Chapter 10 The Sea Songstress
"Indigo, use Sunlight Convergence!"
On the verdant grass, a colorfully indigo snake lifted its head as the sunlight around continued to converge, emitting a faint, colorful halo, and then the gem on its forehead shone even brighter.
"Tiger, charge and interrupt."
Across the grassland, a dark-skinned boy, nearly the shade of brown, calmly responded, directing a small tiger that was crouching and sprinting ahead.
Compared to the small tiger, powerful and robust, the little snake was much more delicate and nimble. If it was smacked with a palm, it might be sent flying and would likely struggle to attack again.
"Indigo, lie across," Hexia also commanded in time.
As the two small animals collided, the little snake avoided the tiger's paw strike, then coiled around the tiger's forelimbs and body, its skin emitting a scorching heat that caused the tiger to roll on the ground. Then it kicked its limbs, attempting to shake the snake off.
Unfortunately, as the gem on the snake's head radiated blistering warmth, the little tiger's moment of defeat had arrived.
"Victory to Hexia," a nearby teacher announced, and the two small animals separated from one another.
"This is the 19th time you two have faced off, isn't it? Hexia has won 11 times, and Orcas has won 8 times—you're not that far apart," the smiling female teacher said.
"The key moment was the exchange; if the tiger had bitten the snake's neck, victory would have been certain. But if it missed and let the snake coil around it, defeat was highly likely," Orcas summarized.
"Indeed, another point is that the Indigo Snake has long-range attack capabilities while the Wind-Slicing Tiger is at a disadvantage from afar, hence it must engage in close combat to stand a chance of winning."
"If Orcas could teach the tiger some long-range attack moves, the tactics would become much more flexible. However, you could also take another route by teaching the Wind-Slicing Tiger how to accelerate, enabling it to seize more opportunities during close encounters."
"As for Hexia, I don't really have any better advice. Or rather, you've managed to utilize the Indigo Snake to such an extent already which is quite impressive," she added a bit of praise.
"The Indigo Snake leans toward the defensive type, suitable for combating other snake species of transcendent creatures. It has characteristics that can ignore many snake venoms and can rapidly dry up moisture, making it uncomfortable for other snakes. Often, where it resides, you can't see other snakes. This is also a herding method used by some indigenous people to ward off snakes."
"Alright, that concludes today's practical training. Class dismissed."
"Thank you, teacher." Students in the forest replied one after another, then scattered cheerfully, wandering off with their small companions to other places.
This was the second week of classes at Yuanting Academy. Everyone still held a sense of novelty for the Academy, and the current academic workload was extremely light, primarily focused on adaptation at the beginning.
"Hexia, do you want to head back to the dorm together?"
A girl holding a gray and blue kitten approached. She had deep purple hair, which was tied into two braids at the back of her head, falling in front of her chest.
"Meow~" The kitten in her arms seemed to have just woken up, opening its eyes.
This was a grey moon cat from Blood Pupil Sequence 2, currently rather weak, but as the teacher said, if raised well, it could also evolve into a powerful and rare being in the future.
"I have other matters today, so I'm afraid I can't accompany May back," said the girl in front, named Mel, also a student residing in Ring Bird Wind Tower.
"Aww, not together?" She seemed a bit disappointed, raising the cat in her hands to cover her face.
Seeing this, Hexia shook her head slightly, "Tomorrow then, I should have more time tomorrow."
"You promise, right? Come to my dorm to hang out tomorrow; I've prepared lots of tasty treats."
"Yeah, I'll be there," Hexia nodded, and at her feet, the indigo snake also coiled around her leg, tickling her a little.
"How come you've learned to be naughty too?" She bent down, grasped the neck of the Indigo Snake, lifted it up, then held it in her hands; a gem adorned its forehead, quite beautiful.
Barely flickering its tongue, it looked at Hexia as if wanting to lay on the girl, but alas, there was no good perch. If it coiled around her neck, Hexia would rap it, ultimately only wrapping halfway around her arm, with the other half resting on her shoulder, curiously swaying left and right.
Thanks to the Indigo Snake, many students in the class didn't dare to casually chat with this girl, who was pretty with fair skin and also had a serene personality. However, this was also because everyone was not very familiar yet; perhaps later, they would gradually lose their fear.
"Then I'll be off first, Mel~"
"Mm-hmm, Little Grey and I are going to the Gem Pavilion to see if there's any advanced gem suitable for it," Mel waved her hand.
Although she was quiet and a little bit timid, Mel was undoubtedly from a wealthy family; she hardly glanced at prices when shopping. Lately, whenever with Hexia, it was mostly Mel who treated.
"Nah, I can pay the bill; just consider it as this month's friendship fee," she said, not minding being looked at with pitying and sympathetic eyes.
After bidding farewell to newly acquainted classmates and friends, Hexia left the forest and headed down a secluded path, passing through layers of woods to come to a hidden cliffside shrouded in white mist. Now quite familiar with the route, she wasn't afraid and simply jumped down.
Cold air rushed by her side, lifting her hair and dress; a moment of coolness brought an extra sense of clarity. Then, in her heart, the girl softly recited the Featherfall Formula.
A faint white light radiated from her body. Soon, she felt lighter, and her descent slowed until she finally landed gently on the ground.
The Featherfall Formula is a precursor to Flight Magic. Mastery of this is necessary before learning the Flight Spell, but the latter is more difficult. Even in Yuanting Academy, where students are excellent, it typically took 2nd or 3rd-year students to gradually master it.
Walking through this mist-shrouded hidden canyon, a lake soon appeared. The lake was frozen over, and beneath the surface, one could see bubbles rising and condensing into white. The surface was also dotted with special ice flowers.
Stepping onto the cold lake surface, Hexia continued forward to the center of this small lake, where a tiny ice mountain stood.
As Hexia approached, a beautiful and dreamy figure appeared on the encased mountain. She was dressed in layers of ruffled dresses embellished with ice flowers, exuding extraordinary elegance. But this elegance didn't seem excessive on her; instead, it gave an illusion that it was naturally so.
The woman opened her eyes, which felt like a gust of icy wind. She descended in front of the girl and reformed.
"You've arrived." Her voice was exceptionally gentle, the most touching voice Hexia had ever heard, resembling the siren from ancient myths, with a mesmerizing power that seemed to tug at the strings of life.
"Yes, Teacher." She did not know the true name of this ghostly lady, who never disclosed it to her.
"Knowing too much will only distract you," the other had explained.
If not for the fact the other was a ghost, Hexia might even suspect her of being a Color Level Songstress, such was the enchanting power that seeped from her voice, subtly pervading, so much so that just a single word could plunge one into a dream.
"Let's begin today's lesson then." The dreamy ghost extended her hand from her snowy sleeves.
Her pale wrist, white with a faint blue sheen, took Hexia's hand, bringing a chill but not a harmful one. Then the ice beneath their feet shattered layer by layer, and Hexia plunged into the bottom of the lake.
The cold lake water enveloped her body, and the world in front of her eyes bloomed with light, then abruptly transformed, ushering her into an entirely new world.
An azure sky, warm and soothing sea breeze, seagulls circling in the sky, below lay islands in the sea, and on the islands, people danced in the squares to the ceaseless din of lively hawker calls and shouting.
"This is a world from long, long ago, and I will not explain exactly where, but shortly you will see the most famous Songstress of that era." The voice of the ghostly lady rang by Hexia's ear. She was gradually understanding this to be an illusion of memory, more advanced and lifelike than immersive cinema.
As she carefully examined her surroundings, a Songstress with Shui Lan hair slowly emerged from the crowd, her face veiled with light gauze, holding a seven-stringed instrument in her arms. Her voice seemed to merge with the tide, and merely her appearance incited cheers from countless people. Hexia, with her more sensitive perception, felt as if the entire ocean's waves harmonized with the Songstress's singing.
This was not just music expressing emotions, soothing the soul; it was also the song of the ocean's tides.
