Chapter 6: The Todoroki's
(Ok look! I know Todoroki has older siblings but what if he had one that wasn't endeavors child and just rei's with someone else before endeavor.)
The crisp January air nipped at Shoto's cheeks as he approached the familiar, yet somehow foreign, family home. After New Year's, he'd finally decided to spend the rest of his break with his mother and siblings. It had been months since their father, Enji, had moved out after the divorce, and the house felt strangely quiet without his imposing presence. But what Shoto hadn't expected was the anomaly he found in the living room.
A young man, probably in his mid-twenties, sat on the sofa, his posture relaxed. He had a striking appearance – white hair shot through with strands of ice blue, and eyes the color of a stormy, grey sky. He held a book, his expression thoughtful. Shoto froze, his hand on the doorframe. He didn't recognize him. Who was this stranger in their living room? He offered a hesitant nod and made his way past the stranger who returned a polite smile.
Ignoring the question nagging at him, Shoto headed straight to his mother's room. He knocked softly but there was no answer, so he carefully pushed the door open. The sight that greeted him made his breath hitch in his throat. His mother, Rei, was in bed, and beside her, under the tangled sheets, was a man. Not just any man, but Ryan – the gentle, kind man he'd met briefly months ago, the one his mother talked about with a wistful tone, her "first true love." They were naked and clearly had been sleeping, their closeness evident in the way their bodies were tangled.
Shoto backed out of the room, his face flushed, yet a strange sense of relief washed over him. He was shocked, yes, but beneath the initial surprise, he felt a flicker of warmth. His mother deserved happiness, and if she had found it with her first love, well, who was he to judge? He closed the door quietly, a small smile tugging at his lips.
Back in the living room, the stranger remained, still engrossed in his book. Shoto cleared his throat, deciding to tackle the mystery head-on. "Excuse me," he began, choosing his words carefully, "I'm Shoto. I don't think we've met."
The young man looked up, his grey eyes meeting Shoto's. "Terrence," he said, offering a small, somewhat hesitant smile. "Sorry to be intruding. It's a… long story."
Shoto sat on the opposite end of the couch. "I have time... I'm curious what brought you here"
Terrence shifted, "My parents… they used to live here. They do… well, the important part is my mom lived here." He hesitated, "I wanted to reconnect with her, my family."
Shoto was taken aback. "Your parents… my mother? That's… impossible." Shoto couldn't wrap his head around it. His mother, who had suffered so much with Enji, had a son before him? It felt like the world had shifted on its axis.
Hours passed, filled with strained small talk and the underlying tension of unspoken questions. Finally, the door to the bedroom opened and Rei emerged, Ryan's hand resting on the small of her back. She took one look at Shoto, her expression softening, and then at Terrence. She sat down heavily on the couch, taking a deep breath.
"Shoto, sweetie," she began, her voice laced with a mixture of nervousness and resolve, "There's something you need to know. All of you do." She glanced towards the hallway where the sounds of footsteps were approaching. Natsuo, Fuyumi, and finally Touya appeared, their faces etched with questions.
Rei gathered them all, her eyes holding each of their gazes. "Terrence is… is my son. My first son." The words hung in the air, heavy and shocking. "I had him when I was fifteen, before I met your father. My parents… they made me give him away. They told me it was for the best, that I needed to marry your father when I was of age, to put the family back on track." Her voice cracked, tears brimming in her silver eyes. "I haven't had any contact with him since."
A stunned silence fell over the room. Shoto felt his stomach twist with a mixture of disbelief and empathy for his mother. He glanced at Terrence who seemed to be both nervous and hopeful.
The explanation continued, a confession of lost years and stolen chances. Ryan sat close to Rei, his presence a silent comfort and support. The revelation hung heavy, a weight that shifted everyone's understanding of their family.
"This is Ryan...my first true love...and the father of Terrence," Rei said as she brought Ryan forward to introduce him to them.
When their emotions were finally in a manageable place, Rei and Ryan excused themselves, mentioning something about a "date," leaving the five siblings to process what they had learned. Touya, surprisingly, was the first to speak.
"So, we have an older brother," he said, his voice rough and edged with a strange curiosity. He looked at Terrence, a rare, almost smile playing on his lips. "That's… something."
Natsuo and Fuyumi followed suit, their initial shock slowly giving way to curiosity. Shoto watched as they began to ask Terrence questions, genuine interest replacing the initial awkwardness. He joined in as he watched his siblings interact with Terrence.
They spoke for hours, and it wasn't easy at first, but they eventually warmed up to each other. They found common ground, shared childhood memories, compared notes on their mother. Terrence was gentle but firm and easy to talk to. Even, Touya, who usually kept to himself, opened up a little, making small jokes and even agreeing to share a story of his own. For the first time in Shoto's memory, the family felt… whole, if a bit unconventional.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the living room, Shoto realized how drastically his perception of his family had shifted. It was messy, complicated, and far from perfect, but it was their family. And even though it had been born from years of secrets and lies, it was now something they could navigate together. He looked at his siblings, a small smile playing on his lips. The road ahead wouldn't be easy, but for the first time in a long time, it felt like they were finally on the right path, even if it was a path they never expected to take. This New Year, it seemed, was beginning a new chapter.
