Chapter 12: These Rich people
"Oh!" Peter's eyes widened slightly as he watched Lorna approach the woman. She gracefully placed a menu on the table, then asked, 'What would you like to eat?'
The woman didn't even glance at the menu. 'Kung fu Barbecue,' she said.
"This dish is served by weight. How many pounds do you want?"
"Let's start with one."
"Alright, just a second."
Lorna took away the menu and walked into the kitchen to say to Rex: "Boss, one pound of Kung Fu Barbecue for one customer."
"You're here!" Without raising his head, Rex answered while cutting the vegetables: "Alright, I'll serve. Have you seen Peter? He's a new assistant, with no work experience. Teach him more about work!"
"Alright!" Lorna nodded, went in and changed into her work clothes, then returned to Peter to tell him what to do.
Rex emerged from the kitchen, carrying a plate of raw meat. He placed it on the woman's table, then focused his Ki on the meat, causing it to cook right before her eyes.
The woman stared at the sizzling meat, her blue eyes wide with disbelief. She covered her mouth with her hand, as if to stifle a scream.
"Please enjoy!"
Rex turned to leave, but the woman suddenly stood up and called out, 'Please wait!'
He turned back to her hear her say: "My name is Joy Meachum, an old friend of Danny Rand!" She extended her hand to shake hands with Rex.
Rex recognized her immediately. Joy Meachum, Danny's childhood friend and a powerful businesswoman. She ran Rand Enterprises with her brother. It was strange to see her in a small Chinese restaurant. She didn't seem like the kind of person who'd be interested in Ki and Kung Fu.
"Hi I'm Rex Lee!" Rex shook her hand and said: "Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Meachum!"
"Can we sit down and talk?"
"Of course!" At this time, there were still no other customers going through the door. Rex nodded and sat down on the other side of the table: "It would be a pleasure!"
Joy looked at the barbecue in front of her, saying with a hint of emotion in her voice: "Mr. Lee, just three minutes ago, I used to think you're just a liar playing tricks."
Rex raised his eye brows, surprised by her straight forwardness and answered, "It is okay. It's our instinct as humans to feel doubtful when facing the unknown."
"To be honest, I still can't fully believe you yet!" With a sharp gaze, Joy stared at Rex: "Perhaps, you are just that good at doing magic tricks."
"Ha ha." Rex showed an ambiguous smile and said: "Ms. Meachum, I don't believe I owe you anything. There's no need for me to prove myself to you. Ki exists, whether you believe it or not! What you think of me does not change that."
Rex raised his hand to stop her. 'I know who you are, Ms. Meachum. You're the director of Rand Enterprises, and you're worth hundreds of millions. But what does that have to do with me?'"
Joy took a deep breath and forced a smile. 'I apologize for being rude. I'm only here because of Danny. He told me that if I tried your Kung Fu Barbecue, I'd believe him. Please, Mr. Lee, I need you to prove that Ki exists. It's very important to me and to Danny.'"
Rex understood. Danny must have told her all sorts of crazy things about Kunlun and The Hand. If Rex couldn't prove it, she'd probably think he was crazy.
Rex couldn't help but ask, 'He didn't summon the Iron Fist for you? That would be the ultimate proof of Ki.'"
Joy shook her head. 'No, he didn't. But he did mention the Iron Fist. I have no idea what he was talking about.'"
Rex nodded. 'Danny's not quite ready to summon the Iron Fist yet. But I can help him! Ms. Meachum, I can transfer my Ki to you. Give me your hand, and you'll feel it for yourself.'"
Joy hesitated, then slowly placed her hand in Rex's. 'Is this alright?'"
Rex nodded. 'Close your eyes, focus, and let me know when you're ready.'"
Joy's eyes flew open, and her body trembled. She pulled back her hand, staring at her fingertips. 'This... this...'"
"This is Ki!" she gasped, her voice filled with awe.
Rex was already halfway through the kitchen door when Joy looked up. 'Tell Danny Rand he owes me one!'"
Rex grinned. 'Stun them with what you have, and walk away. How cool is that!' But as he entered the kitchen, Lorna followed him, her eyes wide with amazement. 'Boss, the customer locked the door and put up the "Closed" sign. She gave me this card and said you can charge whatever you want.'"
Rex's mouth twitched. 'These rich people,' he muttered, a hint of envy in his voice.
