Chapter 15: Love and Forgiveness, the Peace of Time
The radiant glow of time bathed the ruins of the Tower of Temporal Illusions, whispering tales of the events that had just transpired. Though the scene seemed calm, emotions surged within each of their hearts.
Aeliana silently gazed at the Key of Time in her hand. Its faint glow pulsed like a gentle heartbeat, resonating with her resolve. Recalling the confrontation with Egress, she softly asked Arthur, "Was there truly no way to save him? He was also someone fate had deeply scarred."
Arthur sighed, a trace of complexity in his gaze. "Time never entirely robs someone of the chance to change. Egress's remorse was genuine, and his future may hold more significance than we imagine."
Meanwhile, Egress, swept into another plane of existence by the forces of time, knelt in an expanse of empty white plains surrounded by an endless void. His body felt weightless, as if disintegrating into dust, but a voice echoed softly in his ears.
"Egress," the voice called. It was firm yet gentle, carrying an undeniable power.
"Who's there?" Egress demanded, his gaze darting in fear and confusion. His pride had long been shattered, leaving only the trepidation of facing the unknown.
"I am the will of time," the voice answered. "You twisted your soul in the pursuit of power, yet your regret has made the flow of time reconsider your existence."
A golden halo descended, encircling Egress. Tears streamed freely down his face as he murmured, "I want to go back, to stop it all… I've caused so much harm."
"The past cannot be changed, but the future remains unwritten," the voice intoned. "You will be granted one chance—not to rewrite history, but to repair the damage you've done."
Egress raised his head, and a flicker of clarity returned to his tear-streaked eyes. "I'll atone for my sins, no matter the cost."
As Aeliana and her companions left the ruined tower, they encountered an unexpected figure. A young man with silver hair and an unusual gray robe stood before them, wielding a staff that shimmered faintly. His expression carried a playful smile, but his deep eyes betrayed an air of profound wisdom.
"At last, I've found you, guardians of the Key of Time," the man said, his voice clear like a flowing stream yet imbued with quiet authority.
Kail instinctively drew his sword. "Who are you?"
The man showed no sign of concern and simply shook his head. "Relax, I'm not your enemy. My name is Noah. I'm another envoy of time, sent to help you complete your final mission."
"An envoy of time?" Lina asked skeptically. "Why have we never heard of you before?"
Noah shrugged, his tone lighthearted. "Maybe because I'm the secret weapon?"
Arthur's gaze fixed on Noah's staff, and realization dawned on his face. "Your staff… it's a manifestation of the Flow of Time!"
Noah nodded. "Indeed. The Key of Time you wield represents the heart of time's will, while my staff is its eye. Together, we must act, for the remnants of the Shadow Council are not gone. They're preparing an even greater threat."
During a brief rest, Aeliana wandered to a lakeside, holding the Key of Time and watching its glow. The confrontation with Egress replayed in her mind, evoking a deep sense of sorrow rather than triumph.
Noah approached quietly and smiled. "Still feeling sorry for him?"
Aeliana nodded. "He wasn't born a villain. He lost too much."
Noah's expression softened. "That's the lesson time teaches us. No matter how much loss, hatred, or despair we endure, only love and forgiveness can truly free us. You've already grasped this, and that's why the Key responds to you."
Aeliana smiled faintly, a hint of relief in her eyes. "I hope he can understand that too."
Under Noah's guidance, the group learned that the remnants of the Shadow Council had established another time device in the frozen northern wastelands, intending to disrupt the laws of time once more. Their ultimate mission was now clear: destroy this device and safeguard the balance of time.
Before setting out, Arthur stood at the forefront of the group, his gaze firm. "Our journey is nearing its end, but it's also the start of something new. No matter what challenges lie ahead, we must remember that true strength comes from our unity, trust, and love for life itself."
Kail: "Noah, if the Key of Time is so powerful, why don't we just use it to save everyone?"
Noah (shaking his head): "Because the Key of Time isn't meant to rewrite history. Its purpose is to preserve balance, not create change."
Aeliana: "But Egress tried to reshape the timeline. Didn't he know these rules?"
Noah: "Of course, he knew. Both he and Orpheus attempted it. They used fragments of time to return to their pasts and rewrite their destinies. But they failed."
Kail (astonished): "Failed? Why?"
Noah: "Because time has a self-correcting mechanism. Any attempt to alter history is either rendered ineffective or results in greater disaster. Egress and Orpheus both came to understand this, but their obsession blinded them to the truth."
Aeliana: "They knew it was impossible and still tried? Why…"
Noah (sighing): "Because love and loss drive people to madness. They didn't believe in rules—only in the power of their pain to defy them."
Taking a deep breath, Aeliana tightened her grip on the Key of Time, her resolve fortified as she faced the journey ahead.
Noah gently waved his staff, opening a portal to the frozen north. Turning to Aeliana, he offered a meaningful glance. "The answers lie in the future. The truth waits for you there."
After passing through the time crack opened by Noah's scepter, Arya and her companions came to the Arctic Icefield. The sky and earth here are pale, and the cold wind is like a knife, as if even time is frozen. However, in this desolate land, the conspiracy of the Shadow Council is quietly brewing.
In the center of the icefield stands a huge and strange device. It looks like an upside-down clock, and its core emits an ominous light, as if it distorts the entire space. Noah explained: "This is the 'time reversal device' made by the Shadow Council. Once activated, it will release enough power to destroy all timelines."
"We must stop it!" Kyle drew his sword, his eyes like a torch.
"It's not that simple." Noah pointed to the light curtain around the device, "That is a time barrier, which cannot be destroyed by ordinary power. Only the combination of the Key of Time and the Time Stream can disintegrate its core defense."
Arya clenched the key in her hand and nodded: "Let's get started."
As soon as they stepped into the range of the device, the tranquility of the ice field was broken. The remnants of the Shadow Council appeared all around, led by an unexpected figure - Arya's mentor, Orpheus. His once kind face now looks sinister, with crazy obsession in his eyes.
"Orpheus! Why you?" Arya looked at him in disbelief.
Orpheus sneered: "Time is the embodiment of power, and power belongs to the strong! Arya, I teach you in the hope that you can understand this. But you are obsessed with those meaningless morals!"
"Teacher, this is not power, this is destruction!" Arya retorted angrily, "Your choice will cost countless lives!"
Orpheus shook his head slightly: "Fate has never been fair, this time, I want to reshape everything!"
Before he finished speaking, he waved his hand to summon a group of frost beasts, roaring and rushing towards everyone.
A fierce battle unfolded on the ice field, and Arya, Kyle, Lina and Noah worked together to resist Orpheus's offensive. However, there were many frost beasts, and each one was difficult to deal with.
At the most critical moment, an unexpected figure fell from the sky-Igres. There was no more hatred in his eyes, but deep repentance. Holding a long sword, he joined the battle without hesitation and blocked the attacks of several beasts.
"Igres!" Kyle was stunned, "Why did you come back?"
Igres answered while fighting: "Time gave me a chance to redeem myself. I can't make any more mistakes! This must end!"
His joining made the situation change subtly, and everyone finally gradually gained the upper hand.
After a fierce battle, Arya finally broke through the siege and came to the core of the time device. She inserted the key of time into the core of the device, ready to end it all.
Orpheus rushed over frantically, trying to stop Arya. Noah stood in front of him and said calmly: "Orpheus, stop. Your obsession will not bring salvation, but only destruction."
During the battle, Orpheus not only commanded, but also participated in the battle personally. His magic was precise and powerful, and the frost beast was violent like thunder under his control. He seemed to firmly believe that his choice was right, but the uneasiness and contradictions in his heart gradually revealed.
When he saw Igres and Arya join forces to fight the beast, complex emotions surged in his heart. He was Arya's mentor and had worked with Igres in the Time Guard for many years. Now, these two people are standing on the opposite side of him. This "betrayal" deeply hurts him, but it also makes him begin to question his choice.
Forced to face his past
Seeing Orpheus pressing forward step by step, Noah calmly threw a crystal into the air. The crystal burst and released a projection light curtain - that was Orpheus's past, a scene he tried to forget.
In the light curtain, young Orpheus held a young child in his arms and gently coaxed her to sleep. His wife walked forward and smiled gently: "The power of time is not to let us reshape the past, but to remind us to cherish the present."
Orpheus's expression suddenly froze. When he saw this scene, he almost dropped the staff in his hand. His wife and daughter are the loves of his life, and they are also the reason why he fell into darkness.
The camera turned, and the light curtain became broken and chaotic. Orpheus in the picture stood in the ruins, having lost his wife and daughter. He knelt down in despair, with the flame of revenge in his eyes: "If time can save everything, I am willing to pay any price!"
Noah said coldly: "Orpheus, this is why you have come to this day. You can't let go of the past, but have you ever thought about what your wife and daughter would think if they saw you today?"
The influence of Arya's words and actions
Orpheus was stunned, looking at Noah and Arya with complicated eyes. At this time, Arya stepped forward, with no hostility in her eyes, only deep sympathy and understanding.
"Teacher, I know your pain." Arya whispered, "Your obsession comes from love, but have you ever thought about how many people who cherish their loved ones like you will be destroyed by your choice? Their pain will make your previous love meaningless." She paused and looked directly at Orpheus: "I used to think you were an omnipotent mentor, but now I understand that you are also a person who suffers pain like us. Teacher, pain can make people lost, but also awaken people. The ending of all this does not necessarily have to end in destruction." Battle episode As Arya was speaking, the remnants of the Shadow Council tried to sneak attack her. Orpheus instinctively stretched out his hand, and a magic barrier blocked the attack. He himself was stunned for a moment. His actions at this moment were not out of reason, but some kind of protective desire buried deep in his heart. Igres seized the opportunity to defeat the enemy, and looked at Orpheus with mixed emotions: "Orpheus, I was once obsessed with the past like you, but the past cannot be reversed. Now you may still have a chance to change the future."
Inner struggle and final awakening
Orpheus' heart began to shake violently. He recalled everything he had done after the death of his wife and daughter, and the innocent lives sacrificed because of his plan. His magic allowed him to see countless worlds swallowed by the cracks in time, and the wailing of those lives seemed to echo in his ears.
"Catherine... Ellie..." He murmured the names of his wife and daughter, and tears blurred his vision. He remembered his wife's words before she died: "The power of time is not to change the past, but to protect the future."
His obsession finally collapsed at this moment, and he realized that his actions had violated his wife's last wishes and his original intention as a mentor. He looked at Arya with deep regret in his eyes: "Arya... am I really wrong?"
Arya nodded, her tone firm: "Teacher, what has been missed cannot be recovered, but you can choose to make up for the mistakes in the past. We all have a chance."
Orpheus was stunned, his eyes wandering between Noah and Arya, his face showing a struggling look: "Am I really wrong? All this..."
"Teacher," Arya said softly, "time cannot be turned back, but love and forgiveness can let us start again. Please let it go."
Orpheus knelt down dejectedly, tears welling up in his eyes: "Arya... I... was wrong..."
As the power of the key of time poured into the core, the time device began to collapse. A dazzling light appeared above the ice field, covering the whole world.
Noah smiled and looked at Arya: "The timeline has been restored, and your mission is completed."
"What about you?" Arya asked.
Noah shook his head: "My mission is also completed, it's time to return to the depths of time."
He turned into a ray of light and disappeared in front of everyone.
A few days later, Arya and her companions stood on a green plain, feeling the tranquility of the flow of time. Igres chose to live in seclusion, focusing on repairing his past mistakes; Orpheus returned to his hometown and started a new life.
"We did it." Kael exclaimed, "It's all over at last."
Arya smiled and nodded: "Yes, but the story of time is far from over. We have learned the most important things - love, forgiveness, and awe of life."
The setting sun shines on them, as if it has drawn a perfect end to all this.
