Kingdom: The Black Moon Assassin

Chapter 42: The Connection on the Battlefield

Although it seemed quite honorable to shout while fighting for one's nation, in fact, Jun never thought about that when he was on the battlefield.

He fought simply because he could, because he was someone who could touch the skies, leaving a mark on the history of humanity.

The original plan was to kill the general of the Wei army on this hill, thus winning the first battle that would determine whether they would continue fighting to reclaim the hill taken by the enemy.

For this, he needed the infantry's defensive line to hold until he had passed through the enemy ranks unnoticed.

Yes, he knew he would sacrifice everyone to win this battle; he brought Kyou Kai along so she wouldn't die on an abandoned battlefield due to a poor general.

But, surprisingly, the cavalry, which could have supported the infantry from the start, was now launching its attack.

The infantry had been doing a good job without them, but with their support, the casualties they could cause would be greater than Jun initially expected.

Even so, if the Qin army commander had decided to support the infantry with the cavalry earlier, perhaps there would have been fewer deaths, and they would now have more than eight hundred soldiers.

Jun had no alternatives before, but if he had foreseen this, perhaps things would have improved.

He knew that with the cavalry, more Wei soldiers would die, but among all those now attacking like madmen, only a few would escape with their lives.

Needless to say, when it came to minor injuries, like cuts, knife wounds, arrows, or burns, basically any wound could be fatal, given the low quality of medical care on the battlefield.

Even Kyou Kai, whom Jun had considered extremely brave and highly skilled in martial arts, would die if a wound became infected.

This time, Jun had received injuries on his arms that were bleeding; he was not immortal, especially not on such a disadvantageous battlefield.

"We must avoid making noise if we want to reach the general's position," Jun murmured as he climbed a tree to see the field beyond the trees.

They had encountered some guards on their way to the rear of the mountain, who were killed. They sneaked in and discovered that the rear defense was extremely weak.

There weren't many soldiers in this area, which would benefit their attack.

"What did you see?" Kyou Kai asked Jun, who had come down from the tree.

"The forest isn't that big. We can get through here as long as we don't draw too much attention," Jun said as he thought about the best way to do this.

He hadn't brought his special gear for this battle; even the thought of participating hadn't crossed his mind until he found himself dragged onto the battlefield by a stampede of soldiers who were now dead.

If Jun had had his gear with him, this plan would be better now.

"We could wait until it gets dark, then slip through the enemy lines and take the general's head without much effort."

Kyou Kai frowned, unsure if this plan would really be feasible for her to participate in; after all, this was not the place where she should die.

"What's wrong?" Jun asked, noticing Kyou Kai's silence. She seemed uneasy with this plan, so he waited to hear her thoughts.

"I must not die here."

"This isn't a suicide mission; we have chances." Jun, confident in his abilities, thought this would not be a big deal, just a simple assassination.

By now, Jun naturally understood Kyou Kai's purpose.

Unfortunately, even if he knew it now, there was nothing he could do with just that knowledge. To this girl, he was a stranger meddling in her mission.

"We are two against hundreds of guards; even thinking that we can come out unscathed from that attack is foolish."

"Yes, but I won't die in this place." Jun was confident in his words.

They might encounter far more resistance than expected if they were caught, but if they didn't kill the general on this hill, all their allies on the ground would lose, and the battle would be over. They would only retake these hills if they eliminated the generals; these strategic points are crucial if they are to reclaim the city Wei had taken.

Jun smiled to himself. Everything seemed to be going well recently, so he felt a bit relaxed. He didn't notice anything wrong with Kyou Kai; she was never expressive.

Jun just wanted to use the geographical advantage of their position to strangle the neck of the Wei army and return home. If he did not demonstrate his skills, he might tarnish his clan's name and damage his reputation.

"I hadn't thought of that."

Kyou Kai looked at Jun and asked, "What are you talking about?"

"Nothing; I spoke instead of thinking."

"So, will we attack?"

Jun thought seriously and said, "You can stay behind me. If I think we are facing something we can't survive, I won't force you to move forward."

A suicide mission was not what he sought either; he hoped to live a long life, avoiding a dirty battlefield where the dead are forgotten unless they are great generals.

"Then I'll follow you closely." Kyou Kai had never met anyone more sincere than Jun. She knew that he always spoke the truth, which was really quite curious.
