Chapter 26: I, the Geo Archon Morax with 2.1 Billion Mora, Have Joined a Chat Group [26]
The history of this world feels like a cruel joke played by the gods.
Just as nations worldwide were making strides in industrial development, a sudden and inexplicable phenomenon brought calamity to human civilization.
In the year 19XX, the first Enemy of Humanity appeared.
No one remembers its appearance; all records were destroyed. Yet those who know the truth recall how terrifyingly powerful it was.
Cities that had taken millions of people decades to build were utterly annihilated in a single night.
The humans within those cities were slaughtered like insects—stripped of dignity, reduced to nothing.
But this monstrous being wasn't an alien, nor a creature from another world.
It was simply a human who had awakened a unique ability.
From that point onward, children born with extraordinary powers began appearing across the globe.
For these individuals, whose powers seemed akin to magic, the laws and moral codes of ordinary humans no longer held any weight.
An invisible man would infiltrate women's bathhouses, committing unspeakable acts. A winged humanoid would take to the skies and hijack planes. Telekinetics with immense power suppressed police forces and destroyed military units.
In response, nations established countermeasures to deal with these superpowered individuals. Governments sought to recruit them for military purposes and create organizations of powered enforcers to maintain peace and order.
At first, these initiatives showed promise.
But the cooperation quickly fell apart.
On one hand, many superpowered individuals were arrogant, looking down on ordinary people. On the other hand, some resented being treated as mere experimental subjects.
Thus began a pursuit for a shift in societal hierarchy—
An indescribable rebellion, or perhaps a revolution, erupted.
After five years of blood-soaked conflict, humanity emerged victorious.
The aftermath of the war saw nations and societies adapt. Over the next hundred years, policies and mindsets changed.
Today, governments openly acknowledge the existence of superpowered individuals, segregating them into training facilities—often disguised as schools—where they are isolated under the pretext of preparation.
These individuals, summoned by their governments, train day and night to combat creatures known as Enemies of Humanity.
And most citizens wholeheartedly believe this narrative.
In a vast, empty hall, a lone girl stood in the center.
A few shadowy figures, members of the Committee, watched her from the dark corners, their laughter low and chilling.
One of them spoke in a calm, gravelly voice:
"Eliminate the Enemies of Humanity hiding on the island. This mission is our nation's most closely guarded secret."
"Failure is not an option. Can you handle it?"
"If your failure leads to an alliance among these superpowered individuals, it's not just our country that will be destroyed—this entire world will fall to ruin."
"A world ruled by superpowered individuals means the end of humanity."
"Can you do it?"
The young girl didn't flinch at the enormity of the task.
She widened her eyes, carefully memorizing the image of the targets displayed on the large screen.
Then, in the calmest voice, she recited a grim statement:
"First, I need information."
"Killing all of them—I understand the mission. But what abilities do the enemies possess? If I knew the powers of all the students, completing the mission would be much easier."
One of the Committee members nodded approvingly.
"We documented their abilities when they were recruited. However, to avoid raising suspicion, we didn't enforce rigorous testing. We've organized their powers into a database and even calculated the potential casualties each ability could cause."
"But remember, don't blindly trust the data. Their abilities are unpredictable. As they grow, their powers may evolve.
"Once, we attempted to eliminate an individual who could manipulate microorganisms within his body. When we made our move, he released a deadly virus into the air, forcing us to obliterate an entire town with bombs."
"We also tried luring them into mass gatherings under the guise of training, intending to execute them en masse. Instead, they banded together, resulting in even more deaths."
"After years of research and experimentation, we've concluded that sending a trained assassin like you into their ranks is the most effective method."
"I understand. I will kill every last Enemy of Humanity. Even if it means going to hell in the end, I will not hesitate."
Hearing this solemn vow, the Committee members exchanged smiles in the shadows.
Were they pleased? Or mocking her?
Nana couldn't discern any emotion behind their grins.
"We look forward to your performance."
"You truly are Tsuruoka's most loyal hound."
"Hahaha~! I like your spirit."
Their disjointed words melded into a cacophony, crashing over Nana like a tidal wave.
Amid the imaginary sea of chaos, the faces of the superpowered individuals she had killed appeared, their lifeless forms sinking and resurfacing in the murky depths.
"Whew~~! Ha... ha..." Nana sat up abruptly in her bed, her chest heaving violently.
The dream—the memory—had left her heart pounding.
"I remembered something terrible."
She faced the mirror, running her fingers through her short, pink hair before habitually tying it into twin tails. Forcing a goofy grin, she practiced her usual carefree expression.
After maintaining the smile for about a minute, she let it fade. Then, with an upbeat stride, she left her room.
"Who am I going to kill today? Which Enemy of Humanity will it be?"
