Living a Second Chance as the Richest Daughter

Chapter 3: A Stranger’s Life

After a series of exhausting laboratory tests, Anna—trapped in Shane's body—was wheeled back to the hospital room.

She stared at the ceiling, the cold, sterile smell of antiseptic filling her nose. Even though she was lying in Shane's bed, covered in Shane's blanket, she didn't feel like she belonged.

Because she didn't.

The IV in her arm, the hospital band around her wrist—everything belonged to someone else. Someone who had spent far too much time in this place.

Anna didn't know how to act. She felt like an imposter, pretending to be someone she wasn't. But what else could she do? If she told the truth, who would believe her?

The thought made her chest tighten.

She glanced at Mr. Jing—the only person she had seen since waking up in Shane's body.

Was he Shane's family?

She hadn't seen anyone else visit. No parents. No relatives. Just him.

Mr. Jing was carefully peeling fruit at the small table beside her bed. The rhythmic sound of the knife against the cutting board was oddly comforting.

"Are you hungry?" he asked, looking at her with quiet concern.

Anna hesitated. She wasn't used to people asking her that.

Before, she only ate when she had enough money for food—there were times she had to stretch a single meal for an entire day.

Still, she nodded.

Mr. Jing gave her a gentle smile. "I prepared your favorite—peaches."

Peaches?

Anna had never tried them before. She had only seen them in fruit stands, way too expensive for her to afford.

To her, they looked like pink apples.

She hesitated before picking up a slice. The moment she bit into it, a rush of sweetness spread across her tongue. It was soft, juicy, and completely unlike any fruit she had ever tasted.

Her mind was confused—it tasted strange, foreign—but her body responded naturally, as if it had eaten peaches a hundred times before.

Mr. Jing chuckled as he watched her. "Go ahead, eat more."

Anna nodded, slowly reaching for another slice.

She had no idea how long she would be in this body, in this life.

But right now, she was Shane Tiu.

And she had no choice but to play along.

Anna finished eating, savoring the unfamiliar sweetness of peaches, a luxury she had never experienced before. Even after the meal, her body felt unbearably weak, every movement sluggish and exhausting. By the time she had freshened up, more than an hour had passed, yet she still felt drained, as if the simplest tasks required immense effort.

When she stepped out of the bathroom, Mr. Jing was nowhere to be seen. A strange silence filled the room, urging her to explore the unfamiliar space she now inhabited.

The hospital room was nothing like the ones Anna had seen before. It was spacious, with a living area in front of the bed, a mini kitchenette, and a large flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. Appliances lined the counter—things she had only seen in department stores but never imagined owning. The room didn't feel like a place for the sick. It felt like a high-end studio apartment, a VIP suite designed for someone with wealth.

Her fingers trailed along the edge of the counter as she took in her surroundings.

Is this what it's like to be rich? Even in illness, they lived comfortably.

The thought unsettled her. In her old life, hospital visits were a nightmare—crowded wards, long waiting times, medical bills her family could barely afford. But here, in Shane's world, even being bedridden seemed… effortless.

Her gaze landed on a digital clock and calendar display near the bedside table.

Her stomach twisted.

Yesterday—no, what she thought was yesterday—was February 27. She had gone to the hospital for a check-up, met Shane, and then…

What happened after that?

Her pulse quickened as she read the date on the screen.

April 2.

Her breath caught.

No. That can't be right.

It was supposed to be February 28 when she woke up. She had slept through a single night, not an entire month.

Her legs wobbled, and she instinctively gripped the nearest surface to steady herself.

More than a month had passed.

Had she been unconscious all this time?

Before she could process the thought, the door opened. Mr. Jing entered, followed by a doctor and a nurse.

"Shane," Mr. Jing said gently, his voice warm but cautious.

Anna barely turned to face them, her thoughts still tangled. She couldn't tear her gaze away from the date.

"It's not February 28 today?" Her voice came out quieter than she expected.

Mr. Jing's expression softened with concern, but he shook his head.

"Today is April 2, Ms. Shane," the doctor confirmed. "You were in a coma for a month."

Anna felt her body freeze.

A coma?

Her breath hitched.

Her fingers curled into fists as she turned back to the screen, as if the numbers might change if she looked hard enough.

But they didn't.

Her mind raced. Yesterday—no, what she thought was yesterday—she was just Anna Lopez. A normal girl. A nobody.

Now, she was Shane Tiu.

How?

Why?

She forced herself to breathe, even as her chest tightened. The doctor was watching her closely, studying her reaction.

"You don't remember?" he asked.

Anna's mouth opened, then closed.

What was she supposed to say? That she wasn't really Shane? That she had no idea how she ended up in this body?

No. They'd think she was insane.

She swallowed hard and shook her head. "No… I just… I thought it was still February."

Mr. Jing let out a sigh of relief, though his eyes still held worry. "You scared us, Shane. The doctors said you might not wake up."

Anna felt a pang of guilt.

Shane was the one who almost didn't wake up. Not her.

But now, Shane was gone. And Anna was here.

Why?

"We'll need to run more tests," the doctor continued. "But for now, it's a good sign that you're awake. Your body will need time to recover, and physical therapy will help regain your strength."

Anna barely heard him. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears.

She looked down at her hands—Shane's hands.

They didn't feel like hers, but they moved when she willed them to.

Where was the real Shane?

And more importantly—where was Anna Lopez?
