Chapter 21: 21 - Yotsuya Miko's Shock! Is it hard to kill ghosts? Isn't it enough to just have your hands?
"AAAAHHH!!!"
Amid the piercing scream, the twisted black mist Azuma Shoyo had glimpsed thinned out and, moments later, vanished completely.
Whoosh!
He cut off his heat vision.
Turning back, he saw Miko Yotsuya staring at him, jaw dropped.
"Still there?" he asked.
Miko's eyes welled up. With a sudden sob, she threw herself into his arms.
Azuma: "???"
Talk about unexpected.
He hadn't braced himself at all for Miko bursting into tears and hugging him.
Good thing…
No one else was around.
Otherwise, they might've thought he'd done something to her!
"Hey, don't cry!"
Azuma said, a bit helplessly, as Miko clung to him.
After a while…
Maybe having vented enough, Miko pulled back, stepping out of his embrace. She wiped her eyes, looking embarrassed. "Sorry! I got too emotional—hope I didn't bother you!"
"It's fine," Azuma said, waving it off. He didn't mind a cute girl throwing herself at him—just a heads-up next time would be nice.
"Can you still see anything now?" he asked.
Miko glanced around, then shook her head. "No, there's not a single evil spirit nearby anymore!"
"Good," Azuma said. "Next time you spot one around me, just give me a subtle heads-up. Or if one's bugging you, come find me—I can take care of them."
Since his heat vision could harm spirits, he had nothing to worry about.
How much damage it dealt, though?
Could it do serious harm to so-called "gods"?
That, he didn't know.
"Mm-hmm!"
Miko nodded eagerly.
"Azuma, thank you so much!" she said, her voice trembling with relief. "You don't know how bad it's been. We even moved to Tokyo because of this, but they still wouldn't leave me alone!"
"Now, though—you can kill them! This is amazing!!" Her curiosity bubbled up. "Um, Azuma, what was that light from your eyes? Some kind of exorcism spell?"
"More like a talent," he said. "Like your spirit sight. I can't see them, just vaguely sense they're around—but not exactly where."
Truthfully, he couldn't even sense them faintly—he'd needed Miko's help for this.
Which made him wonder…
Had that spirit been tailing him every day before?
Creepy thought!
Good thing it was dealt with now.
Any more spirits daring to mess with him? One blast of heat vision, and they'd learn their lesson!
"I'd rather not have this talent," Miko said, her face twisting bitterly.
It'd brought her endless trouble and danger.
Without a way to fight back—and only her resilience keeping her sane—she'd barely held on.
But now? The worst was behind her.
She could finally live normally!
Thank goodness she'd transferred to Teitan High. Without meeting Azuma, how much longer could she have lasted?
They chatted as they walked toward the school gate.
Miko told him the spirits had gotten craftier lately—disguising themselves as normal people to trick her.
Since being seen meant they'd attack, she'd been through hell these past few days.
She was just a 17-year-old girl—how she'd survived it all was a miracle!
At the gate…
Most students had already left during their delay.
They parted at an intersection—Azuma heading straight, Miko turning left.
"See you tomorrow, Azuma!" Miko waved with a smile.
"Tomorrow!"
Watching her head home happily, Azuma smiled too, then kept walking.
But before the next corner, he spotted Ran Mouri running toward him, looking frantic.
"Mouri!"
He called out, approaching her. "What's up?"
"Oh! Azuma, it's you," Ran said. "It's my dad—he rushed off to a case, and when I turned around, Conan was gone."
"A case? Conan's missing?"
Azuma got it—Conan had snuck off after Kogoro to the crime scene.
"Yeah, he was supposed to go home, but now I don't know where he went," Ran said, worried.
"Could he have followed your dad?" Azuma suggested.
"Huh?" Ran paused, then it clicked—Conan was obsessed with detective stuff. She smacked her forehead. "You're right! He must've tagged along without saying anything."
"Wanna go check?" Azuma asked.
Ran nodded. "Yeah, I'll head over. Dad didn't even take his phone—I can't reach him."
"I'll come with you. I've never seen a detective solve a case live," Azuma said.
Watching a case was an excuse—he really wanted to see if Conan's plot took any new turns.
In this anime multiverse, anything could happen.
"Great, thanks, Azuma!" Ran said with a nod.
"No need to be so formal. Sonoko just calls me by name—you don't have to keep saying 'Azuma-kun' either," he said, flagging down a passing taxi.
"Alright, I'll call you Azuma from now on," Ran agreed.
"That's more like it. Hop in," Azuma said with a grin, letting Ran slide in first before joining her.
"Ran, you know the address?" he asked.
"Yeah," she nodded, then gave the driver the address of a high-end apartment building.
