Chapter 26
Chapter 26. Let’s Find a Water Source (1)
In the morning, as I fumbled my way out of the tent, I noticed a faint mist hanging in the air. Wearing a short-sleeved shirt and shorts, I felt a slight chill.
It’s not yet the season for autumn leaves, but the seasons are definitely changing.
“Mmm, mmm~”
I stretched as hard as I could.
I’ve stayed here a few times now, and each time, I’ve noticed how relaxed my body feels. Light, you could say.
“Haah, the air tastes good too.”
Back when I lived in a city apartment, mornings often felt sluggish. Compared to that, even though there’s nothing here and it’s inconvenient, being able to greet such a refreshing morning feels like a blessing.
I headed to the bathhouse to brush my teeth and wash my face. It’s a relief to have plenty of water to use.
After that, I started preparing breakfast. I took out the raw eggs and ham from the cooler.
The early mornings have started to get a bit chilly, but the afternoons are still warm. I can’t keep perishables in the cooler forever. Maybe buying a six-pack of eggs was the right call.
“…Maybe I should consider raising chickens or something in the future.”
I’d like to try eating freshly laid eggs too.
Thinking about that, I started preparing the fire. I did buy plenty of solid fuel, but maybe I should learn to cook with firewood instead.
I took out the skillet from the backpack that holds all my camping gear. I drizzled a little oil into it, cracked an egg over the ham, and made a ham and egg.
Meanwhile, I boiled water in the cooker. I placed a stick of instant coffee into a stainless steel mug. As I poured the hot water, the aroma of coffee filled the air.
Ground coffee beans probably smell completely different, but I don’t have any right now. If I did, it might feel like a luxurious moment. Like those ‘Can you tell the difference?’ ads. Oh, but wasn’t that an instant coffee commercial?
Next, I toasted some bread lightly on the grill. I remembered someone’s video where the bread was burnt to a crisp, so I kept a close eye on it as it toasted.
“Mmm, looks good.”
I placed the ham and egg, seasoned with salt and pepper, on top of the bread.
“Let’s eat.”
I took a big bite of the ham.
“So good.”
I kept going until I reached the yolk, and the still-runny center oozed out.
“Ah, ah, what a waste.”
I licked the yolk off my fingers and quickly finished the bread.
I took a sip of coffee and looked around again. The mist had already cleared, and the blue sky was visible. As I gazed up absentmindedly, I wondered if it would still be hot today.
“…What about water?”
Earlier, I used a 2-liter bottle of water, but I only brought two bottles with me. To keep my load light, I had to cut back on other supplies.
I had vaguely assumed that water would be easy to come by.
“The bathhouse water isn’t for drinking…”
I glanced toward the bathhouse. Maybe, in this otherworldly setting, it could be used as drinking water. But.
“That’s one thing, this is another, right?”
I could use it for washing dishes or laundry, but drinking it felt off.
“Ah, maybe Tateru-kun has something?”
I placed the mug on the mini-table and pulled out the tablet I had left in the tent.
