It took more than a day to use the relay network towards the Exodus Cluster and then use FTL to get to the Asgard System. I wanted to reply to the message but the line cut out before I could send out a message of my own, mostly wanting to know the coordinates or direction.

"Garrus, can you direct me towards these fusion torches? I'm guessing that they'll have to throw up enormous energy signatures, right?"

He keyed at his console and nodded his agreement. "Yes, Shepard. That should work. But I'm picking up other signals. It looks like whoever arrived has been busy. We've got extensive minefields and turrets around the torches."

"Well… Shit… Guess I shouldn't have expected this to be an easy assignment."

Accelerating towards the first set of fusion torches, Garrus reported in rather quickly on the defensive measures in place. Turrets emerged from the ground and immediately launched rockets in our direction. And what made them a real bitch to deal with was the fact that they only emerged due to the proximity of the Mako. Ashley told me that she could time her firing with the movement of the turret. It took careful timing, and it failed more than once. Parking the Mako, we clambered out and walked towards the door leading into the facility. It was inside that we confirmed that batarians were responsible. "So help me, Ash, I will fly to Khar'shan right now and go to fucking war." I then stopped and took a deep breath. "But that behaviour is unbecoming and would make me no better than Saren."

"Commander, this is what they want. A response," Garrus stated, "They want to anger the Alliance and force them into a war. What better way to provoke it than destroy an entire world."

"Tell Kira everything when we're done here," Liara suggested, "The Council can place sanctions and embargoes on the Hegemony. Truly cut them off from Council Space and the trade networks."

The same woman who had contacted us upon landing managed to communicate with us again when we were on our way to the second lot of torches. She introduced herself as Kate Bowman and added that batarian extremists had taken control of the asteroid. We'd figured that out already but at least we knew that humans were still alive on the asteroid.

Driving towards the second group of torches, we received another warning about blasting caps that would explode should we drive the Mako over them. Garrus agreed that it matched what he thought was a minefield. Approaching the field with caution, I pulled the Mako up short as Garrus transferred the data to his omni-tool before we climbed out of the Mako and formed up.

"Okay, Garrus. Lead the way. Try not to walk us into a massive explosion that will kill us all."

"No pressure, Commander," he deadpanned.

It was a facility that was eerily reminiscent of many that we'd found before. Full of batarians and drones that did their best to kill us. Those with tech skills focused on the drones. That led to some hearty chuckles as I kicked the Mako into gear and we approached the third set of torches. It was pretty much the same as the first set of torches with half a dozen turrets hoping to cause us damage. After using the same tactics, once the last turret was destroyed, I parked the Mako outside the facility and anyone inside was about to have a very bad fucking day.

Blood flowed as we moved through the facility before I stepped back and allowed Tali to shut down the final set of torches. Once she confirmed they were shut down, and Garrus confirmed the trajectory was now likely to avoid impact with Terra Nova, we turned and started to walk out of the facility where we were greeted by another group of batarians. I could only assume that this was Charn who was sent to stop us.

"Commander, a moment of your time."

"Speak quickly, batarian."

"Look, we're not stupid. We don't want war. This was only meant to be a simple slave grab. But Balak…"

I raised my weapon and grinned. "Thank you for the name. Fuck off," I stated before I pulled the trigger.

I'm sure Charn and those with him thought they could take on our group. They were proven wrong. I was pissed off. Ashley was pissed off. Even Kaidan was pissed off. It was only when Ashley called in that the final turret was destroyed that I carefully drove the Mako towards the entrance of the final facility. I had no idea what to expect inside except an unknown group of batarian terrorists that were probably aided by all manner of weapons to kill us.

"No one is to be a hero once we head inside," I told my squad as we gathered near the entrance, "And that includes me. You follow doctrine. Find cover. Eliminate the enemy and only then move forward. If there are drones, call them in and we'll deal with them as a team. What matters most is saving the hostages." I saw the nods of approval. "No innocents. That has been my mantra since my days on the street. I'm not changing that now, even if there are batarians inside."

It was a small army of batarians inside, assisted by a group of drones. The tech experts took care of the drones, while the rest of us focused on the batarians. It wasn't an easy battle as the batarians were prepared for our arrival and fought ferociously in reply to the firepower that I had at my disposal. But Liara proved her biotic power.
