Regardless of how the George Baker incident unfolds, it no longer concerns Mike and his family.
Now, they were back home, having prepared a hearty dinner before nightfall.
It was a lavish meal, all dishes the three kids loved.
However, Charles and Eric stared tearfully at Mike and Clark as they ate, while the two of them only had a bowl of plain rice, accompanied by constant drooling.
"Dad, you're so cruel!"
Charles muttered softly, his eyes following Mike's chopsticks as they moved.
"Heh…"
Mike swallowed the food in his mouth and said, "Didn't you think that worrying me was also cruel before you snuck off?"
Crunch!
A crispy piece of fried chicken made a satisfying sound in Mike's mouth.
Charles stared at the chicken, listlessly eating his rice, and lamented, "Dad, I was wrong!"
Mike glanced at Eric and picked up his favorite braised eggplant, shaking it back and forth. He blew on it and placed it into Clark's bowl.
Slap!
Eric slammed his chopsticks onto the table, stood up abruptly, and shouted, "Dad, you're bullying me!"
"Bullying you?" Mike smiled faintly and said, "I traveled thousands of miles…"
"Dad, there weren't thousands of miles."
Clark couldn't help but correct him.
Mike shot Clark a glare. "Shut up!"
"Because of you two, I traveled thousands of miles. You're the ones bullying me!"
Eric shook his head and said, "I don't care, I don't care. You're bullying me now, and I'm going to fight back!"
"Fight back?" Mike sneered. "Then don't eat your rice."
"Dad, I was wrong!"
Eric pressed his rumbling stomach and decided to endure for now.
Mike nodded in satisfaction, and as he glanced at the envious looks around the table, he finished his dinner.
After dinner, with a table full of leftovers, Clark volunteered to wash the dishes.
Mike agreed, not calling out Clark's little plan, and turned to go back to his room.
Clark waved at his two younger brothers and pointed at the food on the table.
Eric and Charles gasped and immediately began to dig in.
As they savored the delicious meal, their eyes filled with tears.
"Shh!" Clark made a hand gesture and whispered to the two, "Quiet, eat quickly!"
They nodded eagerly.
After making a skill card in his room, Mike guessed that by the time Clark finished feeding the two little ones and cleaning up, he would be out of the room.
Casting a glance at Charles and Eric watching cartoons, Mike walked into the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe.
"Clark, come out here with me."
Clark wiped his hands and turned, saying, "Coming!"
Mike motioned to Clark's height, "I didn't notice, but you've grown so tall. Time flies."
"Dad…"
"Come on."
Mike put his arm around Clark's shoulder, and the two walked outside.
They opened the basement door, and Mike felt around before switching on the light. He rolled up a blanket on the floor and lifted a section of the floorboard, revealing the ship Mike had hidden underground.
"This is the ship you arrived in."
Clark jumped into the pit, circled around the ship, and looked unusually calm. After a while, he jumped back out and suddenly hugged Mike. "Dad, I'm so glad I met you."
If it weren't for meeting Mike, whether he would be alive or free right now would be uncertain.
Mike ran his hand through Clark's smooth black hair, pulled out the key with the "S" symbol, and handed it to Clark. "This is the key to the ship. You might find it useful later."
Clark reached out to feel it. "Keep it for me. Give it to me later."
"Dad, where do I come from? Why am I here on Earth? Where are they?"
His voice was low, and his mood was heavy.
Mike hugged Clark, his heart aching as he looked at the child. "We're right here."
Clark's body stiffened for a moment, then softened as he hugged Mike tightly.
Mike winced in pain as he patted Clark's head. "Kid, take it easy. You're going to break my old back."
Clark grinned and smiled back.
"Dad, I need to go on a journey to find the answers."
"But not right now."
"Mm, I understand."
A silence settled...
"Dad, what delicious things are you stealing here?"
Charles and Eric appeared at the door.
Mike's eyelid twitched as he put the floorboard back and said, "Are you both full? Was the food good?"
"It was amazing! Especially…"
Charles quickly covered Eric's mouth and whispered, "Idiot, what are you saying!"
Eric blinked, then he and Charles turned and ran off.
"Go ahead, go watch TV with them," Mike said, giving Clark a pat on the head.
"Mm!"
Clark nodded, then quickly left.
---
After Mike restored the basement to its original state, he walked out.
There was no moon that night, but a brilliant galaxy stretched across the sky.
"Heh, the stars are nice tonight."
Mike sighed softly as he gazed up at the sky.
He remembered that the night Clark's spaceship had landed, the same galaxy had been visible.
Has it really been that long?
"Clark is already ten years old, and I…"
Mike paused, his mouth twitching. "Damn it, I'm almost forty? Maybe I should learn from the old popsicles and try to preserve myself…"
Mike did a quick mental calculation.
By the time Iron Man and the Avengers events come around, he will have…
"Damn!"
Mike muttered, heading home.
---
Life for Mike's family returned to normal.
He dropped the kids off at school, spent some time around the farm, and occasionally stopped by the bar. Although the town's bar wasn't busy during the day, he sometimes chatted with a pretty girl, sharing stories and sparking some passion.
This was Mike's favorite pace of life.
Looking at the time, he turned down a girl's invitation for a night in and headed to the supermarket.
It was time to buy groceries.
After all, he was a responsible father. The girl was nice, but the kids' meals came first.
He could always go out after the kids were asleep.
The teleportation skill card was still quite useful.
Might as well make the most of it.
---
After buying the groceries, Mike picked up the kids from school. As they chatted about their day, they all happily headed home.
After dinner, the whole family sat on the couch, watching TV.
"Dad, Hope said his dad wants to invite us to their house for dinner."
"Their house?" Mike glanced at Clark. "Where is that?"
"In town."
Though Hank's company was located some distance from the town, Hope insisted on living there.
"Hmm…" Mike pondered for a moment. "Are you sure it's for dinner?"
"Definitely!"
"Can he cook?"
"Um… probably…"
Clark sounded a little uncertain.
"When? When?"
Charles leaned in between them, eagerly asking.
"Saturday night."
"Yay!"
Eric cheered.
"Alright, we'll go! You reply to Hope tomorrow."
Mike made his decision, then told the kids to go to bed. Just as he was about to turn off the TV, a news flash interrupted.
"A mutant criminal has escaped?"
Mike glanced at the photo on the screen, feeling that such things had nothing to do with him, a simple farmer. He turned off the TV.
