Chapter 547: Good News
Before he could Ascend the Navigation or Vision Talents, William decided to solve the problem at hand. His top priority should be to restore his full combat strength, which required another upgrade to the Mind Talent.
Three Ascended Points and four hours later, the Ascended Mind Talent reached E-Rank, allowing the Primordial Soul Devourer Technique to expand completely. In its completely uncompressed state, the Technique took up roughly seventy percent of William's mind.
To put it in perspective, the X-Rank Jack Of All Trades Talent— a Celestial Talent— occupied less than four percent of William's Sea of Consciousness. This was a Talent that consisted of powerful sub-Talents such as Arrays, Blacksmithing, Alchemy, and many more.
Yet, a mere Soul Cultivation Technique was more than thirty times that!
-You dare to say "mere"? The "mere" Technique almost killed you for trying to remember it! This "mere" Technique surpasses my own age. I wonder if your small brain understands what I'm trying to say here.
William couldn't say he understood, considering his Cultivation level, but he had a general idea of what the System was getting at.
While age surely didn't equal strength, the Primordial Soul Devourer Technique was a force to be reckoned with, even by the System's standards. It was truly an amazing treasure!
He decided to ask the most important question. System, is it better than you?
-Not a chance. Not even I was an eon younger.
William nodded in satisfaction, sensing the waves of pride that the System was continuously generating. For some reason, he too was proud of the System.
He spent 3 Ascended Points upgrading the Ascended Mind Talent to E-Rank, then another 15 on raising it to D-Rank, further improving his Sea of Consciousness. The bonus strength to his mental attacks capped out at 24 times, but William was satisfied.
To upgrade the Mind Talent to C-Rank would require 75 Ascended Points, of which William only had 60 left, though there was no need to improve it further even if he had enough Points. The Primordial Soul Devourer Technique now occupied less than twenty percent of his Sea of Consciousness, which meant he'd be back to full combat strength once his mind healed.
There was still more to be done, so William didn't join the students in clearing the Quake Dungeon just yet. First, he laid out one of each of the items that he purchased from the Treymon Auction House a few days prior.
System, can you Ascend my Resistance Talents?
In response, William's Status Panel appeared in front of him, listing out the Resistances one by one and their required item.
-Select the Talents you wish to Ascend.
Done. Can you Ascend these?
-Please wait.
...
...
-Ascended the following Talents: Cold Resistance, Poison Resistance, Slow Resistance, Paralysis Resistance, Root Resistance, Blind Resistance, Hearing Protection, Restriction Resistance, Illusory, Awareness.
William opened each of the Resistance Talents and read their information, finding each of them to be very similar to the other Resistances. Only six Resistances remained until they were all Ascended, which filled him with excitement.
Shit! I forgot to buy the Tier 10 Stimulant Pill from the Alchemists! William smacked himself in the forehead, cursing himself for leaving Treymon so quickly.
Oh well, maybe someone in Great Rouge is selling one. Or I can just get it next time I go to Treymon...
William didn't let the mistake get to him and instead looked at his other Talents.
First, he Ascended both the Vision and Navigation Talents. The Vision Talent now allowed William to see a full 360 degrees without the usual blind spot directly behind him. Like the other Ascended Talents it also developed partial resistance to Dimensional Restrictions, allowing William to use some of its capabilities while at school.
This was a much bigger deal now than it would have been before, since William needed the Vision Talent to see his Mana Circuits in real time.
The Navigation Talent improved in several ways, not only allowing him to survey the area at a greater horizontal and vertical range, but also improving the clarity of the Navigation Radar. It was as if he had a birds-eye view at all times of an area, which he could combine with his Vision Talent to get an accurate picture of anything within range.
William spent another twelve Ascended Points upgrading both his Vision and Navigation Talents directly to Ascended D-Rank, purely for the purpose of increasing their resistance to Dimensional Restrictions. He had enough Points to raise one of the Talents to C-Rank, but William decided to improve his Earth Affinity instead, finding it to be more useful in the current moment. When he improved his Earth Affinity, William received the expected bonuses, but there was just one line that was different from what he expected. Instead of requiring one hundred Ascended Points to upgrade again, there was a secondary requirement.
Next rank up: 100 Ascended Points + 3x Deity Earth Shard
What do you mean, three Deity Earth Shards?!? It's only C-Rank!
-As your Talents become stronger, so too do the requirements to upgrade. I've said this before, Points aren't always enough.
Sigh... I know, but did it really have to be as early as the B-Rank upgrade? Why couldn't it have been S-Rank or something?
William knew he had no real reason to be upset. After all, wasn't the System giving out Ascended Points like candy earlier? Not to mention the pleasant experience riding with Bristle and his Red Rogue Serpent.
Aside from nearly dying on several occasions in the last few weeks, William's Ascended Realms experience was going fairly smoothly. He had avoided the Heavens twice, cleared several System Quests, earned loads of rewards from his school and the Quake Dungeon, and even gained a mysterious Technique from sometime around the Primordial era, judging from context clues.
Who could complain about that?
-It's been easy so far, huh? Sounds like you're itching for a calamity to happen.
-Good news, rumors of an abnormally talented student have reached the Riverveil Family and they're sending a team to assassinate you.
