A tense silence hung in the air as Nuxsus faced down three of Gotham's most dangerous enforcers. His blood pulsed with excitement. Deathstroke, Killer Croc, and Brick—a finely-tuned assassin, a brute force predator, and an indomitable tank. Individually, he would have torn through them like paper, but together? This would be fun.
Slade Wilson, clad in his black-and-orange tactical suit, took a step forward, katana gleaming under the dim warehouse lights. "I don't know who you are," he said in a voice as sharp as his blade, "but attacking a League operation isn't something you walk away from."
Nuxsus smirked. "Oh? And what will the League of Assassins do? Send more hired muscle? I'd be terrified if I had a heart that could feel fear." He flexed his fingers, his nails elongating into razor-sharp, claw-like talons. His crimson eyes gleamed with amusement. "I'm here for that shipment. I think it might be valuable."
Brick cracked his knuckles, the sound like grinding stones. "And what if it ain't?"
"Then I'll just burn it." Nuxsus shrugged. "Chaos doesn't need a reason. It just is."
Croc growled, his massive, scaly form shifting like a coiled beast ready to pounce. "So ya just like pissin' people off?" His yellow eyes narrowed. "Bad choice."
Slade's blade was already moving.
A silver blur lashed toward Nuxsus's throat, but his Mind's Eye saw it coming. He leaned back, the blade missing by an inch, and then launched a counterstrike with his clawed hand. Slade pivoted, narrowly avoiding the attack before Brick came in swinging.
A massive stone-coated fist tore through the air.
Nuxsus caught it.
The impact sent a shockwave through the warehouse, the sheer force pushing back loose debris. But Nuxsus stood firm, fingers sinking into Brick's hardened skin.
"Not bad," Nuxsus mused. "You actually made me feel that one." He squeezed Brick's fist tighter, small cracks forming along the surface.
Then, Croc attacked.
A set of razor-sharp teeth came dangerously close to his throat. Nuxsus twisted, using Brick's arm as leverage to flip over Croc's charge, landing gracefully behind him. His claws slashed downward, tearing through Croc's back, but the reptilian brute barely flinched.
Slade capitalized on the moment, appearing behind Nuxsus in an instant.
The katana sliced downward.
Damn, he's fast.
Nuxsus turned at the last second, Slade's blade sinking into his shoulder instead of his neck. The pain was sharp but minor wounds meant nothing. His vampiric regeneration was already sealing it as he grinned at Slade.
"Your reflexes are good, old man." He reached up, fingers gripping the blade embedded in his flesh. "But that was sloppy."
He yanked the katana out and swung it back at Slade.
Slade ducked, dodging by a hair. Brick charged again, but Nuxsus flicked his foot up, kicking the katana toward him. The blade lodged itself in Brick's thick shoulder.
"AGH!" Brick snarled, ripping the sword out, but before he could retaliate, Croc was already moving.
The reptilian beast lunged at Nuxsus again, this time aiming lower. His powerful arms tried to grapple him, to pin him down and tear him apart.
Nuxsus barely managed to slip away, but his momentum faltered.
Slade and Brick seized the moment.
Slade spun, retrieving a second blade from his back, driving it toward Nuxsus's ribs.
Brick swung a devastating haymaker toward his side, aiming to shatter bones.
At the same time, Croc's massive tail whipped out, striking toward his legs to knock him off balance.
Nuxsus gritted his teeth. Clever bastards.
He twisted mid-air, avoiding the worst of Croc's tail, but Brick's punch connected. The sheer force sent him flying, crashing through a stack of wooden crates. Splinters rained down as Nuxsus flipped back to his feet, rolling his shoulders. His wounds were already knitting back together, but he was… impressed.
"I'll admit," Nuxsus chuckled, wiping the blood from his lips. "I expected brute force, but the three of you actually know how to fight together."
Slade didn't relax his stance. "You're strong, but strength alone won't save you from coordination."
Nuxsus smiled. "Then I guess I'll just have to start taking you seriously."
He vanished.
One second he was standing there. The next, he was behind Brick.
Before the stone-covered brute could react, Nuxsus's clawed hand drove into his lower back. Not deep enough to be fatal—but enough to hurt. Brick grunted, trying to shake him off, but Nuxsus slammed a knee into the small of his spine before launching himself toward Croc.
He dropped low, claws slashing upward across Croc's chest, leaving deep gashes.
Croc roared, but before he could retaliate, Slade was already moving.
The assassin leaped in, twin blades flashing.
Nuxsus blocked with his hardened forearm, the clash of metal and flesh creating a burst of sparks.
Slade didn't stop. His second blade came from the side, aiming for the jugular.
Nuxsus jerked his head back, feeling the wind from the blade graze his throat. His Mind's Eye flared, warning him of Croc charging again.
He used Slade as a springboard, flipping over him just in time for Croc's massive clawed hand to swipe through the air where he had been.
Landing on the ground, he wiped a drop of blood from his cheek. "Alright, I'll give you some credit. You're not completely pathetic."
Slade's eye narrowed. "You don't even know what you've gotten yourself into. You're making an enemy of the League."
Nuxsus tilted his head, his crimson eyes glinting with amusement. "I once made the entire world my enemy," he said, voice dripping with arrogance. "And I won."
He cracked his knuckles, the air humming with energy.
"So tell me, why should I be scared of a league of masked nobodies?"
Slade tightened his grip on his swords. Brick rolled his shoulders, and Croc bared his teeth.
"Well," Slade muttered. "I guess we'll just have to remind you why the League is feared."
Nuxsus threw his head back and laughed, his voice rich with amusement and cruelty. His crimson red eyes shimmered with unholy glee as he gripped the air with both hands.
"Nah… I think it's time we end this," he said, his smirk widening. "While I did enjoy your company, my precious shipment is waiting for me to take it. So… it's time I end it all."
A flicker of heat danced around his fingers, and then, with a sudden burst of hellfire, two massive blades materialized in his grip. The chains that linked them coiled and writhed like living serpents, glowing with the embers of the damned.
The Blades of Chaos.
