Chapter 19: Teamwork Makes The Dream Work
Konohamaru leaned back in his chair, twirling a kunai absentmindedly as the classroom buzzed with post-training chatter. Udon was at his desk, sketching something that looked suspiciously like a battle plan on his notebook. Moegi sat cross-legged on the floor, fiddling with her hair, and Shibi was, as always, seated calmly with his kikaichū silently silently around him.
"So, I was thinking," Konohamaru announced suddenly, his tail flicking lazily behind him.
Udon looked up, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Thinking about what?"
Konohamaru grinned, sitting up straight. "This academy needs an upgrade. You know how we're always stuck sitting on the hard ground under trees during breaks? I'm gonna fix that."
Moegi tilted her head. "How?"
"Hammocks," Konohamaru said, his grin widening. "Every tree, every corner of this academy. It's gonna be awesome."
Udon frowned, his pencil pausing mid-scribble. "Hammocks? Won't that, like… break the rules or something? What if Sensei finds out?"
"Relax," Konohamaru replied, waving a hand dismissively. "It's not like I'm destroying anything. I'm improving the place. Besides, who doesn't love a good hammock?"
Moegi giggled. "I like the idea. But how are you gonna do it? There are a lot of trees, and some of them are pretty high."
Konohamaru pointed at his tail. "You're looking at the academy's best climber, thank you very much."
Shibi finally spoke, his tone as calm as ever. "Your plan lacks efficiency. Establishing hammocks in every tree will require significant time and resources."
"That's why I've got you guys," Konohamaru said, leaning forward. "Team effort, remember? Shibi, you can use your bugs to string up the hammocks. Udon, you're good at figuring out how to tie stuff securely. And Moegi… well, you can keep watch and make sure Sensei doesn't catch us."
Moegi shrugged. "I guess I'm in."
Udon sighed, clearly reluctant. "Fine. But if we get in trouble, this was all your idea."
"Deal!" Konohamaru said, slamming his hands on his desk.
Operation Hammock
The group gathered at the academy training grounds after school, armed with ropes, fabric, and a lot of determination.
"Alright, team," Konohamaru said, standing at the base of the first tree. "Let's get to work. Shibi, send your bugs up there and wrap this rope around that branch."
Shibi adjusted his sunglasses, extending a hand as his kikaichū swarmed into action. They buzzed upward, wrapping the rope neatly around the designated branch.
"Nice!" Konohamaru cheered. "See? This is gonna be easy."
Udon tied the other end of the rope to the tree trunk, his hands moving with practiced precision. "I still don't get why we're doing this," he muttered.
"Because it's awesome," Konohamaru said, climbing up the tree with the agility of a monkey. His tail coiled around the branch for balance as he spread the fabric out.
The first hammock was up in minutes, swaying gently in the breeze. Moegi clapped her hands. "It looks so cozy!"
"One down, a bunch more to go," Konohamaru said, jumping down and landing gracefully on his feet.
They moved from tree to tree, their teamwork surprisingly efficient. Shibi's kikaichū made quick work of wrapping ropes, Udon ensured the knots were secure, and Moegi kept an eye out for Kosubo-sensei.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, they approached the last tree—the one with the old swing where Naruto often sat.
Konohamaru paused, staring at the swing swaying gently in the breeze. Memories from his past life as Bob Kimura flickered in his mind. He remembered seeing Naruto sit here alone, a boy burdened by the weight of the village's scorn.
"Hey," Moegi said, nudging him. "You okay?"
"Yeah," Konohamaru said quickly, shaking off the thought. "Let's do this."
They worked in silence this time, the weight of the moment hanging over them. Konohamaru climbed up to secure the hammock while Shibi's bugs handled the ropes below.
When the hammock was finally in place, Konohamaru sat in it, testing its strength. It swayed gently, the perfect balance between the swing and the new addition.
"This one's the best," he said softly, more to himself than anyone else.
As the last rays of sunlight disappeared, the group stood back, admiring their work. The training grounds were now dotted with hammocks of all shapes and sizes, each one swaying gently in the breeze.
"We did it," Moegi said, her voice filled with pride.
"And no one caught us," Udon added, relieved.
Shibi adjusted his sunglasses. "The structural integrity is satisfactory."
Konohamaru grinned, his tail flicking with satisfaction. "Told you guys it'd be awesome. Tomorrow, we test them all during break."
As they packed up their supplies, the egghead kid from their class wandered over, his eyes wide. "Whoa," he said, staring at the hammocks. "Did you guys do all this?"
"Yep," Konohamaru said, puffing out his chest. "Pretty cool, huh?"
The kid nodded slowly. "Yeah… but Kosubo-sensei is gonna freak out."
Konohamaru smirked. "Let her. She's probably gonna love it. I mean, who wouldn't?"
The Next Morning
When the students arrived at the academy the next day, the hammocks were an instant hit. Kids clambered into them during breaks, laughing and swinging as if they'd always been there. Even Kosubo-sensei, though clearly suspicious, didn't say a word about the sudden additions.
As Konohamaru lounged in one of the hammocks during lunch, his tail draped lazily over the edge, he couldn't help but feel a swell of pride.
"Good job guys," he said to them, grinning as Shibi, Moegi, and Udon joined him under the swing tree.
