Chapter 29
After hearing what Tan Chuyan said, and Feng Chengjian understood instantly. He muttered something under his breath and dismissed the two of them.
Tan Chuyan pushed Feng Chilie back to his small courtyard, clearing away all the irrelevant servants. In one swift motion, Tan Chuyan discarded the people and wheelchairs on the spot.
Feng Chilie stood up, catching up with him. “How can you quit the act halfway through?”
“I know everything; why pretend to be a big-tailed wolf with a broken leg in front of me?”
Tan Chuyan glanced at his legs, a slight smile playing on his lips. “You keep pretending when you shouldn’t. Believe it or not, I will make you a real cripple and a villain for life.”
Feng Chilie retorted, “Then I will rely on you from now on.”
Once inside the room, they began to talk. Tan Chuyan collapsed onto the bed tiredly, his mind filled with the contents of his conversation with Feng Chengjian and the information he had reorganized.
The volume of information was overwhelming, making Tan Chuyan feel like his brain was insufficient. He raised his arms and covered his eyes.
Now, there were two individuals to find—one being the controller and the other a potential enemy or ally.
Since taking charge of Ling-han Pavilion, Tan Chuyan considered himself informed about major world events. But this was an occurrence he hadn’t encountered in a long time.
Certainly, one shouldn’t be overly confident; there were always places they couldn’t foresee.
Feng Chilie sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to pluck Tan Chuyan’s elegant fingers, gently pinching them. “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing,” Tan Chuyan pulled his fingers away, but Feng Chilie, like a persistent dog, wrapped his other hand around him and continued to pinch his phalanges.
Tan Chuyan couldn’t be bothered to move and simply let him be.
After the pinching, Feng Chilie shook his hand vigorously, then bent down, pressing Tan Chuyan under him, holding his slender neck. “Your Highness, you’d better be honest and tell me what you and my dad talked about, or I won’t be gentle.”
“Gentle?” Tan Chuyan’s upper body remained still, and he bent his legs, resting them on Feng Chilie’s body. “Then I’ll take your word for it, at least spare a life.”
Feng Chilie looked down, feeling Tan Chuyan’s faint pulse. He exerted a little force in a threatening manner, then rolled over, lying down beside Tan Chuyan.
“Forget it, just say whatever you want,” Feng Chilie put his hands under his head. “But at least tell me who your teacherr is. This is what you promised me before.”
“Tan Hongchen,” Tan Chuyan said. “My teacher’s name is Tan Hongchen.”
“Tan, Hong, Chen,” Feng Chilie bit out the name and sat up as if he suddenly realized. “Your teacher is actually him!”
Tan Chu Yan was taken aback. “What’s the problem? You’re so surprised. You don’t look like a general; you look like a monkey.”
Feng Chilie replied, “If you knew the glorious deeds of your teacher, you’d be like me.”
“Glorious deeds?” Tan Chuyan’s curiosity was piqued. “Tell me about it.”
“This is wonderful,” Feng Chilie said. “You have to start from when I talked about it in my mother’s womb. No, it must have started before I was born.”
Thirty or forty years ago, the Qi Kingdom and the Jing Kingdom followed the agreement they made a hundred years ago when they founded the kingdoms. The two exchanged hostages.
The hostage sent by Jing Kingdom to Qi Kingdom was Chu Minghan’s younger brother, and the hostage sent by Qi Kingdom to Jing Kingdom was Tan Hongchen.
Tan Hongchen went to Qi Kingdom as a hostage when he was seven years old. He was raised in Qi Kingdom since childhood. During his time as a hostage, he lived in the General’s Mansion, growing up with Feng Chengjian’s brother and sister, forming a friendship with the older generation.
“It is said,” Feng Chilie’s face lit up with excitement. “Tan Hongchen liked my aunt when he was a hostage, and he boldly expressed his feelings. Unfortunately, my aunt liked the current king, so the three of them had a dramatic love triangle: ‘I love her, but she loves him, but he doesn’t know she loves him and thinks she loves someone else!'”
Tan Chuyan was stunned to hear this. He never expected such a bizarre thing to happen to his teacher.
Feng Chilie continued, “Because of this misunderstanding, the Second Highness Chu Yichu was almost stillborn. Fortunately, the misunderstanding was later resolved, but—” Feng Chilie sighed, “The Second Highness is still not alive.”
“Then when did my teacher return to Qi Kingdom?” Tan Chuyan asked.
“When I was three years old,” Feng Chilie thought for a while. “But I saw him frequently afterward. He often came to Jing Kingdom to have a drink with my father and compete in swordsmanship. It’s estimated that he learned our family’s swordsmanship from him during that time.”
Feng Chilie patted Tan Chuyan’s soft belly. “Then you secretly learned from him. It’s no longer a secret now.”
Tan Chuyan grabbed his restless paws, threw them aside. “What about later? Will he come again?”
“What later? How can there be any later?” Feng Chilie said. “I also wanted him to come often because when he comes, I can rest. But he hasn’t been here since I was five years old.”
“Is it because he was banned?” Tan Chuyan guessed.
Although he knew that Tan Hongchen was banned from the palace, he didn’t know the specific reason and didn’t inquire further. Now that Feng Chilie was telling him, he became curious.
Feng Chilie said, “Yes. Someone in your Qi Kingdom claimed that Tan Hongchen had close contact with us and had evil intentions, and then he was banned.”
Tan Chuyan said disdainfully, “Tan Hongyun is like that. He is very suspicious, values his reputation, doesn’t like others influencing his judgment, and is extremely arrogant.”
“So, you took advantage of this matter and married yourself to the Jing Kingdom,” Feng Chilie said, lowering his eyes and looking at him. “Then you tried to run away from me and tricked everyone, right?”
“Yes.” Tan Chuyan smiled, sitting up with his arms propped up. “You secretly investigated me?”
Tan Chuyan secretly investigated him at first. The forced marriage could be found out as soon as he investigated, but only after knowing Tan Hongyun’s character, someone could understand his intention to do so.
“Can I not check it out?” Feng Chilie grinded his teeth. “I was dumped on my wedding day. I have never suffered such humiliation in my life.”
“What a coincidence, so am I.” Tan Chuyan looked at him, smiling charmingly, and asked again,
“General, look at how frank the two of us are now. Why don’t we turn this story over? Tit-for-tat is boring. How about being friends?”
“God, my eldest sister stands behind you, can I not turn over?” Feng Chilie sighed, then smiled.
“However, it is not bad to be friends. I really care about you. I have never seen anyone like you. You are so funny and sick.”
Tan Chuyan also lowered his eyes and laughed, but after laughing a few times, he coughed again, and his whole face turned red.
Feng Chilie quickly raised his hand and touched his forehead, which was hot.
“Your body is really weak.” Feng Chilie quickly tucked him into the bed. “I’ll ask Uncle Fu to take a look at you.”
“No need.” Tan Chuyan grabbed his hand. “My body is like this; I’ll be fine after just a little sleep.”
“Forget it.” Feng Chilie said, “The toxins of wolfberry poison in your body haven’t been cleansed yet, so you have to look at it.”
“Wait!” Tan Chuyan got up from the bed. “What kind of poison did you just say that I was poisoned?”
Feng Chilie: “Wolfberry poison.”
Tan Chuyan frowned: “Is it Xibo’s wolfberry poison?”
Feng Chilie: “Yes.”
Tan Chuyan’s expression suddenly darkened.
The assassination that night was intentional, and so was the use of wolfberry poison.
If he died in Jing Kingdom, Qi Kingdom would not say anything about the matter, but the relationship between Jing Kingdom and Xibo would definitely deteriorate further, so Xibo would no longer need an excuse if he wanted to start a war; he could just fight directly.
Intuition told Tan Chuyan that the person who sent an assassin to assassinate him was the same person who induced Tuoba Rou to commit suicide.
Because they all have the same purpose – to let Xibo send troops to attack Jing Kingdom and disrupt the situation in the world!
Who is it? Who is this person?!
Tan Chuyan was a little impatient, but he shouldn’t be like this. A real wolf must learn to hide its fangs and be patient. He closed his eyes and adjusted his breathing, planning to get out of bed and go to Ling-han Pavilion to ask Yan Changfeng to investigate the matter secretly.
Before his feet even touched the ground, he was held down by Feng Chilie: “Where are you going?”
“It’s a little urgent,” Tan Chuyan said with a red face and pale lips, “I’m going out for a trip.”
“What’s the urgent matter?” Feng Chilie pushed the person back and tapped his sleeping point: “The most urgent thing for you now is to rest. You are not allowed to go anywhere. Did you hear me? Just sleep well.”
Tan Chuyan’s eyelids became heavier and heavier, and he had no choice but to sleep. ‘It’s over, and no one can wake him up.’
When he fell asleep, Feng Chilie asked Uncle Fu to come over and take a look to make sure everything was okay before he felt at ease.
Then he sat at the table and wanted to think about what Tan Chuyan had just said.
Before, he had focused all his attention on talking about Tan Chuyan and had not thought about the relationship between this series of events. Now that he looked at it, there were indeed problems everywhere.
Why would they want to assassinate Tan Chuyan? Could it be that Xibo knew they had found a substitute and sought alternative plans? No, it was impossible for Xibo to receive the news so quickly.
One aspect of this matter remained unexplained. If Tuoba Rou committed suicide and was intentionally sent to Jing Kingdom by Xibo, then Xibo’s army should have moved together.
However, the border had remained quiet, and there was nothing unusual about Xibo. Unless—Xibo didn’t know that Tuoba Rou was dead. Someone else was secretly orchestrating this matter from beginning to end, aiming to use Tuoba Rou’s death to provoke a war!
However, because Tan Chuyan found a substitute, that person’s plan fell through and had to be rearranged. Tan Chuyan was the crucial figure in this new arrangement. If he died from Xibo’s wolfberry poison, regardless of Qi Kingdom’s stance, Jing Kingdom would be doomed.
In any case, the blame has already been placed on Xibo’s head. It didn’t matter if he got a little dirtier; it was better to seize the opportunity to start a war.
But who would want to do this? Feng Chilie rubbed his eyebrows, unable to think of anyone with a motive.
Regardless, the other party would not give up. Two crucial roles were at play in this game: Ai Xia, whose stand-in’s identity must not be exposed.
Another one was Tan Chuyan, if something happened to him, it wouldn’t just be a matter of war between Jing Kingdom and Xibo; Qi Kingdom might also intervene.
Feng Chilie opened the window and blew a long whistle. An eagle flew from a distance, and he patted the eagle’s back: “Nie, go and call me the twelve secret guards.”
Nie rubbed his face, flapped his wings, and flew away. Within half an hour, all twelve secret guards crowded into the room.
The twelve secret guards were stunned upon seeing the person lying on the bed. After all, their master had instructed them to outflank this person before. They refrained from asking any inappropriate questions and awaited Feng Chilie’s instructions.
Feng Chilie sat by the bed and touched Tan Chuyan’s forehead. The fever had subsided, and he was sleeping deeply. Feng Chilie withdrew his hand and tucked the quilt for him.
“From today on, you will be divided into two groups to protect two people,” Feng Chilie instructed. “An Yi, you take five people to protect Tan Chuyan. An Qi, you take five people to the Princess Mansion to protect Tuoba Rou.”
Feng Chilie added, “Hide well and don’t be discovered.”
“Yes!” The twelve secret guards agreed in unison and disappeared into the darkness.
