Chapter 38 - I Got Unfairly Beaten by a Carp
Bang!
A bullet was fired, accompanied by a burst of red flame from the gun’s muzzle.
“Urgh.”
A brief groan echoed, marking one kill in the log.
The viewers were stunned. It was a short peek lasting barely 0.1 seconds, or even less.
A single remaining bullet and the short time left on the clock. And with that one bullet, I pierced through the enemy’s head. The viewers watching could only stare in amazement.
– “Whoa, damn, what did I just witness?”
– “That was insane.”
“……Phew…”
Leaving the dead enemy behind, I defused the device that was covered in pings.
“Aaaah…”
After securing three rounds with difficulty, I stretched and noticed Strawberry lying upside down, staring at me.
With a light step, I went over to the bed, picked up Strawberry, and placed her on the desk. Standing on the bed, only staring at me, she looked a little pitiful, and it seemed like she was curious, so I figured she deserved a bit of a show.
“Meow?”
Strawberry wandered around on the hard desk, which felt very different from the bed, lightly tapping a mouse that was slightly smaller than her.
“Hehe… Strawberry, make your choice.”
As the round switched, and I was in the operator selection screen, I left the mouse in front of Strawberry, giving her the choice.
Strawberry circled the mouse for a moment, then boldly climbed on top of it.
Perhaps proud of herself for conquering the only thing in the house smaller than her, Strawberry posed like a fierce predator that had just scored a victory, then jumped down.
Unable to hold back a fond smile, I chuckled to myself before glancing back at the monitor.
“……Whoa…”
In my pick screen was “Amarung.”
Well, I’d said I’d play whatever Strawberry picked. And since I’d already gotten that strange Carp skin earlier, I decided to stick with Amarung.
With little time left, I quickly equipped the shotgun, but…
I couldn’t switch out my secondary weapon.
No way! Double shotguns? Isn’t that a bit much?
Feeling a bit dazed by the unplanned double shotguns, I began scouting for an entry point using my drone.
Through the drone, I found out the site was on the first floor, with two roaming enemies and three on defense.
There weren’t any operators who set traps, so ideally, if I used Amarung’s special ability to enter through the second or third floor, cleared the roamers, and pressured the site with my team, that would be the best play. But armed with an odd Carp shotgun instead of an LMG, I had no such choice.
After the droning, I put my phone down, taking a deep breath as I admired the white and red shotgun blending harmoniously before me.
“……Strawberry… is this even…”
Looking down for Strawberry, I sighed when I found her fast asleep.
I knew she’d come down to my lap while I was droning, but I didn’t expect her to fall asleep so quickly.
But with it being this late, I figured I might as well win this game and head to bed, too, and pulled out my special ability.
The hook—a tool that could propel me over windows and rooftops or break through barricades.
Amarung’s ability was useful in its own way, but… but…
I aimed the hook at the second-floor window in front of me.
Whizz… snap!
In an instant, the hook connected me to the window, lifting me up into the air.
Crash!
I shot through the window and began sprinting.
Even if there were enemies around, I couldn’t take them down at a distance with the double shotguns.
My best option was to keep moving quickly, approach the enemy, or just ignore them and keep pushing forward.
Chup! Chup! Chup! Chup!
Bullets fired with cute sounds from the red Carp shotgun, chipping away at the floor above the site.
Chup!
I broke through an unreinforced trap door and waited briefly.
Tatak..!
I was making all this noise directly above the site, so there was no way they wouldn’t try to suppress me.
Bullets started coming up through the floor beneath me.
As I waited in silence, slightly away from the trap door, I could hear our team engaging the enemies on the first floor, and faint footsteps approaching from the second floor.
Tadadak……
The footsteps grew closer, stopping as I shifted my stance.
I adjusted my position cautiously, trying to keep my movements as quiet as possible, but there was a reason the enemy had stopped.
Bang!
A shock grenade exploded beside me, shattering the wall I was using for cover and filling my ears with a deafening ringing.
Ignoring the noise, I turned the mouse as far as I could, twisting my aim unnaturally.
My screen jerked violently from the blast, making soundplay impossible, but I already knew—wherever my crosshair pointed, the enemy would be there.
Drrrr… chup!
Since the enemy team had already located me and tossed the grenade, they began shooting quickly.
However, they didn’t know what weapon I had.
The enemy was at a distance short enough that he couldn’t dodge any damage from the grenade.
So, in close quarters, who has the upper hand—a standard rifle or a shotgun?
Just shoot first, shoot more, shoot dangerously—and you’ll win.
“Ugh…”
With a pained groan, the enemy fell.
But I wasn’t in great shape either. I’d taken more risks and shot more recklessly, but I hadn’t been the fastest.
My health had dropped into the single digits, and my problems didn’t end there.
Tadadadak…!
There were two roamers.
“Sss…”
With barely any health left and the approaching footsteps growing louder, I quickly started considering my options.
Should I fight? No, with my low health and them knowing I had a shotgun, they wouldn’t let me close in.
Then, could I escape through the window I’d entered from…?
As I scrambled for ideas, I noticed the trap door I’d broken earlier in my field of vision.
The ringing in my ears had faded. All I could hear now were the rapidly approaching footsteps and the sounds of my team and the enemy clashing below.
“……”
A new option had appeared. I took it without hesitation.
I jumped through the trap door.
Dudududu! Tatatatatata! Clack…
Among the loud gunfire was a faint landing sound.
Although my teammates had lost a lot of health, they recognized my tactic and increased their fire, allowing me to sneak to a corner of the enemy site unnoticed.
Tatatatatat—
This time, my hands moved quickly over the keyboard, tapping away as though I were the Doctor pounding at his own keys.
A moment later, the shrill alarm blared, signaling that the diffuser had been planted.
The enemy team, flustered by the sudden diffuser in their site, hurried to reestablish control and locate me.
…Chup!!
Lying prone, blending into the floor, I waited until the approaching footsteps were in range, then quickly rose and pulled the trigger.
“…Phew…”
It was inevitable that I would die.
The remaining roamer descended from the second floor, and the enemy team closed in on my isolated position.
Though I’d taken down two enemies, it wasn’t just that.
The enemy team surrounding me meant my team could enter.
With the clock ticking down and knowing that enemies were already in their site, the enemy team couldn’t think clearly.
Although they killed me, my team avenged me.
After the game ended, I watched as the screen gradually displayed my rank increase.
From Platinum 2, my score climbed steadily back up to Platinum 1.
Seeing that I’d returned to my previous rank, I slowly took off my headset and took a sip of water.
“Phew… I’m back…”
Stretching deeply, I closed the game.
Vrr…vrr…
As the noisy hum of the computer quieted, I noticed the streaming screen and chat room still displayed, prompting me to put my headset back on.
– “Now *that’s* gaming.”
– “Wow, so clean. It’s like you died, but you didn’t. Seriously.”
– “Plat 1! Congrats!!”
Clack… tatak…
Unlike my gameplay, I returned to my usual chatty self, opening Notepad for a brief conversation with my viewers.
= I’m ending it here for today… I’m tired.
– “Nooo”
– “The game’s over, but can you turn on the cam, at least…?”
= I’m about to end the stream anyway. Besides, there’s nothing interesting to see.
– “Noooo, it’s super fun. Please turn on the cam.”
=………
After a pause, with a clicking sound, I turned on the camera.
My half-closed red eyes and sluggish movements conveyed my exhaustion, with the warmth of the cat on my lap only intensifying my sleepiness.
“Um… I’m going to sleep now… Let’s chat later… ahem…”
I gently lifted the little white fluff on my lap, placed her on the bed, and waved at the camera as Baraa ended the stream.
