Chapter 35: Birthday Surprise (35)
The days leading up to Haruto's birthday were filled with whispers and secretive smiles among his friends. Aiko, in particular, seemed more energetic than usual, often disappearing during recess and dodging his questions with vague answers. Haruto noticed, but he didn't press her, thinking she might be caught up in one of her creative whims.
When the morning of his birthday arrived, Haruto woke up to the soft light streaming through his window. The air was crisp, and he felt a quiet sense of excitement, though he wasn't sure why. His parents greeted him warmly at breakfast, presenting him with a small, neatly wrapped box. Inside was a watch—simple, yet elegant.
"Happy Birthday, Haruto. This will remind you to always make the most of your time," his father said with a smile.
"Thank you," Haruto replied, slipping the watch onto his wrist. It felt like a small step toward adulthood.
At school, the day seemed ordinary at first. His classmates wished him happy birthday here and there, but Aiko was conspicuously absent. When he asked around, nobody seemed to know where she was.
"She's probably planning something," one of his friends suggested with a wink.
Haruto sighed. Aiko was unpredictable, and that made him both curious and slightly nervous.
The final bell rang, and Haruto packed up his things, ready to head home. As he walked toward the school gates, he spotted one of Aiko's friends waiting for him.
"Haruto! Come with me," she said, barely giving him a chance to respond before grabbing his arm and leading him away.
"Wait, what's going on?" he asked, stumbling slightly as he tried to keep up.
"You'll see," she replied with a grin, refusing to reveal anything further.
They arrived at the park, where the sight that greeted Haruto left him speechless. Aiko had transformed a quiet corner of the park into a birthday wonderland. Streamers hung from the trees, and balloons swayed gently in the breeze. A picnic blanket was spread out, laden with snacks, a cake, and colorful decorations.
"Surprise!" Aiko shouted, stepping out from behind a tree with a wide grin.
Haruto blinked, a mixture of surprise and gratitude washing over him. "You did all this... for me?"
"Of course! It's your birthday, silly. Did you really think I'd forget?" she said, hands on her hips.
"I didn't think you'd go this far," he admitted, smiling.
As they settled down, Aiko lit the candles on the cake, which was a simple chocolate one decorated with sprinkles and the words "Happy Birthday, Haruto!" in slightly uneven icing.
"Make a wish!" she urged, holding the cake steady.
Haruto closed his eyes for a moment, thinking of the happiness he felt in that moment. Then he blew out the candles, the soft glow replaced by their shared laughter.
"What did you wish for?" Aiko asked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity.
"If I tell you, it won't come true," he replied with a smirk.
They spent the afternoon enjoying the treats and reminiscing about their childhood. Aiko even pulled out a small gift she had been hiding—a handmade scrapbook filled with pictures, doodles, and little notes about their friendship.
"I wanted to give you something that wasn't just store-bought," she said, handing it to him shyly.
Haruto flipped through the pages, his heart swelling with emotion. "This is amazing, Aiko. Thank you."
"There's more," she said, pointing to the back of the scrapbook.
Tucked into the last page was a folded piece of paper. When Haruto opened it, he found a hand-drawn map with a big "X" marked on it.
"What's this?" he asked, intrigued.
"It's a treasure map! I thought we could go on a little adventure before the day ends," Aiko said, her enthusiasm contagious.
The two set off, following the map's clues, which led them around the park. They laughed as they deciphered riddles and searched for hidden markers. Eventually, they reached a small wooden box buried under a tree.
Haruto opened it to find a tiny glass jar filled with paper stars, each one meticulously folded.
"Each star has a wish I made for you," Aiko explained. "Things like happiness, success, and... well, you'll have to read them to find out."
Haruto was deeply touched. "This is the best birthday I've ever had. Thank you, Aiko."
She smiled, her cheeks tinged with pink. "You're welcome, Haruto. You deserve it."
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, they sat on the picnic blanket, watching the world grow quiet around them.
"Today was perfect," Haruto said softly.
"It's not over yet," Aiko replied, pointing to the horizon.
Fireworks suddenly lit up the sky, their colors reflected in Haruto's eyes as he watched in awe.
"Aiko... did you plan this too?" he asked.
She shook her head. "No, but it's a nice coincidence, don't you think?"
Haruto nodded, a content smile on his face. "Yeah, it is."
As the last firework faded, Haruto realized how lucky he was to have a friend like Aiko—someone who turned ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.
