Chapter 16: Mark: Invincible 1
Mark Grayson, otherwise known as Invincible, found himself sitting in the waiting room of the hospital, head slumped, berating himself for his blunder earlier.
"What the heck was that? You froze out there? How can you be a hero if you just freeze in the middle of a crisis"
He spoke to himself, not caring about the looks he was getting from both the hospital staff and the patients.
He was waiting because he wanted to hear the condition of the lady he saved, and luckily, just as he lifted his head, he saw the nurse approach him; he quickly got up and met her halfway.
"How is she? Is she going to live?"
He frantically asked, grabbing the nurse by the shoulders. There was desperation and guilt in his eyes. He was afraid of the possibility that he failed, and every nanosecond it took the nurse to answer made his insides churn.
"Her situation is stable, but it will be a while before she can wake up, but for now she's fine"
The young hero heaved a giant sigh of relief as he felt it wash over him as he heard those words. His muscles loosened, and his body dropped to his knees as he thanked whatever God existed. His heart was at ease, and his mind began to slow down.
'At least I did not get someone killed'
He thought he didn't know how his conscience would deal with something like that, and he didn't want to know. However, he needed to train more and prepare himself more; it was easy to realise that this was a fluke and that next time someone might die.
"I'm glad you're relieved, but we did a background search and found that she has no immediate family to pay for the hospital bills, and she doesn't have insurance"
"W-what?"
Mark looked at her with a look of befuddlement, but he was quick to realise that, indeed, people do pay for hospital bills. However, he had assumed incidents like alien invasions exempted them from that.
"We'll still keep her alive until she wakes up, but I think it would be better to have someone signed that will cover the medical expenses before she wakes up; you wouldn't happen to know if she has any older family members?"
"No, but since her injuries were because of an alien invasion, can't the government cover it?"
The nurse shook her head, and Mark found himself in disbelief.
"What about the GDA? Can't they cover it?"
"They want to move her to their own private facility for that, but we can't move her just yet, and they aren't willing to pay for the expenses while keeping her here"
She explained, and Mark suddenly felt angry but quickly calmed down; he wanted to shout about how unfair it was, but he could only sigh; the nurse wasn't at fault. She just worked here and unfortunately, that was how things worked.
Perhaps it was because such things weren't reported in the news and thus weren't known because he had never heard of people who were injured by a villain attack paying for hospital bills.
"I'll try and locate her family. What's her name?"
He asked, there was no point in trying to argue back and forth on why she shouldn't have to pay so instead he decided he might as well try his best to help, even though he had no idea how, if her family can't pay then may he can, although he doesn't know if his dad will agree to that.
…..
[The next day]
Mark had to skip school today and spent some time searching for the woman's family on the internet. It was quite difficult to find, considering she couldn't find anyone related to her on any social media platforms or even any search Engine; despite being elderly, the woman seems to have no one in her life who was anything close to a relative.
Of course, he only did half a day's research so he didn't do everything he could, this was mostly because his mind and body were occupied by far more serious things, which as his dad lying in the hospital before him as his mother did her best to take care of him disregarding any doctor's opinions.
"I didn't know you were the expert on Viltrumites"
Mark expressed, as he watched the man he thought was the strongest in the world lie there as if dead, his heart was currently at ease as he was assured that his father would live, the rib cage and sternum had hairline fractures, his lungs were damaged slightly and he had a concussion, the reason he wasn't awake yet was mostly due to fatigue.
"I'm not. His body rejects most pills and medicine, and the only way for him to heal quicker is with hot water and some fruit oil."
"How'd you figure that out?"
He asked curiously, as he placed the phone on the chair beside him and focused more on his father's slumbering body. It was weird watching him just lie there, and the thought of him dying never escaped his mind.
Omni-man had some tough creatures and villains in the past, but Mark has never witnessed him being down for more than a couple of hours, and even when he was, he always had a "walk it off" attitude about it.
"Through trial and error, there's very little that can hurt him, so when something did, it took a lot of effort from me to figure out how to patch him up quickly. Don't worry Mark, he'll bounce back stronger than ever, he always does"
She reassured her son, whose face was strained at his dad's visage. This was the first time Mark had seen his dad hurt this badly, so she understood the uneasiness he was probably feeling.
"I know Mom, Dad's the strongest man in the world, that Cecil guy said that himself"
Deborah chuckled. In terms of strength, Nolan was a cut above the rest when it came to that, even besting the likes of War Woman as well as Immortal and Aquarius.
"You know, during the monthly barbecues we used to have when you were little, War Woman always made sure to challenge him for that, she was always so competitive when it came to strength and power"
Deborah said; there was a bittersweet smile on her face as she recalled the time she and Noland, the guardians when they had some time off. Nolan always insisted they were just colleagues, but she knew him; he just didn't want to admit his feelings out loud.
"Did she ever beat him?"
"No, but she never stopped trying both her and Aquarius"
She couldn't believe they were dead. It felt unreal, whatever thing killed them was something dangerous and something that needed to be dealt with as quickly as possible but they didn't know what it was or who it was.
"Do you think I'll be as strong as him someday?"
He asked, finally taking his eyes away from his father and looking at his own hand; ever since his father told him about developing powers, he had always had the dream of fighting alongside him, but considering his blunder yesterday, he doubted he could reach that level of strength.
"Of course, you will"
She answered, and the room descended into silence; she saw the look of doubt on his face; he didn't believe in himself just yet, and unfortunately, she could say nothing to him about that; only Nolan would be able to motivate him on that part.
"Why don't you go outside? Get some fresh air?"
"ah–"
"Mark, you can't stay here forever, plus you need the fresh air; it will help you think. Don't worry, your dad won't die."
The young hero wanted to protest but reluctantly stood up and left, telling her he'd be back in an hour.

A/N:
it is never elaborated in the show how Debbie used to "patch Nolan" up, but in the comics, it's stated as long as Viltrumites eat, they can be able to heal quicker, so I figured fruit oils and hot water would make sense as Debbie's method of quickening his healing. Fruit oil because I assume the smart atoms in Viltrumites can absorb nutrients and vitamins to facilitate healing and Hot water, just because.
