Chapter 2 - The World Has Been Unfair to Me
“…..Ugh….”
I was sure I had collapsed in terrible pain and passed out.
I wanted to open my eyes and check where I was, but they wouldn’t open properly. I barely managed to lift my heavy eyelids.
The world was blurry since my vision wasn’t focused properly.
Is this…..a hospital?
I had seen a ceiling with this pattern before. It reminded me of the time when my past self, who had foolishly overworked himself to make money, collapsed and saw this same ceiling.
That was…..more than six months ago, so my memory was a bit hazy, but I still remembered my family’s reaction.
My mom and younger sibling had teary eyes, my dad was silently bowing his head, and my youngest sibling was smiling and waving.
After that day, I drastically reduced my part-time jobs and tried to adjust things moderately without pushing myself too hard.
But why? I had collapsed and was now in the hospital again.
“Ugh…”
My head started throbbing, so I stopped thinking deeply and just lay still.
I turned my head to look around, but I didn’t see any other patients. A private room. My brain quickly started calculating the costs. The sudden reality of it made me want to go to the bathroom.
Barely managing to move my arms and legs, which hadn’t been used in a long time and didn’t move as easily as I wanted, I placed my feet on the floor.
Soon after, I stretched my legs and raised my body, getting out of bed.
I barely managed to control my wobbly body and balance myself, but then I noticed something at my feet.
It was my sister.
The slight dark circles under her eyes bothered me. I was causing my family so much worry; maybe I should just get a job, I thought, as I held onto the wall and slowly walked toward the door.
My whole body, not just my legs, lacked strength. I must have been lying down for quite a long time. Feeling both sorry and grateful to my sibling, I slowly pushed the door open.
Once there was enough space for me to pass through, the thin hospital gown brushed against the door as I stepped outside.
The hospital was still partly dark as if it were nighttime, but it wasn’t particularly scary.
After walking down the long corridor for a bit, I found the bathroom. I opened the door with the blue stick figure drawn on it and went inside, where I saw someone using the facilities.
“…Um…? Hmm?! What the… Miss, this isn’t where you’re supposed to be…!”
He was wearing the same hospital gown, indicating we were in a similar situation, but he was frantically waving his hands, gesturing for me to leave.
What’s going on?
I tilted my head slightly, and the man, looking frustrated, spoke again, still avoiding direct eye contact.
“Uh…this is…the men’s bathroom….should I say this in English…?”
Ah, I’d experienced this before. Once, I had let my hair grow long because I was too lazy and busy to cut it. When it reached shoulder length, I got hit on by a man after finishing a part-time job and heading home.
Even after seeing my face.
When I opened my mouth and said I was a man, the guy was startled and awkwardly walked away. It was a funny but embarrassing memory.
Come to think of it, my hair was a bit long before I collapsed. It’s understandable if he was mistaken.
Turning my back on the still-flustered man, I walked out of the bathroom. I figured I could use it after a bit more time had passed, so I struggled to walk back to my room.
– Huh..? Oh…? Oppa? Where are you? Oppa..!
Just as I was about to open the door, I heard my sibling’s panicked voice from outside. Her voice echoed through the corridor as she urgently called for me. I felt awkward, hand on the doorknob, as my sibling suddenly swung the door open with force.
“Uh…Minyoung…I’m here…”
For some reason, my voice came out slightly higher than usual. I thought I had misheard, so I tried speaking again.
“Hmm? Ah? Hmm, hmm…”
My voice still came out as a high-pitched female voice. Tilting my head in confusion, I noticed something strange.
Had my sibling always been this tall? The last time I measured myself, I was 170 cm. At one point, it read 169.9 cm, which made me very angry, but I measured again and confirmed it was exactly 170 cm, which made me happy.
My sibling was quite tall, around 164 cm…? People often mistook us for sisters or thought I was the younger one. I should probably tell her that wearing high shoes too often isn’t good for her ankles.
With that thought, I tried to check my sibling’s shoes.
What the, why…..can’t I see my feet…? Did I gain weight? That couldn’t be. Until recently, I was on the verge of moving from underweight to a normal weight. So what was blocking my view?
“…Oppa…..”
“Hmm? What’s wrong? I think I’m fine now. I feel perfectly healthy.”
Pushing aside my doubts for the moment, I looked at my sibling’s face. I was still looking up at her, but more importantly, I needed to wipe away the tears falling from her eyes.
“It’s okay, oppa isn’t dead. A lot of strange things are happening, but it’ll be fine.”
Using the long sleeve of the hospital gown, I wiped away her tears.
“…Oppa… No matter what you look like…..I’ll be okay…”
Suddenly, my sibling said something strange and hugged me. She must have been through a lot of emotional distress. I patted her back, and after a while, she calmed down.
“Feeling better?”
“Yeah…..Oppa…come inside for a moment…”
Following my sibling, I went back into the hospital room and sat on the bed.
After hesitating for a long time, she finally spoke.
“Oppa…..you’ve turned into a girl….”
Huh? I knew my sibling wasn’t the type to make outrageous jokes. As I gathered my thoughts, piecing together everything that had happened so far, my head started throbbing again. Just then, someone knocked on the door.
“……You’re awake…?”
A young doctor in a white coat, panting as if he had rushed over, came into the room and carefully closed the door.
“Phew….Hello. I’m Choi In-hyuk, your attending physician, Lee Su-yeon.”
The man who introduced himself as Choi In-hyuk bowed his head once and stared intently at my face.
“Uh…is there a problem…?”
I was worried that it might be serious, so I asked tentatively, only to hear the answer I didn’t want to hear.
“Yes. There’s quite a serious problem… Are you aware of the changes in your body?”
“Uh…no…? I’ve shrunk a bit…and something seems to have grown…?”
Looking down, I still couldn’t see my feet, and something was definitely blocking my view.
“Do you have a mirror…?”
“I…do…”
At the doctor’s question, my sibling rummaged through her large bag and took out a small hand mirror.
The doctor reached out to grab the mirror she handed over, but his hand only caught air.
“…Is this…really the right thing to do…?”
“It’s better to know as soon as possible, don’t you think?”
Although my sibling didn’t look convinced by the doctor’s words, she cautiously handed over the mirror.
What could have happened to me for things to be this serious? By this point, my curiosity was piqued. Struggling to move my legs, I snatched the hand mirror from the doctor.
“…!”
I had let my guard down, mumbling some cliché line in my head as I checked the mirror.
“……..”
The room was filled with silence and tension for a while.
Staring at the mirror, making strange faces, brushing my hair, and touching my face, I finally spoke.
“Uh…Doctor…?”
“Y-yes..?”
“Um…I think I’m having some hallucinations and hearing things…”
What was reflected in the mirror couldn’t possibly be me. How could a person have snow-white silver hair and eerie red eyes?
Sure, maybe one person like that could exist in the world, but it couldn’t possibly be me.
This must be because I hit my head.
That must be it. Yes, yes.
“……It’s real….”
“Sorry?”
Distracted by my thoughts, I didn’t catch what the doctor said. Still speaking in the high-pitched voice that hurt my ears, I asked again.
“It’s real…..silver hair, red eyes….”
Wait, is this some sort of prank? Maybe my sibling, who’s into internet and TV culture, had arranged something like this.
Breaking my head, putting a white wig on me, slipping in red-colored lenses, renting a single room, and teaming up with a doctor to pull a prank on me. The video would go up with a title like Tricking My Brother…
No, that can’t be.
Why?
The first question was: why? There was no one who could answer that question. I had just been living my life, preparing to spend Christmas at my sibling’s house, eat together, watch my favorite show, and drink with my friends.
If things had gone according to plan, it would’ve been the perfect day. Finishing work early, meeting up with old friends and my sibling, and finally seeing my favorite streamer’s face reveal after half a year of waiting.
Why
had things turned out like this? Just as my head filled with such questions, a loud sound echoed in the quiet private room.
“Oh my god…!! Su-yeon…are you okay?!”
My mom burst through the door holding the youngest sibling, her face a mix of shock, worry, and confusion, with tears streaming down her cheeks.
