Chapter 37: Goodbye, Kitten (37)
The crisp autumn air carried a bittersweet note as Haruto and Aiko walked toward the vet clinic. In Aiko's arms was Sora, the stray kitten they had rescued months ago. Over time, Sora had become a symbol of their friendship, a constant source of joy during their adventures. But now, the day they had dreaded had finally arrived—a kind family had come forward to adopt Sora.
Aiko cradled the kitten tightly, her eyes glistening. "I'm happy she'll have a real home, but... it's so hard to let her go."
Haruto walked beside her, his hands in his pockets. "She deserves a good family, Aiko. And we've done everything we could to get her ready for this moment."
Sora mewed softly, as if sensing the somber mood. Aiko stroked her fur, her lips trembling with a faint smile. "I know you're right. I just didn't think saying goodbye would feel this heavy."
The vet clinic was a small, cozy building with a welcoming atmosphere. As they entered, a friendly receptionist greeted them and gestured toward a waiting area. A young couple sat nearby, whispering to each other with eager smiles. Haruto guessed they were Sora's new owners.
The couple noticed them and stood up, introducing themselves warmly. They spoke about how excited they were to welcome Sora into their family, how they had already prepared a cozy bed and plenty of toys.
"She'll have the best care," the woman said, her eyes shining with sincerity.
Aiko nodded, holding back tears. "She's a very special kitten. Please take good care of her."
The couple promised they would, their voices gentle and reassuring.
When the time came to hand Sora over, Aiko hesitated. She knelt down, holding Sora close one last time. "You're going to have a wonderful life, Sora," she whispered. "Be happy, okay?"
Haruto crouched beside her, giving the kitten a gentle pat. "You'll always be our little adventure buddy," he said with a small smile. "Take care of yourself."
Aiko finally placed Sora in the woman's arms. The kitten looked back at them, her big eyes full of curiosity and trust. As the couple thanked them and walked out, Aiko watched until they disappeared from view.
The walk home was quiet at first. Aiko's footsteps were slow, her head bowed. Haruto stayed by her side, giving her the space to process her emotions.
"I feel like a part of me just walked away," Aiko said softly, breaking the silence.
Haruto glanced at her, his expression thoughtful. "It's because you care so much. That's what makes you special, Aiko. Sora will always be a part of us, no matter where she is."
She looked up at him, her eyes searching his. "Do you think she'll remember us?"
"I know she will," he replied firmly. "We were her first family. And she'll carry that with her forever."
When they reached the park, Aiko stopped and sat down on a bench beneath their favorite cherry blossom tree. The branches were bare now, the petals long gone, but the place still held a sense of comfort.
Haruto sat beside her, pulling out a small sketchbook from his bag. He flipped to a page and showed it to her—a drawing of Sora curled up under the tree, her tail wrapped around her tiny paws.
"I drew this a while ago," he admitted. "I thought we'd want something to remember her by."
Aiko's eyes widened, and a smile broke through her sadness. "It's perfect, Haruto. Thank you."
She traced her fingers over the sketch, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Maybe we can start a scrapbook," she suggested. "Fill it with all the memories we've made with her."
Haruto nodded. "That sounds like a great idea. And who knows? Maybe one day we'll visit her and see how she's doing."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Aiko felt a sense of peace settle over her. Letting go was never easy, but she knew in her heart that they had done the right thing.
Sora might be gone from their lives, but her presence would always linger in the memories they had created together. And as long as they held onto those memories, she would never truly be gone.
"Goodbye, Sora," Aiko whispered, gazing at the sky. "Thank you for everything."
Haruto placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "She's off to a new adventure, just like we are. And no matter what, we'll always have each other."
Aiko smiled through her tears, knowing he was right. Together, they could face anything—even the goodbyes.
