Chapter 7
The next day.
In the elegant room of Ling-han Pavilion, the leader Yan Changfeng and Tan Chuyan were sitting in front of a table playing chess.
Although Yan Changfeng had never meet Tan Chuyan, he often heard about him from Xiao Yutang.
It was said that Tan Chuyan was chosen as the heir by Tan Hongchen when he was thirteen years old. Some elders in the An-xiang and Ling-han pavilions were unhappy and came out to object the decision.
Because Tan Hongchen didn’t have son, few people came out with a lot of plans in their mind, they were trying to get their children to be recognized by Tan Hongchen and became the future master of two pavilions.
But who would have thought that Tan Chuyan came out halfway and stole the spot.
Facing those old people, Tan Chuyan didn’t show any mercy. He used his amazing insight and found out the evil deeds of each opponent. They were embezzling money and secretly colluded with people from another kingdom. He brough them all to justice and pulled all of them off.
Then, Tan Chuyan used the excuse of cleaning up, he dealt with their families without hesitation until no one was left alive.
When those people were dealt, Xiao Yutang who was in charge of tortures, also present. He looked at the ground stained with blood; his face turned pale. He had never heard such method of execution nor had he seen it before.
“Young master, these people have been with master for more than ten years. You killed them all easily, I’m afraid it wasn’t easy to explain it to others.” Xiao Yutang told him with some fear.
Tan Chuyan wiped his dirty dagger, he looked at the man, “Who should I explain to? Master or other elders, or…. You?”
“No, I don’t dare.” Xiao Yutang knelt down in fear with a plop. He was scared it was his turns to be cut up.
After wiping his dagger clean, Tan Chuyan smiled a little, “Uncle Xiao, do you think if I didn’t kill them today. Will they come to kill me in the future??”
The answer was yes. If these people weren’t dealt today, they would come back for revenge and kill Tan Chuyan for his position.
Tan Chuyan would never let such a thing happen. He would send these people on their way to their graves, before they took action in the future.
Xiao Yutang frowned, “But….” Wasn’t this too much?
“But what?” Tan Chuyan put the dagger against Xiao Yutang’s neck, “Xiao Yutang? Do you know the consequences of having mercy for enemy? Sooner or later, your neck will no longer in your body.”
Tan Chuyan rubbed the handle with his fingers and looked at him, “Uncle Xiao, you and I aren’t enemies. And I don’t want to be your enemy. Please understand.”
“This subordinate… understands.”
Xiao Yutang raised his neck, he didn’t dare to move at all. He was afraid this young man in front of him would wipe his life out with one single knife. After all, he was a little dissatisfied with him.
Tan Chuyan was too young and not capable enough. But now, he had to be careful with him.
“Uncle Xiao, don’t worry.” Tan Chuyan put away his dagger and helped Xiao Yutang from the ground, “I know you don’t think I’m capable enough. But I will convince you sooner or later. Is cleaning up this time proof you a thing?”
“I am convinced!”
Xiao Yutang who just got up, knelt down again. This wave of killing chicken to scare the monkey really worked well.
That night, Tan Chuyan killed anyone who had evil thoughts and he happened to watch it all. Although he wasn’t convinced at first but he actually didn’t have any evil thoughts.
After that incident, Xiao Yutang thought Tan Chuyan would leave him out of his things but Tan Chuyan chose to have close relationship with him.
Later, on the New Year’s Eve celebration, he asked Tan Chuyan why and Tan Chuyan answered him frankly.
He said, “Uncle Xiao and Uncle Yan’s status in the An-xiang and Ling-han Pavilions are only second to my teacher and you are loyal to him. Instead of working hard to cultivate my own people, it’s better to gain your trust so I could use the two pavilions power as quickly as possible.”
Tan Chuyan personally served him a glass of wine and said, “Although I often makes mistakes in the palace but for you, I wish we could exchange sincerity. I hope uncle Xiao could believe me.”
Xiao Yutang was moved by his words and Tan Chuyan’s courage and ability were impressive.
From that day, Xiao Yutang had completely become Tan Chuyan’s most loyal subordinate.
Later, in order to help Tan Chuyan, he often talked to Yan Changfeng about Tan Chuyan and his matter about coming to Jing Kingdom.
But there wasn’t a word from Xiao Yutang that made Yan Changfeng immediately become loyal to Tan Chuyan. Xiao Yutang didn’t try anything else, he just talked about Tan Chuyan’s deeds and let him chose on his own.
They had worked together for many years and Xiao Yutang knew Yan Changfeng fairly well.
This person didn’t follow other people casually. He would choose on his own which master he was willing to serve. No amount of persuasion or forces could soften his stance.
It was better to let him judge on his own.
Xiao Yutang’s tricks really worked. Ever since he had heard about Tan Chuyan, this person was really curious about the prince.
.
.
Now that they finally met, Yan Changfeng’s curiosity about Tan Chuyan didn’t dismiss but increased.
His talk with Tan Chuyan made him puzzled. He actually planned to assist Chu Qingyi, the eldest princess of Jing Kingdom, in her pursuit of the world.
Although, Chu Qingyi grew up in the General’s Mansion but she was woman and couldn’t stand in the court.
As soon as this decision came out, Yan Changfeng almost lost all his curiosity. He moved a chess piece and looked at Tan Chuyan, “Young master, why did you choose her? It is a princess who hasn’t come out of her room.”
Tan Chuyan stared at the chess board and rubbed the smooth chess piece in his hand. He couldn’t find a place for it.
He stared at the chess board seriously and asked back, “Why can’t it be her?”
Yan Changfeng said, “Since ancient times, man have been superior over woman. Man inherits the throne and woman enter the harem. Now, you wanted a woman to step into the court and inherit the throne. Not to mention whether she has the ability or not but it seems a little childish dream.”
What Tan Chuyan hated the most was talking about this topic; ancestral rules, man and woman’s status. All human beings were equal and there shouldn’t be a distinction between them as high or low.
He was a person who came from the future and he didn’t believe in the feudal norms.
Besides, we were all the same human. No one was better than anyone else. We still would die and rot in the same way. The only difference was whether we live mediocrely or luxuriously.
Tan Chuyan moved his glance from the chess board and looked at Yan Changfeng, “Uncle Yan, Emperor Wu Zhou could ascend as the woman emperor. Why can’t eldest princess do the same?”
“Emperor Wu Zhou is an exception. How could eldest princess follow her path casually?” Yan Changfeng didn’t hide his disapproval, “Besides, the ancestral rules are here. How can it be broken again and again.”
Tan Chuyan leaned back and supported himself with his arms. He looked at the bird standing on the branch with a smile, “Uncle Yan, please answer my question. Who do you think make these rules?”
Yan Changfeng raised his hands respectfully to the sky, “Of course the deceased ancestors.”
Tan Chuyan said, “Then, the ancestors are human beings too?”
“Of course!”
“So,” Tan Chuyan dropped the chess piece in his hand, “Since the rules were made by people, why can’t we overthrow the old rules and make a new one? Furthermore, the rules have been broken once, so why no broke it again?”
After hearing it, Yan Changfeng was startled, “This is disrespectful to our ancestors! Even if the eldest princess establishes a new dynasty in the future, she may not be able to convince the officials in the court!”
“Disrespectful? Where is the disrespect?” Tan Chuyan said, “do you think every change of dynasty is peaceful? When the new emperor rose to the throne, there must be a lot of people who have the intention of restoration but how many have successes?”
Tan Chuyan continued, “Why do you think they didn’t succeed? The emperor holds great power. Who dares to disobey the power and who can disobey? First, shock them with the power then conquer them with sincerity and merit. Gradually, awe will engrave into the people and courtiers’ bones. Then passed down from one generation to another, this will create a peaceful and prosperous age.”
Tan Chuyan spoke loudly after a pause, “So, why can’t the eldest princess imitate it?”
“But-” Yan Changfeng said worriedly, “What should we do if the respected old minister refused to obey?”
Tan Chuyan felt a little cold, he blew into his hands and rubbed it, “If you don’t accept then change it. There are thousands of people in the world. There are many capable people with lofty ideas. I don’t believe that everyone is willing to live in a rotten and moldy world under the old custom. Furthermore, people are more important the king. If the officials didn’t have common people in their heart, they will harm common people. Once people dissatisfied, it would build up and accumulate. Where could they vent their anger and dissatisfaction? The master of imperial court, the emperor?”
Tan Chuyan asked, “Uncle Yan, do you think people will rebel by then? Rather than keeping this piece of rat shit and ruining the entire kingdom. It was better to change it directly. Besides, when the new dynasty is opened, the court will have to be reshuffled. Why should we let the old people stir up trouble? It didn’t matter if they are highly respected, once the dynasty changed, you have to follow the new rules.”
Tan Chuyan was a little thirty, he poured a cup of tea and took a few sips, “At that time. If one of the one old minister is dissatisfied, he will be replaced. If ten are dissatisfied, then ten will be replaced. In fact, as long as the leader is changed, everything will be fine. Kill the chicken to scare the monkey, let me see who dares to act up.”
Tan Chuyan paused a little, “O course, the people I will assist must be a good king. If it was a foolish one, even if I have to bear infamy of regicide. I will kill him with my own hands. But I believe in my vision of people.”
Yan Chuyan felt he was a little cold looking at the person in front of him. Cruel and brave.
This person was someone who didn’t want to mess around and shouldn’t be make trouble with.
For a moment, Yan Changfeng didn’t dare to look at the charming face. He calmly looked at the chess board, he knew he was lost and had no chance of survive.
Tan Chuyan put down his tea, gathered up his cloak and murmured, “Uncle Yan, actually I always felt that women naturally could do what men could do. Sometimes, women can do it while men couldn’t. Don’t underestimated them, otherwise you don’t know how you might die.”
“Yes, I understand.”
It had been a decade and it was the first time Yan Changfeng said the word. It was in front of the young man. For a moment, Yan Changfeng thought this person must be an old demon that was bored out of his life.
In fact, it was right, the person in front of him wasn’t an eighteen years old boy but an old man living thousands of years from the future.
Although Yan Changfeng accepted Tan Chuyan’s decision to assist the eldest princess. But he still a little worried, “Young master, where does the eldest princess get her power?”
Power was the army. But where could the eldest princess find an army?
“This is so easy to find.” Tan Chuyan said, “Isn’t Feng Chilie had the Wolf-eagle Cavalry? The eldest princess is the daughter of the late queen. The late General Feng was the late queen’s brother. When the queen passed away, the late General Feng requested to take the eldest princess back inside the General’s Mansion and raised her since she was young. Therefore, the eldest princess and Feng Chilie must be close. We need to lobby Feng Chilie a little bit to help the eldest princess.”
All the problems were solved, Yan Changfeng stopped talking.
He thought carefully about Jing Kingdom’s situation. It seemed that only the eldest princess, Chu Qingyi the suitable candidate for the throne.
The third prince, Chu Yiling was born from a concubine, he was a playboy and couldn’t be counted.
The fifth prince, Chu Yiheng was born from the eldest princess of Great Yong. Although he had the ambition and achievement. But it was still from another kingdom, it would be too funny to assist this one prince. They worked really hard to win the throne for him but it was the same as gifting a wedding dress for others.
The seventh prince, Chu Yilian was born from Li mei-ren. He only liked to recite poems and paint on weekdays. He had never cared about political affairs.
If His highness Chu Yizhuo was still here, the situation might be different.
The second prince and the eldest princess were both the descendants from the late queen. However, a fire at Full Moon Banquet burned the entire Chang-le Palace to the ashes. The late queen and the second prince were buried in the sea of fire and no one survived.
