on a nearby boulder somewhere near, watching me like a hawk. It was terrifying, knowing that I couldn't see her eyes.

"Focus, mental training!"

Whenever I was done with the hell that was her version of light physical exercise, Viola would pull me to the side for 'mental training'. Like we were in an old martial arts movie, she'd sit me under a freezing cold waterfall, forcing me to adopt a Lotus position and keep it.

My teeth were chattering. I thought that only happened in cartoons, but here I was, experiencing something near hypothermia.

"Just by meditating, you won't be able to do what I do. However, an important part of tapping into it the power I want to teach you is going to be keeping a steady, calm mind…"

Viola suddenly stood in front of me, moving faster than my meager senses could perceive. She bent over me, and again, I could see those terrifying eyes of hers.

Maybe she had no idea that she herself was a huge distraction…her constantly-bouncing breasts jiggled enticingly in front of my face, too. Thankfully, the cold water was keeping my brain from heating up too much.

"Like that!" She flicked me in the head, causing my head to swing back from the seemingly simple impact.

"Hey! What the hell Vi-"

I felt the aura of a predatory animal, and found myself calming down almost immediately.

'She's really particular over this made up sect setting…'

"...apologies, Sect Leader."

Viola huffed, folding her arms across her chest. She turned around, her wide hips swaying as she walked through the shallows of the river created by the waterfall.

"You're full of distractions. I don't know if it's because you genuinely have a lot to think about, or if you're just someone that gets sidetracked really easily…at any given time, you're thinking way too much."

Viola exposed a glaring weakness of mine without even giving me the chance to retort, wagging her finger as if offering some old wisdom.

Oddly enough, she looked and sounded more displeased about it than me.

"You're honestly already pretty strong. For a human, that is. But raw physical strength isn't your problem. Strength can be trained incrementally over time before reaching its' peak…but your mental strength is what will allow you to surpass your limits. That is something that may not even rise through training. The waterfall training will help you focus, but it's up to you whether or not you can actually make any use of it, disciple."

'...I don't think I'll ever get used to the switch between inane sect rambling and weirdly reasonable sounding advice.'

To be frank, I still didn't understand anything. The power that Viola wielded without any ability, did it seriously have something to do with this old-fashioned training you'd see in a martial arts movie? I didn't know or understand. She was the master here, after all.

"Distractions!"

She immediately closed the distance and flicked me in the head again with the force of a rock being thrown at it.

I didn't even let out an exclamation of pain, I just grit my teeth and tried clearing my mind of any distractions…

I was now following Viola through the lost forest, after almost two weeks of this routine. Ragged, bloody, wet, and barely clothed (considering most of my convenience store worker outfit had been torn apart.)

I was seriously at my limit at this point.

"S-Sect leader, this training is…insane."

I muttered, feeling like I was barely alive as I looked over at her. She was as carefree and cheerful as ever, and just smiled at my words.

"It is, but it's necessary. For someone like you, it'll be impossible to learn these sorts of techniques easily. But…you have a lot of time. This training will definitely be useful to you…eventually!"

'There she goes with the vague statements again…is it all just a part of her fantasy, or does she seriously know I can regress? Frankly, seeing those eyes…I've avoided talking to her about it.'

"Sure. I'll work hard, Sect Leader…"

But this is all I had to hang on to. A faint, pathetic hope that I could use this torture that could barely be called training to make myself stronger.

"So, there's one last part of your training that I forgot to mention. Well, you should've expected something like this anyway, but no biggie if you didn't!"

I was terrified by her simply-said joyful statement. I couldn't even think anything before she confirmed that fear.

"You'll be fighting!"

"Fighting?! Seriously?! In this condition?!"

I couldn't help but have an outburst. I looked like a shambling corpse, and she wanted me to fight.

Viola waved away my voice like a fly, pouting at my outburst.

"Don't yell so loud…or I'll make you do 10,000 situps next running session."

I immediately shut my mouth. Viola chuckled, before continuing.

"Nice and quiet~! Now then, as I was saying, you're going to be fighting. But, of course, it wouldn't do if I just had you fight any old forest creature. Some of them would wipe the ground with you in an instant. So, being considerate of my disciple, I decided to bring you a weaker one…"

I let out a relieved breath.

'At least she's being a little more thoughtful instead of just trying to push me to the brink of death…'

"Well, disciple, just so you know…I won't step in to help you. I mean, if you can't fight something like this, then it's honestly hopeless."

Viola shook her head. For some reason, those words made my nervousness return tenfold.

"Umm…Sect Leader…Master?"

Viola brought a hand to her chin, as if the second title had given her room for thought. "Hmm…Master, Master…yes, Master sounds catchier. Call me Master from now on!"

'So fickle…'

"Alright, well, Master. Out of curiosity, just…what will this 'weaker' one be?"

I could think of many things in this jungle. The Abnormalities here seemed to all be things you could imagine residing in a forest. I was sure that I had even seen some mythical and legendary beasts around…from a very, very, very far distance.

Viola smiled at my question. Yes, that same, innocent joyful smile that she had when about to announce something 'fun'.

'Ahhh…I'm going to die, aren't I?'

The ground around us shook, leaves rustling and animals scattering as the entire forest seemed to be consumed by a localized earthquake.

"Good luck, disciple!"

Viola disappeared before I could even say anything. I couldn't even look to see her disappear, as a gigantic shadow towered over me. Something forced its' way through the trees, looming.

Heavy breaths and puffs of air filtered through the leaves. Incredibly sharp claws coming from short arms. A height that reached up almost as high as the gigantic, mystical trees that composed the whole Lost Forest.

Scaly skin. Twitching eyes. A gigantic, tooth filled maw.

"-----!"

A roar filled the entire area, the voice alone nearly strong enough to knock me off of my feet.

"...just kill me now."

What I faced was not a mystical creature, a legendary being, a Pixie, or any sort of truly supernatural thing.

No.

What stood before me, ready to tear me apart…was a supposedly extinct creature. If it were to be compared to the insanities that lived within this forest, then it really was on the 'weaker' side.

"----!"

It roared once more, before charging straight at me with hunger and pure carnage behind its' eyes.

It was the king of nature in one of the world's past states, returning to where it shouldn't be.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex.
